The new features of the latest release of phpBB are welcomed and appreciated. However, it also did away with a lot of stuff and changed stuff that I thought was fine.
I think most of the users on here probably wouldn't mind seeing the old theme (Subsilver) as an option and, for those who had the ability, their custom titles.

I would really like a few more theme options and custom titles were cool.
I also really miss the age that was next to everyone's posts. That made a huge difference and I rely on it quite a bit because I don't know a lot of the newer people.

My one biggest complaint is the titles being on the right side. I have never seen a forum in my life where the names and avatars are on the right side. Never. I find it very, very hard to get used to, especially on a large monitor where my eyes have to shift more than 15 inches to the right just to see who's talking. As sad as it is, it really reminds me of all the stupid changes that Microsoft made to Vista: "Let's just change it to make it different. It was WAY better the way it was before, but we just want Windows to be different now, not better." Logically, it was perfectly fine the way it was before with titles on the left; just keep it that way. Please, I beg.
Also, I agree with displaying age; it helps me understand exactly what kind of person I'm dealing with when I post replies. I'd say that a forum that is mostly limited to airsoft players in the state of Arizona is demographically specific enough that having the age displayed is only helpful, not hurtful.

I too miss the custom titles, age listings, and avatars/titles on the left side.

I second Raith, it confuses me.....

That all sounds good to me.

The quick reply option, where the box is already displayed, at the bottom.
Also the calender at the top.
-
Definitely need that calendar back. I liked it a whole lot.

Event Calander, this was a huge asset.
Links open up new window when selected.
So far I don't see any functional improvements over the old one, only a new look with less functionality.
Though I do like the post history shown when you write a reply, the other one didn't always do that.

dude I JUST noticed that! I was wondering where they went. I just never thought to look all the way over there. lol

I'm not going to sugar coat it...
...but I fucking hate the upgrades. I mostly hate how user info is on the right side. I'd also like to know the age of the person I'm typing to instead of opening a new tab/window.

When viewing new posts, the threads are sorted by forum, but the title of the forum isn't displayed. It used to be, and that was cool.
I think the lack of custom titles adds a bit of professionalism, but the masses want it back, so I'm on the fence.
Names and info on the right side makes reading the thread easier, but again, I'm the exception so bring it back.
Age does not matter. There are some 15 year olds that can articulate just fine, and there are 30-somethings that type like a 7 year old. I say leave it. If someone is an idiot, they're an idiot, no matter how old they are!
Another thing I would like to see changed is the post rank! Get rid of the rank. I know it's Mil-Sim, but the rank structure is cheesy. There is no need for it, give it the ax!
-
Seriously, no offence, but this is starting to get annoying. Where is my calender!!! Right side avatars are killing me as well.
-
age, left sided user info and oh yeah age...
oh Paco you did all that crazy stuff and didnt fix the time zone lol. this thing still post a day into the future! thrown me off forever!
-
I agree as well... User info on the right is downright annoying, etc, etc...
-
Atleast its up and working AZS went down the same time and its still not up yet

Hate to sound like an Echo, but....
I can live with the avatars on the right.... but the other stuff was fairly important (as anything on the Internet can be....) for smooth functionality.
Sorry for the late "chime-in" but I usually read the board at work - and Air Combat Command, in their infinite non-wisdom, decided to block all sports/recreation forums at the proxy level.... Something about non-essential traffic.... <sigh>

That all sounds good to me.
I concur.

Paco is working on getting other themes that would put a more familiar face for the forums.
There is no calendar mod yet for phpBB3. He said when one becomes available he will install it.
-
Another thing that I dislike about the new forums is that a given page will not expand to allow for a large image. If you look in any of the photo threads, you should be able to see what I'm talking about.
-
Yea, for real. I was like "Wow, that's a horribly centered photo..." then I realized they were all like that.

I remember a few versions back, we could set the browser to "reload" every few minutes, that way, when on line, we could see any new posts that came up without having to manually refresh our browsers. That would be nice....
All being said, I know we ALL appreciate this forum and find it an invaluable resource.
Thanks to all the admins and mods for their hard work.
-
The user info has been recoded to be on the left.
Calendar: Unless someone knows of a non-alpha phpBB3 calendar, it'll have to wait until one is released.
I removed some features due to CPU usage - the "auto refresh" was one of those.
Custom titles was one of those "meh" features. I think signatures are sufficient to personalize your account enough.
Pictures: the other option is to have the screen scroll if someone decides to post their 2000x4000 pictures. I got a LOT of complaints about that since you'd have to scroll to read text. If posting pics, have the decency to crop them and link to full res pictures (if you want), or use the upload feature to let the site create thumbnails.
I am working on adding more profile fields; namely AEG's owned... any other profile fields? I won't put a ton in; maybe one or two more.
-
Thanks Jason, I appreciate the effort you put into the site. Looks great!
-
I think that the modifications to the layout are great. Thanks.
I think that instead of extra profile fields, titles should be brought back. Nobody uses profiles anyway.
Thanks again for fixing the layout.
-
Jason, I really appreciate the updates!
One more thing, can you get rid of the Rank, or change it to a non-military rank system?
Also, will Moderators or Administrators have the ability to give custom titles to users? It was alike that back in the day, and it was cool.
Other than that, everything is fine. Thanks for entertaining our requests.
-
I like the "online" ribbon next to people's names. Glad to have titles on the left again. Thanks!

This forum isn't phpBB2; it's phpBB3. phpBB2 mods do not work on phpBB3 as the internal coding is very different.

I was aware of that mod, but it hasn't been released - it's in alpha development. Do you guys honestly want me to put ALPHA software on these forums and risk taking everything down? ALPHA --> BETA --> RELEASE CANDIDATE --> STABLE RELEASE

100% better with the avatar and profile snapshot moved to the left hand side, thank you!
Really the only thing listed so far that I would put on my list as 'missed' is the age line in the avatar/profile snaphot next to the posts. I know a tool is a tool is a tool no matter the age but it was always nice to be able to glance over and see an age when someone said something incredibly insightful or incredibly dumb.
To echo what has been said so far, thank you for all the work paco and any other admin folks have put into this board, it really is appreciated by many of us!
-
I like the comfort of being able to read a poster's age... but I haven't had any issue figuring it out from the quality of the post. /shrug
Thanks for the update!

Something that I think would really make, in my opinion, AA even more active on a daily basis is a working instant messenger even something simple like a one room chat. I know there had been one on the previous version of the website but I could never get it to load.
