And a word of advise, never turn to put down your glasses after someone has thrown at you, I am sure you know that now :p

Atleast it was just those two hits, to many idiots out there...

Hopefully this guy gets a visit to one of Sheriff Arpaio's jails. Inhumane conditions in there, ....

Thats how jails/prisons should be, I wouldn't refer to it as inhumane, just Jail.

Well. I've always been wary about carrying firearms in public. Concealed or not. I like to "avoid" the temptation, so to speak. I guess that's why I opted for martial arts as an alternative for carrying a weapon. Why not just be your own weapon?

Now, I'm no super ninja or anything; and although I did complete the Ishin Ryu style (completed, not mastered), it's been a few years since, and I've gotten a little rusty.

But Art, if there is anything I would really advise taking, it's martial arts. I would especially recomend Ishin Ryu because it's longer. In my class a yellow belt (second rank) could wup a green or blue belt from one of the local Teakwondo classes. It's slow, and takes at least 5 years to finish. But it's very very worth it. By the end you would be nearly unhittable. Esspecially one on one. Any fight I got in while I was in training or after I'd finished only lasted about 10 seconds, with me walking away almost unscathed. It's  very worth it.

But martial arts is just like bearing arms. You have to have restraint, and only use it when you have to. But it's effective and ultimately....less deadly. A worthy replacement for the consequeces you could face when you're forced to pull a gun on someone.

Art, before you consider getting any weapon for self-defense, you must remember that it can always be taken and used against you. I can't imagine anything worse than pulling a gun/knife on someone and getting injured by my own damn weapon.

Another big plus about taking martial arts. You definatly will learn how to turn someone's weapon against them.  8)

Another big plus about being skilled and proficient in the use of firearms. You definitely will learn how to shoot someone to death before they can turn your weapon against you.  8)

For self defense I would recommend. taking Combat Hapkido. If focuses on Situational self defense, joint locks, punch defense and different kinds of grabs say an attack grabs you lapel(sp), Shoulder, wrist. and how to get out of chokes.

Great advise... hand to hand is one thing i would like to better at, cuz i hate being underestimated, and ultimately, taken advantage of.  I can take hits, and i am told by my older friends (who are also huge) that i am very strong for my size.  Even at work, the other smaller guys are scared of me... and they tell me that, seriously.  I've even armwrestled and beaten most of my co-workers... including the assistant manager and the general manager.  I just need to learn when the best time to defend myself, how to effectively do so, and how to handle situations like these.  I just hate when people underestimate me because of my size, try to take advantage of me, and then test me.  I stand by my word... and stand for myself.

Then try Jiu Jitsu, I tried grappling with my friend who's about your size. I can overpower him, but his technique is clean so I tapped out when he got me in a guillotine head lock.

And with that said, unless the person rips your arms off... you will are pretty much armed.  My weapon of choice would be decided on by the current situation.  I wouldn't pull a weapon if the other guy doesn't have one.  As mentioned earlier in this thread, by a kid... why not carry a knife.  Way ahead of you kid... I did have a knife, but i lost it  8).  Either way, if i had it or not... i would not have pulled it out unless i knew i really needed something to defend my life, or others at risk.  Pulling a weapon on someone unarmed and actually using it is a bitch made pussy move... fight like a man...
