Title: Operation Oasis - 10 July 2010
Post by: TheBoy988 on May 03, 2010, 08:35:35 PM
Operation Oasis

20 years have passed since the last nuke fell and civilization, if it still can be called that, still lives on...Now run by military personnel who survived, colonies are more like military militia on the hunt for new land and anything that can help their survival...

Tan Nation, being a stationary colony, has decided to stay put and defend to the death any outsiders who may stumble upon their oasis. Supplies stock pilled and morals high, Tan Nation feels secure.

Green Nation felt their survival hindered on a nomadic lifestyle that depends on pillaging to gain new supplies. Traveling for more than three months and supplies running low, green nation is getting desperate but finally finds Tan nation's camp.

Refusing the deal to stay and help out in exchange for supplies, Green Nation builds camp outside Tan Nation’s village. Fearing a threat and the possibility that a battle may break out any day, both nations mobilize and gear up for a full out war.

During the recon missions a couple of Tan civilians were captured as bargaining chips. Tan refusing to do business in such a manner, a war now seems more of a possibility than ever!

I knew Chip had altered the rules to comply with MTT and i know MTT don't have an age limit as long as those under 16 (i think) have full face masks

So where is this MTT UAC? And what does that acronym stand for? Any pictures of this site so I can get a better feel for the gear to pack/wear? I am very interested in this.

Excellent questions. MTT stands for marauders tactical training, they are a company that offers tactical training with both airsoft training weapons and fire arms. UAC stands for Urban Assault Course, the UAC is MTT's home field where they hold a large amount of their events. Expect a large amount of close quarters engagements as well as field work. You can find information and photos of their course at http://www.marauders.us/.

Also put us down for either green or tan, just as long as you tell us what team we're on.

Age limit will follow MTT's rules. If under age you will need a parent signed weaver. They are available at MTT's website.

well i guess im off the team for not getting acu's so i will not...NOT be funding this to be held at MTT...maybe the next team i join will set something up for my original plan to have people who couldnt aford to play at mtt a chance to see their awsome uac field they have...

sorry for any inconvenience

i promise what ever team picks me up i will be more than willing to set up this whole idea again...i think its a great idea to hold a sponsored event at MTT that is free due to the fact the MTT UAC cource is probly one of the best if not the best field in arizona from what ive seen personally and in my research into the sport...and being free allows people who couldnt aford it with the ecnomical time that has hit to play there...

Well... the MTT course isn't all that great IMHO. The town is off-scale, and it's always so dusty. Have to clean ALL my gear every time... even the stuff I leave in the car gets full of sand and dirt. I hear four peaks is an awesome AO too. Should still be fun.

So you're saying now I have to go out and buy a full set of ACUs because I've been assigned to the green team? Heck, I still have work to do on my primary weapon before the game too, now I need to spend MORE? Whatever happened to as long as your colors are green/tan based, you're good to go. I mean I understand the concept of milsim and all, just not everyone can afford to go pay for new gear for one game. Please clarify if I am wrong. Thank you.

Okay, so I can base my gear accordinly off of the position I wish to play as long as my colors are green? Well, since you reset the roster is it too late to change myself and LTFracture to Tan? (Most of our gear is tan, so it'd save some $$$)

Amazing. Thank you for that, it helped out more than you know. In that case, you have SSGFracture and LTFracture down for Tan's Scout/Sharpshooter team. :D (Yes, my weapon will comply with the FPS rules. I'll change springs and it'll be down to like 380fps.)

Also, what are the terrain expectancies? Boulder, bushes, open desert, buildings?

it's going to be a bit rugged up at four peaks, definitely no buildings...

i wouldnt say there is a whole lot of open desert, its mostly trees, bushes, some boulders, etc. it's not as rough as mt. ord but here's a video:

You can expect to see a lot of hills and brush. Maintaining an over watch at all times is going to be the name of the game.

For sure, that's what we're best at; recon and going unnoticed with headshots here and there. (Torso-shots are too easy. ;) ) Are we allowed to use .25-.28s in our guns as long as the FPS stays in range? With all the brush it'd be nice to have the penetration of .28 at +100ft.

You can use what ever ammo you wish. We will be using 0.20g BBs to chrono just to make sure the guns have the allowed energy output.

CHANGING WEIGHT OF YOUR AMMO TO LOWER FPS DOES NOT WORK. This is because the energy output of the gun does not change with heavier BBs.

