Title: STRAWBERRY GAME 27TH 28TH moved to-4PEAKS
Post by: yammie r6s on January 21, 2007, 10:20:10 AM
the new location of the game will be at FOUR PEAKS, it's not quite the setting we were planning for but we can make the adjustment to the game scenarios. last time i was out there was a blast so i am still looking forward to this.
the game dates and times are still the same as well as all of the rules too.
also wear whatever camo you want, we will still designate teams with arm bands

date-27th and 28th (sat-sun)
MEET AT CONOCO GAS STATION AT 8:00 AM we will head out to AO at 8:30 am

we will be starting the game briefing at 10 am on saturday so if you plan on playing through all of the games and staying the night then bring all of the gear necessary for a campout.
i would suggest bieng at the AO by 9am in order to get all of your equip and gear set up.

once again sorry for the AO change but it was too difficult to get to the strawberry loc. we have a lot of rsvp's and have put a lot of effort in the making of this set up, myself and whiskey will pm everyone that rsvp'd  to make sure they get the info.
see you all out there on saturday morn
james

here is a quick rundown of what we had in mind for the game setup and scen.

schedule:

10:00am-10:30am -game breifing

10:30am-2:30pm   - battlefield ctf/core sample collection missions

30min                    - break

3:00pm-7:00pm    - battlefield ctf/plant the bombs scenarios

60 min                  - chowtime break

8:00pm-12:00pm  - battlefield ctf!! night game

12:00pm-7:00am  - sleep time

7:00am-11:00am  - battlefield ctf/pilot mission

then an optional end game to capture all flag bases
most of these missions have been through a lot of planning by me and whiskey. we will type up each individual mission to give as an actual mission hand out to team leaders. chris and i have voluteered to be the game coordinators, while playing.

Here is a map of the area and what we've determined as the bases.  The flags with both red and blue on them are the flag bases, the ones that look like buildings with either a red or blue flag on them are the team bases.  I will have about 25 of these at the game to hand out to people.  I would suggest that you guys print them out and bring a copy  just incase we dont have enough for those who want them!

Any idea what the overnight temperature of that area is?

Post by: Vince on January 21, 2007, 06:03:58 PM
Well, two years back now, on PHX COBRA's birthday, 9 December, it was incredibly cold, probably mid thirties, to the high twenties. That was an unseasonably cold night for that year it turns out, but, it can get real cold at Four Peaks.

Post by: Whiskey11 on January 21, 2007, 06:12:36 PM
the best thing to do would be determine the temp in the valley a couple of nights before the game and plan for about 5 degrees cooler.  I would plan for low 40's even though I doubt it will be that low.

Post by: yammie r6s on January 21, 2007, 06:14:22 PM
definately not as cold as strawberry though

what hurt can it do to just break some extra more clothes?  Be prepared (yea i know boy scouts) but it's not like you are backpacking and you have to carry the extra weight for 10 miles.  You may never use it, but bring extra warm clothes just in case.

2 Questions

First one is will a small truck handle the dirt road.
Second is Would you mind if I left early(5-6pm).

Post by: Whiskey11 on January 21, 2007, 06:30:44 PM
Your truck should be able to make it.  I've been told cars can make it :P  We arnt going to say "No you cant leave" leave when you need to ;)  The only problem is you'll be missing all the fun at night!

Bringing extra clothes is a good idea, no doubt. The reason I asked is I was wondering if it was going to be too cold to camp overnight. Not to be a pussy or anything, but there comes a point where it's too cold for it to be worth it.

I have plans the next day.

I just don't want to get up there and not travel due to weather or road conditions.

My experience with temps is this.  Bring a sleeping bag that is rated a little bit warmer than the expect conditions (if it is supposed to be 40 degrees, bring
at least a 30 degree bag).  I'm gonna assume that everyone is bringing a tent since this is car camping.  A tent will usually add about 10 degrees of warmth, because of wind chill and they hold in heat to some extent.  Also, a decent sleeping pad is VERY helpful.  A a super thin foam pad (the rolling type) doesn't provide that much warmth.  A therma-rest foam/air pad, even the thin one provide a world of extra warmth.

