Looking to buy a Remington 700 sps tactical
« on: March 04, 2011, 01:02:38 PM »
I'm just wondering if any of you have recommendations of where I should buy from? I was thinking about just ordering through Sports Chalet or Bass Pro Shop.

I'll also be looking to purchase a scope and would like to get something with a variable zoom with a max of at least 10x and at least a 40mm tube. I don't want to spend more on the scope than the gun is worth and I know very little about Real Steal Scopes.

The SPS tactical is a good start and is a good barreled action. You will want to replace the stock asap as the Houge overmold touches the barrel when firing supported. A good replacement can be had for around $250+( that is up to you on how much you are willing to spend.) You may want to consider a rem 700p verses the sps tac, it comes with a HS Precision stock and is only normally a couple hundred more.  Optic-wise a fixed 10x is good.  Something with a 30mm main tube and around a 40mm objective. The Leupold mark 4 is a solid choice.  You also have to consider you mounting system, not an area you want to skimp on.  You will always spend more on a good optical system than most rifles.

I hope this is helpful to you. This is all assuming you are looking to start into precision shooting.

I have a M700 SPS Tactical and yes the Hogue stock sucks. I was shooting a 1.5 inch MOA and 100 yds using a harris bipod. I then went to placing the stock across my ruck sack up close to the action and it immediately improved to a .6 MOA.

Not counting the shooter or the ammo, the stock has a greater effect on a rifles consistency than anything else.

Since you are looking for a 10x scope I assume you are planning on shooting out past 500 yds. I would also recommend a 20 MOA base for your scope. Placing a round on a steel plate at 1000yds is an awesome feeling.

As for the scope, for recreational target shooting (ie. non competition/combat/hunting) you should spend at least half of what you pay for the rifle new. For hunting the price of the scope will equal the value of the rifle. For combat then it will be the most expensive thing you own, lol.

The reason for this generic price range is more related to the durability and longevity of a scope in harsh environments. From a recreational shooting POV most scopes, if quality controls are in place, are accurate enough to start with.

However, once your skill in shooting your rifle bypasses the quality of your equipment you will start to see clearly its limitations. Then you will require better equipment and pawn off your newly realized "crap" to the next new shooter. In summary, the cheaper the scope the sooner you will realize that is sucks.

Vortex PST is also a good and very affordable option for glass on your new stick.  SFP can be had at around $600, FFP around $900. They have a MIL/MIL or MOA/MOA options.
