The gun shows are by far the best place to purchase to be able to handle the gun you want to buy.  There are some great deals to be had, but on the other hand, you have to watch out because there are plenty of wolves in sheep's clothing trying to take advantage of people.  I can't tell you how many stories I have heard of dealers selling a "rare Romanian AK-47" for $600 to unwitting buyers.

That being said, if you're the do-it-yourself type, you can buy a complete AR15 upper and build the lower yourself and save $100 easy.  It's actually very easy to do.  I think Victor3 is in the process of acquiring/building his first AR15 that way.  I have a preban M4A3 upper that I am willing to sell (it's brand new and complete - headspaced and all) if you decide to go that route.  I do have a lower parts kit I can sell as well.

Paco it's about time you got a good avatar up!

The hardest single item to buy is going to be your lower receiver.  Deciding on which brand you want.  I've owned Colt's, Bushmasters, Olympic Arms, DPMS, and cough choke gag... American Spirit Arms.  Make sure the lower is a Forged unit and not just cast.  Then be sure the barrel is Chrome lined.  There are some vendors selling new M4 profile barrels that are not chrome lined.  The chrome lining helps with cleaning and corrosion prevention.  Like Paco said, you can buy a whole kit minus the lower receiver for around $450 to $500, then just buy the lower receiver... a couple hours of work and you've got an AR15.

Yep Rock River Arms, Armalite, there's so many nowadays.

Victor3 just bought an Eagle Arms forged lower at the gun show for $115 plus tax.  You should ask him what he thinks about it.  You don't live to far from him either, maybe he can let you look it over, I know he's got the guys business card too.

I have built lowers from RRA, DPMS and Eagle Arms (ArmaLite).  I think the RRA ones are the best quality of the bunch (fit and finish).  Ed picked up his stripped EA lower from (ironically) American Spirit Arms IIRC @ the gun show.

Check out www.gunsamerica.com Its an online classifieds place, so u have to pay like $20 or so to get a FFL dealer to get the gun for you, and pick it up from there, which isnt bad. Rick

For a decent quality built one, you're looking at ~$750.  You can get them for $550-600 (Hesse and Olympic Arms), but I wouldn't fire one of those if you paid me to...

Hehehe. Count me in on that as well. [^]

Depending on maker, prices range from around $8-900 (Bushy) to those Hesse's. Avoid the cheapies like the plauge. Glocks aren't the only things that go boom.

Head over to AR15.com and browse around there for a while. I used to frequent that site, but have sinces moved to RimFireCentral.com for most of my fun. But the AR forums are invaluable in regards to the AR itself. The guys who've already put their opinion in are on the ball. Build your own lower and you'll not only save, but have a better knowledge of the gun right from the start.

If you are REAL good with exploded views and handtools, you COULD build your own upper as well. But that would require you to get a set of headspacing guages and learn how to use them, amongst other things. I may go that route once my SWAT friend takes the armorer's course on the AR so he can help me out.

Shifty,

I agree the AK is more durable, but with the ability to switch out tops for the AR and shoot most any popular caliber, I think I'll stick with the AR. :D

Basher, its all about personal preference. We don't need to get into the AR vs. AK debate here again...that one can go on forever.

Wont the prices of AR-15 rifles (and all assualt-type rifles) drop greatly when the assualt weapons ban expires in September? From what I understand, as soon as the ban expires, there will be no such thing as pre ban and post ban weapons, therefore driving down prices (the pre-ban rifles, which used to be worth much more, wont be).  Is this correct? If so, I am going to hold out purchasing a rifle (most likely a bushmaster) untill the. Rick
