What brand of magazines?
« on: March 15, 2005, 06:51:29 PM »
Got Rifle? Check.
Uniform? Check.
Load Bearing Gear? Check.

Time to make myself a shopping list for fleshing out my hobby.

First on the hitlist, more magazines! To that end I thought I would solicit opinions from the pros. I have a new CA M4 (M15a4) and all I have right now are two high caps. I want to buy some lowcaps, but dunno what brand to order. naturally the number one concerne is reliability, with long term durability as a close second.

STAR mags are great, but they tend to give you problems with feeding.  When i first got mine they didnt work at all until one night when i opened up the gun and fiddeled around and magicaly they worked.  You best off getting a bunch of TM standard mags or some GP midcaps.

TM standards. They are the way to go. I think cochise might still have some for sale so contact him. I have used STAR's before and did not really like them. They kept jamming on me and I had to keep smackin em to get them to feed right. I have never had a single TM standard jam or fail on me and i NEVER lube my mags!

I like G&P mags carry more than standards. Whatever you do do not buy STAR mags. Repeat after me "I will not be a cheap ass and by STAR mags." Got it? good!!! Also do not go and buy CA mags. Repeat after me "CA mags are crap." People you cant say what you want but I will never ever buy M16 STAR mags. I dont care about your reasons for liking them, I have heard it all. But please if your looking for realism Dont go STAR go standard. S.T.A.R stands for "Stuck Today Again Randy"

You all complain about those too much. I had a box that worked PERFECTLY fine. They didn't misfeed or any of the crap you guys claim they do. Suck it up, and realize your gun is the problem, not the mags.

Exactly Ian.  I first thought i got an entire box of bad mags, but i finaly got them to magicaly work.  10 mags for 50 bucks is well worth the investment.

I have yet to use STAR mags, but I can speak from experience that you will never have a problem with TM mags.  The only thing you need to watch out for is spring compression.  This would be true for all types of spring feed mags.  I make sure to unload any full mags left over after a game.  I once left a few mags loaded for several weeks that I forgot about.  Re-stretching the spring only helped for a short while.  They still worked, but would not feed every once and a while.  I eventually replaced them.

I have no idea if the mags springs are available seperately anywhere.  I replaced the whole mag.

I think the best mags are the ones that hold bbs.....just kidding. If you were really cool (I am so I dont have to worry about it) buy like 10 standards and you will be good to go. Hicaps suck unless you are a fullauto whore or a ammo waster or have no gear. So lets recap for people that are slow.

Standards= Good

Starmags=Ok... but not good.

Hicaps/Midcaps= Ammo wasters/Full auto whores/ I have no gear/ I like to have the rattling sound when I run around.

I have never had a problem with the STAR Mags. I think thay are great because they limit you to about 30 rounds and adds to the realism of Airsoft.

It makes no sense to be in a mil-sim environment where your rifle range is 1/10 that of real steel and your mags hold 10 times as much.

Personnally, I feel if your going to play airsoft and go through the trouble of buying all that body armor and assault gear to look real then why not act real. Mags jam in real life. I love it. It adds more risk, more challange and requires more skill to play.

Of couse I understand that many of you use trigger control even though you have high caps and thats ok, but it still reduces the number of mag changes during an engagement which does degrade the realism.

However, when I see someone empty a 400rd high cap into a bush and their gun hasn't over heated or exploded like a real steel would. It just takes the fun out of it and the paintball mentality rears it ugly head.

I guess I just find it funny that it seems that we are more interested sometimes in looking cool than playing a challenging game of skill.

Kind of like chess pieces play checkers.

I still feal that STAR stands for "Stuck Today Again Randy." However, for an AK-47 the mags are much different. It would be interesting to see how a STAR mag would work for an AK. I dont think they are great for M16 varents. I use to have a lead finger on the triger, spraying to show no mercy to the person on the other end. I developed that from playing with Asians in CA who like to cheat, and where there was high fps in CQB games. I now have mellowed abit, and I am moving to standards, and mid caps. I dont like winding my fingers off anymore, and found that standards are more reliable.

30 rounds is not "realistic" in my book, considering the inaccuracy and lack of range of airsoft rifles.

Jeff, I use TM Standards and have done so since I started airsoft.  No jams, no problems at all.  I beat the piss out of them too, and they take it!  I have 11 mags (for a 10+1 loadout), and have never needed more than that.  I usually carry 8+1.  Like you said, you've never even needed that many rounds in a real firefight.  Keep in mind though, airsoft range an accuracy leave something to be desired!

I have also used a CA HiCap in my M4 without a problem.

Same with STAR 30-rounders.  I had no problem with the ammount of BBs in each mag, but prefer 68 rounds to overcome the inconsistencies of the gun.

That's all I've used.  Any opinion about mags other than that would be "what I've heard", and I don't get down like that!

I use mostly TM standards. I have a few CA standards and have never had a problem with them. I got a couple of Hi-caps when I bought guns.....hate them....noisy, have to be wound, unrealistic and all but one have broken. I have a couple of the G & P mid-caps they took a while to break in, but they work OK now......although I don't use them. Oh and I put Ranger puls on all my standards. They work great.
