Title: Site downtime
Post by: Fresnel on April 08, 2012, 05:55:34 AM
Is it just my connection being funny, or has AA gone down every night this week in the wee hours of the morning?

What times are we talking about?  I haven't noticed anything and I'm usually on all night.

Once at 3a I'm not really worried about.  Maintenance has to be done on the server at some point.  Every morning is a different story though.

oh yeah I know. you asked for a time and I gave one. I doubt there is a real problem. if it does turn out to be every morning around the same time. assuming the site owner is available for such matters, have him check the site's internal reset clock. (or something like that, been a year since I owned a site, not %100 sure what its called anymore) basically its when the server refreshes to ensure that it is up to date and has no backsite errors that need to be addressed.

I noticed it this morning around 4AM. I actually posted this thread between downtimes, it was down just before, came up a bit, and then went down again. Yesterday morning it was down for a while, from just before 2AM to about 5AM. Other days I can't give specific times on, but it feels like it's been down at least six of the last seven nights.

I work the graveyard shift, so I'm on ALL NIGHT because I have nothing to do at work, so I tend to notice these things. It's one of those issues where I hit the bookmark, the page loads for a moment, and then says it's down. If I reload, it thinks for less than a second before saying it's down again.

I've noticed it pretty consistently every night when I check around 10 p.m. Next day in the morning, no problem.

Odd question, but does anyone who's been having issues have Cox as their ISP? I do, and their service has been rather shoddy lately... Could be part of the issue as well.

Is this at work that you are having an issue or at home?

I'll have to get back to you on that, I haven't had a day off since I noticed it.

I've had a few problems but like xXmusicimpactXx I also have cox. I notice the site will go down for a minute then I refresh the page and it's up again. It's been doing that for quite a few websites so I wouldn't say it's AA. I'm thinking it's more of a Cox problem for me.
Title: Re: Site downtime

^^^^ Exactly, but for me it's just AA.

I have Cox with the 30mpbs Down 15mbps up, Site loads perfectly fine, although sometimes, I will try to access the site, and firefox will return a "Couldn't find http://airsoftarizona.com/blahblahblah.aspx (http://airsoftarizona.com/blahblahblah.aspx)", when trying to first load the site, I try again, and it loads fine.

Quite odd.
Mine does that, but it persists for hours until it'll load properly

Occasionally mine does the same thing with Firefox on the first load, then a magic F5 will fix it. It has done it on my school's network, with Century Link, and Cox.

This is actually the first refresh of the night that's worked for me, it's been down from the moment I sat down at my desk at 11PM until at least my previous check an hour or so ago, but it was working at 10:45 when I left my house (which routs through the same substation). And my work is on Centurylink/Qwest, for what it's worth.

Kind of weird that it looks like it might affect us all differently.

It was definitely down for me during this period. So I guess that settles it. And now I'm back home and it's working just fine. Sorry for the false alarm, admins.

I wonder why it works fine when I'm at home but shits itself 90% of the night when I'm at work? It's the same internet service routed through the same Qwest substation, and the only filter they have at work is a blanket ban on any page with "porn" in the URL (which really kills the gun porn blogs).

Because Qwest sucks.  That's the reason I asked is because the two people saying they have repeated issues are using Qwest.

Because Qwest sucks.

You mean CentryLink, Because changing their name made everyone forget how shitty they were, right?  ;D

They didn't update their host names.  All their servers are still "Qwest".

yeah I'm aware, my point is they suck.  ;)

I have noticed this too from time to time. I find it to be more of a Server/Connection/Que overloaded or packet loss type problem than actual downtime. I'm running Cox, 27mpbs on a Motorola DOCSIS 3 Modem. Every time I see it happen, I open a second tab and load a random webpage to verify my connection. But the second webpage has always loaded immediately, when AA has sometimes taken up to 20 secs before it will acknowledge refresh requests.

Personally, I don't think it's anything to worry about, since it's not like your running transactions on this website, or any time sensitive information stuff. But if you'd like, I can try to keep a log of every time I run into it.

Hiccup at 12:02pm today, roughly 10 secs before refresh clicks worked.

What's the error message you are receiving when this happens?  Also, do you have an alternate connection you can use (IE cell phone)?
Title: Re: Site downtime
Post by: Dayton on April 14, 2012, 03:51:15 PM
Generally no error message, usually just no response from page load or refresh requests. (stuck loading page, with no packet updates)  Sometimes firefox will give me an error saying "The page could not be loaded."

I have run into this from time to time at my new house (today), at my last house (also cox), and on my phone (sprint network).  My phone is not fast enough to check the website in time when I notice a problem when using my computer.

Sometimes when I load it on my cell phone (Samsung Exhibit 2 4G) I get an error page that says it can't load the webpage. I try it again and it loads fine.

Again at 4:11pm today. Did the same thing as above. Took me about 10 secs again to get it to refresh.

Do you want me to keep track of these? Or just ignore them? It doesn't really bother me much.
Title: Re: Site downtime
Post by: XavierMace on April 17, 2012, 05:42:07 PM
What's the exact error message you are getting?  If it's just "Page Cannot be Displayed" then it doesn't really help.  But if you are getting a DNS error or something, that would give an indication.  That said, if we are talking about getting the error message once and a refresh fixes it, I would say it's a non-issue.
Title: Re: Site downtime
Post by: Dayton on April 18, 2012, 06:07:24 AM
Like I say, no error message. It just sits there and tries to load a page, waiting and waiting, with no progress on load. After about 2 seconds I'll hit refresh, and it will do the same thing. Then about another 5 or 6 secs later, I'll hit refresh again and it will work just fine, as if nothing ever happened.

So maybe I'm getting twitchy and don't give it time to throw an error message at me. Next time it happens, I'll just leave it alone and see what I get.

I was just getting the "could not load page (maybe you aren't connected to the internet?)" error, but I obviously was connected to the internet because my instant messengers stayed online and my connection to the Minecraft server never dropped or lagged.

Also, since that one week I haven't seen this error. So that was weird, but I guess it was probably on my end.

Yeah, I was definitely having this same problem. And it wasn't like the old one, where it was just a generic 404 error, the BBS itself was returning a traffic overload error code.

AA is hosted by DreamHost.  If I'm not mistaken, their database servers and web servers are separate from each other, much like GoDaddy.  It's likely that the shared database server was experiencing DoS attacks of some sort or it could have just had other issues.  I noticed that a few other sites I frequent (XDA) were having traffic & database issues as well today.

No, Dreamhost is just fucking retarded.  Based on the email that went out they decided to wait to replace a Raid Controller battery until they had a drive failure as well.