I've shot hotter with .28s than .20s on a chrono at AZ Paintball Depot, which is why I asked. That's with a M120 spring.

Lol that wasn't directed at you in any way. I just know MANY MANY people that say they will just use heavier BBs to lower their velocity. I'll be chronoing with 0.20g BBs.

Sounds fuckin' awful, man. How do you handle it?

Well, I start by pulling out my tampon and getting the sand out of my vagina.

and THEN I use midol to clear the barrels.

I finish the cleaning with a nnice misting of a lavender scented spray so that everything is fresh smelling when I get the stuff out after that.

Okay, because you're 14, maybe you didn't understand these idiots! :P
But! No, your friend don't need their parents at the field to play, as long as a single parent is there, that can take responsibility for all your friends, then it's fine if you bring your parent, or if one of their parents go, and take responsibility for you, and all your friends.

there should be a convoy from the rally point up to the AO for guys that don't know their way

Also, please let me know what team you will be playing on so i can keep a running roster.

this game will be hard-pressed to hit the standards BGA set for the four peaks AO, i dont think i have ever played a game at that AO that was as well organized and utilized the area in the way that op did.

even in the shadow of idaho, hopefully it will be a good time.

i personally think that the posts are too slow for this op and when it gets closer to the game time people will find other better things or games to do...i hope not but lets see if im wrong...

i mean i would want a good almost full roster by now and for how many pages this topic has but its still very slim list

duuuuude. as a moderator/poster on multiple communities, i have seen my fair share of double posting..

but a triple?! that is the first in a while.. there is an edit, or modify button.. you can use that to add content to your previous reply. generally, it is considered good forum etiquette to not "double post" in the same thread, instead you should edit your previous posts to include what your subsequent additions would have contained

as to your original query, i usually wear all tan dickies, with my boots and tac gear. it has never been a problem, i'm sure you can get away with doing that as i do.

but..i mean, don't wear like, khakis and a tan tshirt... i would recommend a dickies long or short sleeved work shirt, and a pair of dickies work pants, they are about 15$ each at wal-mart if you really do not want to invest in a battle uniform at this point in time

of course, this is all speculation, the event organizer may say otherwise.

You don't have to be in a military uniform. All that matters is that you are in easily distinguishable between tan and green.

If anyone needs camo, I have a set of US woodland BDUs you may borrow.  Will fit 5'10" ish, 180lbsish.

Also, I will need a ride to the AO from the rally point.

EDIT: grammar/structure

There will be vehicles that can give you a ride.

For uniforms, we do want you wearing protective gear, as there are alot of cacti, and other plants that will snag you. As Carbon had said, you should go with wearing dickies, or even wearing camoflauge utilities.

I have a couple extra pairs of camoflauge. I have med reg woodland and desert MARPAT. I also have a pair of DCU's. If you need a pair of camoflauge to borrow, please PM me.

oh, carharts work good too. i've used those before, i have plenty since i use them for work as well. those would give you more then adequate protection, but i wouldn't advise just going out and buying a pair.. you would be better off spending the money on a battle uniform

UPDATE
I'm closing down tan side. When numbers return to a more even match i will reopen tan.

I am now in the process of finalizing each teams objectives. Please keep in mind it will be VERY beneficial to your team to have some sort of command structure and, if your not the command, to follow their leadership. I will not assign a team to be the command element for this game as i've been volintold (not that im complaining) to be command many times and sometimes i just feel like being a grunt out there. With that said, if you would like your team to be the command element for you color feel free to shoot me a PM. I'll announce the Command teams at the end of the week.

Hello TheBoy,

Put Drew W. + 1 (Brother Ian) down for Green Team.  Total of +2.

Never been to this site before, so it should be interesting ;).

Sorry if this question has been asked and answered, but what are the google map coordinates (latitude + longitude) for the actual game site?  I understand we're meeting at the Chevron at AZ-87N and N. Fort McDowell Rd, but I'd like to have an overhead view of the actual playing area.

Thanks Mates.  See you out there.

Howdy All,

I second that on the heat.  Even through a BDU sleeve, my arms felt like charred steak.  Hehe, but if I went out in the Arizona desert, mid-day in the middle of Summer and expected it to be cool, then shame on me!

