Careers
« on: June 22, 2006, 11:31:49 AM »
What kinda careers do you older player have? By older I mean 20+.

I'm 20 and I have no clue what I want to do. I love guns but I'm not allowed in the military. My grandfather forbid it(ww2 platoon sarge) and my family has lost some other members. I would like to join SWAT or something simliar but with all the reality shows like DOG and SWAT so many thrill seekers are joining just for that and causing accidental killings.

Im a water production/treatment operator.  What the heck is that, you're probally asking yourself. Well in short I work on well heads to produce water for a system/facility.  I do regular maintenance on them to ensure reliablity and proper operation. I also work on booster stations.  They are stations that are used to boost up system pressure.  Again I make sure that these pumps and motors are working the best that they can. I aslo work on Reverse Osmosis Systems or RO's.  These are used too take water that requires treatment before entering into your home. I used to run these units on a regular basis but now we are getting so big that it has become a full time job so we hired on more people to perform these duties. RO units are expensive piecies of equipment and have high operating costs, so if you can find water that does not require treatment the better off financially the company would be. But being in a Desert water is in high demand.

There are many different areas in this field, you can work for the USGS and get to go Hiking, 4 wheeling and ect. to take field measurements around an assigned State. There is also Lab work careers if your interested in that. In short there are many careers here that have different aspects of the job. If you have any questions about this career field, feel free to PM me.  Sometime in the nearby future we will be looking for several interns as well.

I'm an IT professional, in other words I'm the computer guy at some company. I'm graduating this week, and will be on the hunt for a full time job. I'm thinking about working for Google and their new business center about to open up here in Phoenix.

I work at Starbucks.  Great job actually, and a hell of a lot of fun.  Getting ready to apply for either Phoenix Fire or Police (getting on with the FD in this valley is like trying out for the Olympic team.  Thousands of people competing for like 100 jobs).  Fighting fire is the most fun experience I think I've ever had, but I'm still torn.

SWAT would be a cool assignment, but don't become a cop just for that.  You'll still have to be working the streets for several years before you can try out with any real chance of getting in to the team.  If you're gonna join the police, join to be a beat cop and know you'd be satisfied with that.  You have to do well there to get to anywhere else.

Corrections is always hiring...  My boss for refereeing works in corrections, they have more jobs to fill than they have filled! lol.  Maybe take a look at that to start your LE career.

Seeing as I have no career right now, but direct topical experience to the above : I almost considered DoC but everyone in both local and Federal law enforcement said it's a job, not a career, and won't help you start the process with any agency. That and it sucks.

My boss is a Deputy Warden... I think he's managed to make a career out of it.  He's also had a few guys go through to become pretty high ranking Phoenix, Scottsdale, and other local city as well as out of state officers.  I work with a few guys who are in local PD's as well, and both started their careers with DOC, and they're pretty well off right now.

I'm the Backup Systems Administrator for a USAF unit stationed at Davis-Monthan AFB. As a DoD Contractor, I'm still a civilian employee but not under the Federal Civil Service system.

What I do is maintain the data integrity of several servers and manage the unit's Continuance of Operation Plan.

Although a college degree isn't necessary for what I do (I don't have one - yet!), I cannot stress how important continuing your education will be for your future. Pretty much any reasonably paying job is going to require either that sheepskin or a stint in "Uncle Sam's Training Academy".

Yea that's why I'm hessitant to join the police. It's 3 years of street work before you can transfer and even then you have to pass the tests and be selected. And I don't really care for other people's drama that much, if it's not my business it's not my business. I don't care nor want anything to do with it. What can I say i'm not nosey. Corrections is in the same boat.

I go to college, ASU West, and I have to declare. So i'm just looking for other people's careers choices. Cause in reality those fancy degrees get you no where. They just want you to have a degree, even though u don't use it.

Most of you know I'm in law.  I am finishing law school through an online program and have been admitted as a student in California meaning I can legally practice in California Courts with supervision by my sponser - sort of like med students doing their 1 year internship after med school.  I have been practicing social security law as a paralegal for a very long time and will continue to do so, adding immigration and a few other areas after I pass the bar.  I'll be here in Arizona mostly with a small office in San Diego we are already building up.  I'm pretty much already a partner in the firm I am clerking at here in Scottsdale so I'm not looking for a job anymore.  Law is pretty decent because once you get your license you can make a lot more than most 2000 hours (full time) a year jobs in about one-third of the time spent.  That equals lifestyle as long as you don't get caught up with flashy financed cars and houses.... but thats another story....

True - to an extent.

Really what a degree proves to an employer is not only that you have a certain level of intellegence and experience, but also that you have the ability to finish something that you start.

My sister is a teacher in Glendale (HS English), my grandmother taught English and Mathematics at ASDB.
