Why not just use a buttstock mag pouch?  I have one on my real AR-15 with an A2 stock.

Yeah, I have a buttstock mag pouch and a redi mag system which allows me to have 3 mags on the actual gun its self at all times, incase a speedy change is needed. Rick

I don't think there has been anything commercially available like that, but I have seen photos of prototype items like what you're talking about.

The thing I saw was like a kydex pouch (think like the Safariland open top kydex retention mag pouches) with a Weaver rail attachment on the backside.

I think the idea of having additional magazine(s) on your weapon is better suited for those that aren't able to/can't carry gear or additional magazines on their person, like Police officers' ARs or home defense guns.

If I was going to put a mag on my weapon, I'd go with a stock mag pouch, probably.

Hmm. I was thinking of this because you wouldnt have to move the gun to get access to the butt stock mag pouch, slide it out, and put it in the gun. Since your hand is already up there, you just need to grab it, slide it out, and pop it in. I could see it being useful if you are up against a tree, laying down prone, trying to keep still? Raith, thats what I would do to it [place RIS rails on the back of it.

Yeah but what happens after you use that mag and you still need another one?  Best thing to do is practice your re-loading and get use to where your mags are.  When you start getting use to grabbing a mag out of your LBV you'll find it doesn't take anymore time that having one on your RIS.  You should be dropping your inserted mag at the same time you're retreiving your fresh one.  Now in Airsoft how many of us drop our mags, I for one don't, they cost too much.  So you're still losing time by grabbing the empty mag to put it in your drop pouch or LBV and then going to your RIS for the fresh one.  You've just made extra moves instead of taking the hand that just dumped the empty mag into one pouch and reaching into another pouch for the fresh mag.  Think about it.

Also, if you put some loops (http://www.pbase.com/image/18432865/original) or Magpuls on your mags, you can just loop it through one of your fingers where it can stay until you have time to do something with it.  You can also have fresh mags ready this way.

Matt is that para cord or shoelaces you used?  Para cord seems too thick to do that with, but I like the idea of not having to wrap duct tape around the mag to hold them on.

Paracord.  Remove the guts first if its too thick.

Ah, thanks for the tip.

John, those 5 mags I sold you had Paracord mag pulls done like that.

Anyone here ever use a Ready-Mag system?  While many airsofters that do have them usually use them to hold a battery I use mine for what its meant for - holding a spare mag.  It makes mag changes super fast.  If I am in a hurry I usually loop the empty around a finger until I have a better chance to stow it away and re-load the Ready-Mag.  I think its waaay coool man!

While I have spent a small nations fortune on standard mags, those thrifty airsofters that use primarily hi-caps would find this a nice accessory to have on their M4/m16 replicas.

I personaly use mag-pulls and I am pretty happy with them. Renegade Recon has a do it yourself system where you put a flex/riot cuff into the gutted para cord, neat idea.

Or you could just put a QD rail attachment to you mag and put it on that way.[;)]

Smart. How easy is it to release something like that?

Exactly.... I would just stick with the ready mag system.

I have a redi mag on my gun, but I only use it if a speedy mag change is needed. (the mag needs a tug to fall free, so if I do use it, the mag that is in the gun falls free and then I pull the fresh one out and over).  If the situation doesnt require a fast mag change I leave the fresh mag in the redi mag and just get one from my vest.  The mag that I have on my buttstock is my "last resort" mag. (it also helps to balance out the tac light, battery, and red dot on the RIS of my SR-16)  I have the paracord mag pulls on all of my mag secured with 100mph tape, they work really well when trying to get them out of your LBV or small arms pouch (the US issue 3 mag holder that goes on your belt).  The TM/CA/G&P mags are all thicker than real M16 mags, so its a tight fit, and the mag pull helps get them out alot quicker. Rick

*Edited cause I called a redi mag a mag pull on accident*

I saw that Mikey, I like the stiffer loops though so I'm figuring out a way to cut the inner cord short and just tuck the thinner ends under the floor plate so the loops don't flop around.

You could also insert somethig into that exposed loop to keep it rigid, John.  CAG D used a section of zip-tie once, and it worked well, but I tried larger gauge wire, and it worked good also.  Another thing I was thinking about, but haven't tried yet, is a section os telephone cord (non-coiled).  It's rectangular/oval in cross-section, and would work well while still maintingg a bit of flexibility.  Give it a try!
Title: Magazine Slots for RIS
Post by: HavHav on May 06, 2004, 01:58:22 PM
I don't know if this has been done or what, but I had an idea during art this morning of designing a magazine pouch that could attach to an RIS. That would make it possible if you were in an intense fire fight you wouldn't have to reach for your LBV, or if you were prone and had to stay still, you would just need to slide your hand to the pouch mounted to the RIS, and slide out the magazine. I was thinking of a push-pull type release system?