To The Boy,

Thanks for putting on the game my friend.  It was an ambitious endeavor, and a great turnout.  (About 50 people or so, so I think this was the largest game I've ever played so far).  Game play turned out pretty good.

Before I go on further, I should point out something about my little sliver of the Op.  Myself, my brother Ian, and 3 members of BFA were the Hostage Security Team for Green.  After 2 of BFA went off to conduct recon on Tan base, it was just us three with the world's mouthiest hostage (heh).

We went WAY out in the sticks to keep this guy hidden, and I think the only reason he was never captured was because we never actually needed to walk that far into the middle of nowhere (shame on us).

The end result, and thus my own review of the game, was that it was a lot of walking in the heat, with very little trigger time.  Now I obviously can't hold The Boy, the game play, or anything else responsible for that.  It was our choice to do that.  But the inevitable result is that I ranked my experience at this game at about average.  With Hostage Guard duty for the first half, and me taking a knee beside a ridge to guard Green flag's flank for the second half, I don't think I ever shot at anyone the whole game.

Again, this is me describing my own little slice of the game.  And I'm not trying to make this a complaint, or to reflect this onto The Boy or Operation Oasis in general.  The only real reason that the game play was slow was because of my own choices.  And while I did enjoy talking with Trevor of BFA and the hostage (who was clearly adopting his role), & doing actions to help the Green Team's cause, I suppose the only thing I can say about the game is that I would have preferred for the action to be a little more concentrated.

So, to The Boy, I have to say a few things.  Ambitious game mate, with a great story, and I loved the turnout.  The AO is amazing too!  A hel*uva hike, but amazing opportunities for battle.  And it sounds like other people had a great time (except for the heat, hehe).  The only thing I would have preferred would have been to concentrate the movement of both teams towards each other.  It seemed as though with a hostage to find, and a secret Green HQ to find, and a base with supplies to guard, Tan Team was forced to spread itself thin.  Green also had the same issue:  to protect the hostage (our job, hence the cross-country hike, hehe), protect the flag, and steal said supplies or trade the hostage for them.

My suggestion to concentrate firefights into a smaller area, and force confrontation, would be to make fewer objectives, or make their locations known.  If the Green Flag stays secret for about half an hour, Green can move freely.  But then maybe an admin (I think Kevin was Green's) would give a hint to Tan over the radio.  I.E:  Green Flag is located near a ridge to the West, along a wide wash to the South, or some other visual reference that can be seen from a good distance).  This would force Green to consolidate on its Flag, give Tan a better chance at finding it, and thus the teams would butt heads more often.

Fewer objectives, or objectives that are located somewhat close to each other, is another way to concentrate the teams.

Another way is to break the Op up into separate phases.  Instead of both teams defending and attacking at once, have one team attack and the other defend almost exclusively, for a part of the Op.  Green's flag is secret for the first half, and are free to attack with almost 100% of their team.  Tan is discouraged from attacking, and must defend their supplies with almost 100% of their team.  If Green's attack fails, the phase switches to second half.  Tan learns Green's Flag location, Green must pull back to defend, and Tan is more free to attack.  Bottom Line:  More numbers at each side instead of split in half both ways.

If Green needs an excuse to pull back, other than their flag's location being declared, maybe this.  Tan Admin taps a few Green players to become NPCs.  They're captured, go into Tan base.  Tan broadcasts to Green Commander that those POWs will be killed if Green doesn't pull back, which Green Commander then tries to enforce.  It also can fit within the story, because you can say the Green Flag's location was "beaten" out of the POWs.  Plus a possible Green side mission is to now rescue their comrades.

These are just brain cells I'm burning out loud, and examples of ways to consolidate the action.  That's all I really have to say about the game.  Again, this isn't meant to tear it down at all.  It was a good game overall, with a lot of impressive qualities.  And I did have fun for a lot of it, just from conversations and the act of helping the cause.  The only thing I can think to add to it would be to concoct clever ways to concentrate the action, while still making it part of the story.

Overall, I was glad I came out.  Although if I do it again, I think I'll pack lighter.  No more carrying everything but the kitchen sink in my gear to a day game in 114 degree weather, hehe.  I gotta learn sometime, right?

Thanks for putting this game on The Boy.  I did have fun, and would be glad to do it again.  Peace out Brother!

~ D.W.

BTW, I have some pictures of green team walking to the AO. Then from there I saw only two people - who were already out - and was a little too worried trying to not collapse from heat exhaustion. There's no shade out there :(  Anyway, I'll get them up in a few hours.

