I split this off from KillerDragn's sales post so we didn't drag it further off topic.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 overclocked to 3.0GHz
4GB Corsair Dominator DDR2 RAM
Asus P5E Motherboard
EVGA GeForce GTX 275 Superclocked
EVGA GeForce 8800GT Superclocked (for PhysX)
Intel 40GB SSD (OS)
Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB (apps)
Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB (multimedia)
Patriot Inferno 100GB (games only)

I tell you a combination of the SSDs and the fact that multiplatform games are accommodating 5 year old consoles are the only reason I can play stuff like Deus Ex Human Revolution with maxed out graphics settings and 1920x1080.

To be honest, you should only upgrade when your machine was obsolete.  Now that I'm finally making cash (kinda), I wanted to update my 5 year old system.  I bought this new rig on labor day.

It's like SSDs.  Do you really need them?  No.  You buy them just to say you have the latest technology.  I see no difference loading WoW from my 2TB than loading WoW from my SSD.  They're both instant.

Post by: XavierMace on September 06, 2011, 06:27:55 PM
That's because it's WoW.  It's much easier to see the difference when doing more HDD intensive tasks.  Plus, mine are striped which further increases the difference.  I don't think I've ever gone more than a year without upgrading something on my computer.

I plan on purchasing a 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 whatchamawhoosit now and probably a 60gb or 30gb SSD to run Windows off of, and save some more space on it for when BF3 comes out and I hunger for uber load times, use the 1TB for everything else, games, storage, data, videos, music, bulk stuff.

30Gb SSD is going to be a pretty tight squeeze if you are running Vista/7 and want BF3 on there as well.  Just a warning on the Samsung drive (I have two of them), they are a little bit loud for a sub-10k RPM hard drive and they aren't the speediest of drives either.  However, I haven't had any failures yet which I can't say for my SSD's or the last 3 WD drives I purchased.

Don't cheap out on the SSDs either, get something quality, the big three right now are Intel, OCZ, and Corsair. They all have 3rd generation versions of their flagship SSDs out right now, but unless you are dead set on getting SATA III, their 2nd gen stuff should be more than enough for what you need, they usually saturate SATA II so you are getting your money's worth.

That said, my first set of OCZ's failed and were RMA'd.  The replacement set has been going strong but the RMA process took just under 2 months for me to get my replacement drives which is complete BS.  LOL, actually the new ones are exactly one year old, today.

Yeah I'm glad I avoided the first generation of SSDs, I've heard nothing but horror stories about them. Second generation and onward are definitely better, I couldn't be happier.

No, I just had initially posted an incomplete list and had the info posted on ASR so I just copied and pasted.

First build from scratch ever, I think I did really good on the cable management, I still gotta tuck away a stray sata cable or two.

Not bad for a first build.  One thing I'd recommend doing quick is twisting rotating the fans so the cable has as little distance to travel as possible then twist up the fan cable.  Looks a bit cleaner and you don't have to worry about a cable falling into a fan.  What's it running temperature wise right now?

All my stuff is kinda dated now.

cpu: Intel i7 920 @ 2.67
mb: Biostar x58 tpower2
hdd: Hitachi Deskstar 1tb(with addition of about 4tb from other drives to store movies)
gpu: Galaxy 460 768mb
ram: GSkill Sniper 1300mhz 2x4gb
case: Silverstone LC13-E in black(HTPC case)
psu: Raidmax 550w
Cooler: Corsair h70
Keyboard: Logitech g11
Mouse: Logitech g9
Monitor: Sharp Aquos lcgp3-32r 32 inch

Originally I was gonna build it up to be powerful and overclock it, but instead I just kinda built a HTPC runnning alot of movies to my 62"tv or my projector. I do have it running really cool at 32c to 42c at load(has quite a few fans in it)

I recently did a rebuild of my very first build that I did about 2 years ago and so far I have this:

AMD FX-4100 3.6Ghz
Asus Crosshair V Formula
8Gb OCZ AMD Black Edition DDR3-1600
2x Samsung 830 64Gb SSD in RAID0 for OS and games
WD Caviar Green 500 Gb for storage
XFX Radeon HD 6970
Seasonic X-750 PSU
AZZA Solano case
Logitech Z906 5.1 surround sound
Razer Lycosa Mirror Keyboard
Razer Copperhead Mouse
Razer Nostromo Gamepad
Samsung 23" LCD HDTV front and center
2x Samsung 23" LCD monitors for left and right eyefinity panels

If I get a chance to clean up my desk and make it presentable anytime soon I'll post a pic of my 6048x1080 goodness.

I have My custom built computer. (I built it with my uncle, so i am not sure of all the specs. I dont play computer games alot so yes.) ((I really only ever use it to play anything free on steam, by perfect world entertainment, or Blizzard excluding WoW)
all i know about it is it has a sabertooth motherboard, and an asus moniter.

I then have my xbox. New 250gig slim version. I own over 70 different games for it. (Not including my countless indie games)
 And 3 controllers + some turtlebeach X31's.

I have ps2 that barely works, 2 wired controllers, one wireless. About 12 games, only 3 of those work though.

Then after that, I have my Nintendo 64 with upgraded graphics card. 2 controllers, one memory pak, and Mario Kart 64 and Pokemon Staduim.

Not bad, although I'd consolidate down to one larger SSD if the wallet allows.  Only done some slight refreshes to mine.  1TB MX100, GTX970, H440 Razer case.  Still spending all my money on server stuff and car.  Updated both of the ESX hosts, working on adding a 3rd.  Added another 4 spindles to the SAN and a MX100 for the ZIL.  Moved to a Supermicro case, then added a second SAN for backups.  Counting the stuff I'm selling, I've got pushing 80TB of storage at the house.  LOL.

Damn, and I was astounded I hit 44 TB...

External only.
Looking to upgrade my cpu and MB soon though, since I got my 980ti.
