Resizing Mags
« on: January 17, 2011, 05:49:09 PM »
So I just picked up several plastic 100 round mid caps for my M4. They all feed wonderfully, however 3/5 mags fit way too tightly in the mag well of my Echo 1 M4A1 (Stag 15). Tight to the point of almost not even being able to get them back out of the mag well. I just spent about an hour on one magazine, first filing with a small file, then outright shaving off thickness with a pair of scissors. I've tried virtually every angle and spot on the mag I can think of to file, but it's still just as tight in the mag well.... Anyone got any advice?
Thanks!

Put a light oil on the mag. Insert/remove the mag. Now look at the mag, wherever the oil has been rubbed away, grind down.

That's a good Idea^^

Make sure to check the spine on the back of the mag. I've had 1 mag where the spine was too thick, nothing else was, just the spine. Had to shave it down with a dremel, and then it fit right in.

@axisofoil That's a great idea! I'll try that.

@Dayton Yeah i think that might be the issue with mine as well, from what I could see anyway. I'll try axis's method to be sure, then dremel on from there.

Edit: So I don't have a dremel.... Any alternatives?

lol, I'm not the one that needs one. I have several Dremels as well as a larger rotary tool/mini-router. And rasps, files, sandpaper, etc. :P

But yeah, you can get these things dirt cheap.

Do you own an angry cat as well? XD
Hm I honestly thought they'd be much more expensive. I'll probably end up trying to file some more, winding up with no progress, and going and buying a rotary tool or something from good ol' Wal-Mart down the street. Lol all the way in Prescott? It would cost more in gas just to get there for me haha.

I don't own an angry cat. Cats around me end up angry, however. I hate them, I believe the feeling is well understood by them after interacting with me.

You can get base-model dremels and attachments at walmart. The basic red sanding wheel will work well for sanding plastic mags down.

I said Prescott cause Axis mentioned they were on back order and his location is set to Prescott.  ](*,)

But anyways, When I had to dremel one of mine, I just used a sanding wheel head, worked great.

Not gonna argue there... Not the biggest fan of cats myself. Evil little buggers, they are   .....

You know approximately how much a dremel with that basic sanding wheel costs?

Like I showed you, $10 at harbor freight, Probably a bit more at walmart. Check their website, online prices are most likely very close to in-store prices.