I will be sleeping in a 20 degree down sleeping bag on a thin therma-rest air pad in a 3 season tent.  However, im not recommending to go out and buy all this stuff because that's about $500 in camping gear, I'm just giving an example of what i've found works.  That set up has suited me well for years in many different tempature ranges.  Also, I'd doesn't hurt to bring a space blanket as an emergency item.  They add a lot of extra warmth if you need it are very light and pack small, i wouldn't rely on that though because they're a pain in the ass to get back in the little plastic bag they come in.  And if push comes to shove, hit up the car heaters

Heavy snow? Nearly one inch?

i'm sure the ao will be fine, i just saw that the forecast for the end of the week will be in the mid 60's and the low in the 40's so unless i'm walkin around knee deep in snow like i was yeterday in strawberry... we will be setting up the game fri day night ready to kick arse on sat!....
f'n snow.. :x
Title:
Post by: Muffin on January 22, 2007, 01:23:37 AM
Yeah. This weeks forcast shows mid 60's to mid 40's buy the end of the week. We were talking about it, and worse case scenario would be mud. Hell I would actually like light snow on the ground.
Title:
Post by: Whiskey11 on January 22, 2007, 07:46:26 AM
Personally I think mud is fun.  I've played games in 4 inches of mud with 3 inches of water on top of it.  I can count at least 3 times that I jumped into a trench that was boot high of water and mud.  In addition to the already falling rain.  Heres a pic of the staging area :D

were your tents in that...that looks misarible.

Post by: Whiskey11 on January 22, 2007, 09:26:45 AM
Yes, most of my organizations tents were flooded after the first hour being set up.  We literally had to dig trenches around our tents in the staging area to route water away from our tents.  (the ground is fairly level and the high spots wernt high enough).  Some people came prepared and brought tarps and that only fixed the issue for a few more hours.  Others brought cots to sleep on in their tents.

Moral is: Rain is fun! :)  Makes Smoke Grenades look friggen awesome!
Title: im in

im in. i just moved here and played with aa last week and had a blast. i can only play on saturday cause i work sunday. i need directions to the conoco and the field. thanks.
Title:
Post by: nosmo on January 23, 2007, 04:28:55 PM
Basically, you get on I-87 and go towards payson.  When the B Line becomes I-87 (after you cross shea) You make a right at the next light.  The Conoco is right there.  As for directions to the field, you take I-87 further, for about 15-20 minutes I'd say and get off at the exit with sign that says FOUR PEAKS.  Make a right onto this dirt road.  I can't describe the specifics from that point on unless I am there, but odds are you will be following a bunch of other cars so that shouldn't be an issue anyways.

coming from avondale,
take the i 10 east to the 202 east
once on the 202 east look for countryclub/87 exit
turn north(left) onto 87 and then follow what nosmo posted
thats how you get to 87 though..

You can just follow Shea all the way east and it ends on the 87 and make a left.

Hey if you guys wanted me to, I could make a topographic map of the area if that's helpful, it shows the elevation changes a lot better than the satellite view does.

I've already had about 20 copies made of the other map.  It'll be easy to use it and I think you can get a general idea of where your at on the map,  If you'd like you can print em off and hand em out if people want em.

Looking foward to seeing all you guys there! This is going to be an awesome turnout for our first game and its exciting!  We've got some good stuff in store :)

Yeah it was great fun. Everyone left after night fall, we played one last game while the sun was setting, pretty lame because a lot of friendly fire went on. We drove up in a 98 neon that has NO suspention and beat up that road... Okay it was horrible driving those dirt roads.

And a thank you to Charlie for leading a thoroughly enjoyable squad...

I'd like to personally thank everyone who came out to play we had an exceptional turnout for our first game!  I know I had fun and I hope everyone else did too.  Its unfortunate we lost alot of people after the second game I was looking foward to doing some of the other missions on top of the Flag bases however that is something for future games!

Speaking of Future games the game at strawberry will probably be in the spring sometime when the snow has melted from the ground and its actually decent to be at :)

I'm working right now on getting the pictures up that I got from my camera and they will be posted here for everyones enjoyment.  If you guys have any other comments or suggestions for our next game please feel free to PM me, Anything sent to me will be kept confidential and will be used to improve our games in the future!

I hope to see everyone soon on the field!  Again, Thanks to everyone who came!

Pictures are posted in General Game Discussion
