UPDATE:

Well Gents, and Marines it seems I will be going in as my secondary choice MOS field, Infantry, this is because most of the other fields do not re-open until October. Since I am already a good two months in by the time they re-open, the good news is that I can still have a good chance of going into 0313 and be a LAV crewman, but due to my average swimming skills I may not get the Class III qualification required if I dont practice. Even if I dont get the 0313 MOS I will still be happy with a 0311 if I can pass bootcamp.

Swim 3 is not that hard. Give me a few days I'll get up with my guy who is an instructor and see what the requirements are.

okay marines, I have another question.

If a recruit informs his DI that he is NOT an adequete swimmer, does the DI put him through swimming school before putting him through swim Qualifications? because I am a lousy swimmer.

Answer: No

If you can float you can pass 4 and 3.

3 consists of:

chest deep walk with full gear and rifle in boots
about 25m swim with same gear using a bicycle kick
40m swim after jumping from diving board pack comes off and use as flotation device

Keep in mind your pack is waterproofed. so is the gear inside.

I could take some time on a weekend in Phoenix and help you out if you would like.

When you get back to AZ and you want to improve your water-con/swimming skills, a few of us going out for USAF Combat Control and Para-Rescue have been swimming at the YMCA pool in Goodyear. You're more than welcome to come train with us. The Y only charges $5 a day for military.

Ever since coming back last week I have been practicing on my swimming. For an experiment I used one of my larger MOLLE backpacks and stuffed it with objects I believe would be packed in boot, and I am very surprised that the backpack is very difficult to submerge forcefully, it allowed me to float with no effort at all. With that experiment over I can fully say I am confident in myself on passing the required swim qualification at MCRDSD. Now it's time to practice for the Swim 3, so I just wanted to say thank you Marines, and thank you AA board members.

Deal is sealed everyone.

My ship date for MCRDSD is in a few weeks "102308" with a "UH" code Infantry contract for my enlistment. I am happy I was able to get the infantry contract, and I am determined to get that 0313 MOS. I have been practicing for the Class 3 and I can now say that I can pass the Class 3 and get the MOS I want.

Good luck!  Thanks for serving.

... as a Navy man, if things don't work out at boot camp just go Navy, boot camps relatively easy!  Might not seem as cool now, but the training you'll get is a lot more transportable to civilian life after the military.  Especially if you can qualify for Navy Nuke (sub or carrier nuke plant operator).

Boot camp can be a shock, just remember when its done you'll forget the bad stuff and remember the fun stuff.  When I went through all I thought was how much it sucked... but when I look back, I had the time of my life.

When they tell you to take off your mask and take a breath... dont do it... just hold your damn breathe as long as you can..  that is the one bad memory I still have!
