Ummm...I hate to break this to you, but if you tried to construct an S-System from aftermarket parts, you'd end up forking out somewhere in the vicinity of $700.-  The SIRS, whether from Samurai or ICS, is close to $200.-  Then add the folding sights, enhanced ("LE Style") buttstock, one-piece metal barrel, etc. and you're looking at serious money.  The basic S-System, however, is around $320.- less battery.  Even with gearbox upgrades factored in, it's cheaper for me to buy an S-System M4 and convert my existing M4 to a short-barrel CQB gun than to buy a SIRS (plus accessories) for the M4 I have now and then buy a seperate CQB weapon.

On the subject of the M14, I'm going to wait until I have some data on the upcoming Hudson M14/M21.  Reports say it's going to be a gas-blowback, which IMO is a better choice for a marksman's weapon, since it eliminates the trigger lag all AEGs suffer (except for the PSG-1).

Gas Powered Guns /

I have a Western Arms MEU/SOC, and as several folks who were at Cold Burn can attest, it performs very well out of the box.  On the chrono it shot a consistent 310fps with green cas, and the performance held during rapid fire.
The build material is, as busta_cap says, a very hard composite.  On the MEU the weight is added by using grip scales made of metal and covered with a tough, rubber coating on the outside.  All levers work as they do in the original.

I haven't shot the KJW guns, but I have to say I don't for a moment regret the extra money I spent on the MEU.

Gas Powered Guns / Weird problem with a KSC Mk.23 SOCOM
« on: August 21, 2004, 11:03:27 PM »
Recently I noticed that my KSC Mk.23 SOCOM is doing something rather strange, and I'm wondering if anyone's ever encountered this before and/or knows a fix for it.

To make a long story short, I recovered some of the BBs I'd fired through the gun, and noticed that all of them had an identical groove shaved into the surface.  The groove is circular in cross-section, and does not appear to have been made by the impact of the BB on the target(I fired test rounds into a towel to be certain).  The pistol also seems to be using more gas than it should...the gas isn't lasting for an entire magazine.

If anyone knows what's causing this and how to fix it, please let me know.  The gun's scheduled for some serious upgrades in the next few months, and I want to have it working properly before I modify it.

AEG's / One-piece cylinder & head from K2

I saw these on the DEN Trinity website and thought they looked interesting.  Anyone used these?  If so, how are they?  What piston head would be reccomended for them?

If you put a light on, put a second one on...because the first one might break or run out of batteries.
Besides, how else can you get the gun to look like an illustration out of SureFire: Combat Tactics :-)

Seriously, that gun looks very cool.  Congratulations...and Merry Christmas!

Whose metal body did you use?  The markings look like the ones on one of the Hurricane bodies.

Oh, well...I guess I'm not as current on developments as I used to be.

I suppose the stand-alone feature would be useful for law-enforcement units like riot squads who are looking for a way to launch less-lethal 40mm loads that's more modern (and reliable) than surplus M79 launchers, but for the military user I simply don't see the point.

That's interesting.  I'd like some hard info on the Hurricane bodies before I make my decision, but it's good to know the G&P bodies are usable.

Speaking of metal bodies, the M4 I took to Cold Burn is going to be getting one in the not-too-distant future.  I've narrowed the choice down to the G&P version and the one by Hurricane.  Any thoughts?

Unhhhh...no.  That item does not actually exist as far as I know.  Therefore the Spec Ops/Mil Sim crowd, who are normally pretty realism-oriented, wouldn't buy it.  My guess would be the Hollywood/John Woo/Anime action flick crowd, who are too tied up with "Looks killer cool, dude!" to realize that it just adds another piece of junk to carry, inspead of combining the launcher and rifle the way they're supposed to be.

I agree.  Be real careful what you buy on ebay.  There's essentially no quality control.  Not to mention that generally you get what you paid for.  Buy a $30.- tac vest and you get a vest that's worth about $30.- as far as durability and quality goes.  There's a reason the name-brand stuff is pricey...it's designed to hold together when you yank on the mag pouch covers, or throw yourself on your belly when someone opens up on you.  If you're really strapped, bet one of the basic chest rigs by Tactical Tailor.  They hold eight M16 mags, will accept MP5 mags, and are priced under $100.- for the most part.

Then start saving your pennies for a Blackhawk or Eagle One rifleman's vest :-)