Thank you Drew W. for your input! It was very constructive and useful. I have taken your suggestions into account and adjustment will be made. I'm going to start the planning of my next operation this week.

To every one that attended:
Thanks you all very much for participating in my very first ever operation. I had a blast hosting the event! I also learned a lot from my own observations and from input coming from all of you. I haven't decided to have a continuation of Oasis at Four Peaks or if im going to create a whole new operation for a new AO. It seemed like you guys enjoyed having the objectives kept secret, specially to each side. It was my goal to make a game the required more tactical thinking and mind power then a heavy trigger finger and a lot of man power.

I suppose now would be a good time to discuss what i was going for with this operation and why i did things the way i did.
I decided to keep the objectives a secret till the day of the operation and limit who knew them for a few reasons. I didn't want each side knowing the others goals. Although knowing what your enemy is trying to do does create good fire fights it kind of takes away from the realism of the whole thing i believe. I also kept the objectives secret from most of the team because i was trying to create a chain of command with in the teams naturally rather then appointing team leaders then squad leaders under that. I thought it would allow friends to stay together and give the entire game a bit of new feel.
Next i decided to allow each team to set up their own base of operations for a few reasons. I felt that having it this way would give a rare opportunity to perform an actual recon mission not seen very often in airsoft. The down fall of the recon mission in this particular game was the lack of maps i was unable to acquire. Another reason i did this was to allow each team multiple choices on how they wanted to play. For instances, after tan team located the green base they had the options to observe there movements (to make it easier to locate the hostages) or full on assault the base to recover the hostages. This didn't end up happening because the game moved much slower then i anticipated. (it wasn't easy guessing how fast it would go, should work much better next time.)
Next thing i did with this game was to reduce the amount of rules i had for game play. I didn't add a boundary to the game because i wanted to allow the game to take a natural course. The people that wanted to bust out a 4 mile hike to get the jump on an objective or, in this case, keep a hostage concealed could do so. I wanted you guys to be able to come up with clever ideas and not have to worry about breaking a rule of engagement. In the end all is fair in love and war right?

That was some of my ideas while writing the operation. Obviously not all of my ideas came to fruition this time but im sure next time i will get much closer and still give you guys enough trigger time a truly excellent game gives you. For a first attempt i certainly cant complain about it being an average game with the new things i've tried. The turn out was WAY more then i expected so thank you all for that.

Jeremy

Thanks for the reply The Boy.  I didn't know this was your first ran Op.  Congrats Mate!  All's considering, it DID go off very smoothly.  You should be proud.  ;)

In Hindsight, I DID like the open-ended nature of the operation.  Most of the games I go to DO involve football-field style face-offs.  Linear movement, teams opposite each other, left and right boundaries, etc.  There's nothing wrong with that obviously, because 1)  This isn't a PC game.  We can't create levels to our heart's desire on a computer, we have to work with whatever land we can play on.  ;)  2)  Those kinds of games DO naturally have some intense firefights, which I like ;).

But with this AO, there WERE massive opportunities for Escape & Evade, Recon (never heard of that in an airsoft game before, hehe), big flanking movements, etc.  The open-ended game design, secret Objectives, and the AO helped encourage those kinds of calls, so that came off successfully.

As far as maps go, I'm trying to Google earth the four peaks area, then overlay that in Photoshop with some meter by meter grid coordinates (to accurate scale of course).  I dunno if I'll be successful at it, heh.  But if I am, I'll post my pic onto this forum.  ;)

All in all, great game The Boy.  Looking forward to the next one.

PS:  DFA, right!  Sorry about that.

~ D.W.

I was part of the Tan Recon Team, and I have played in a few big AO's before but nothing compared to the 2-3 mile hike I had (in my Ghillie) looking for greens flag. Those pictures that where just posted was the first time I saw the flag. Just my .02 cents here but next time lets make the flags BRIGHT colors not a subdued tan orange, My Recon team came up on the creek just below the green base where Green was lounging out, I had a nice Sniper session, before they finally realized where we were and got us, when we were walking out I must of been 30ft from the flag and NEVER saw it. In my experience the flags have to be blatantly obvious.

All in all the game was a blast, for as hot as it was the turnout was fantastic and the objectives where really cool. Great game Jeremy!!
