Mirage Technologies!
« on: July 22, 2005, 09:53:30 AM »
These guys are in Florida.  Raith showed it to me awhile back when shopping for new glass.

They have the absolute best prices on many items.  I just picked up an EOTech 552 (AA batteries, Night Vision compatible) and 1,000 rounds of M855 62 Grain "Green Tips" for 528.99 SHIPPED!

Before you buy optics, ammo, boots, or camelbak stuff, check them out!

Oh I hope, I hope that you did NOT buy the XM855PD crap!  That stuff has been shown to be downright DANGEROUS for the shooter who is unaware of what was purchased.  The Lake City "PD" designated ammo is "Grade 3" factory ammo and you will need to hand inspect EVERY round before you shoot it.  Grade 1 ammo is what LC gives to the military and Grade 2 ammo is the stuff for civilians.  Ammo that has more serious problems, such as severe dents, bent rounds, split necks, and so on, is "Grade 3" (or worse). Federal is selling this as XM193PD and XM855PD, and packs it loose in 500 or 1000 round boxes. (For those who haven't been around long, loose-packed ammo is almost always Grade 3 or lower quality, no matter who you buy it from. If it was higher quality, it would have been boxed up and sold at full price!)

It is important to understand that batches of Grade 2 ammo may be made up of a mix of Grade 1 and Grade 2, and that Grade 3 ammo may have both Grade 1 and Grade 2 ammo mixed in. The grade is given based on the worst ammo in the lot.

If you did purchase "PD" ammo, make sure you hand-sort it ALL of it first, and cull out any bad rounds. Also, be prepared for a squib load or any other unusual behavior, and make sure you know what to do when and if something occurs.

Finally, do NOT use the PD ammo for anything "important", and especially not for duty or defensive use. This is bargain ammo that will give performance and reliability in proportion to its selling price.

Roger that Jason.  This is just for burning rounds off at the range, though

For "important" work, I plan on using something a bit more reliable.

That said, I really appreciate the heads-up!

XM-193, Winchester White box, and Wolf 55gr.(the new polymer cased stuff is just fine to shoot) is all I shoot.  The wolf looks to be no dirtier then the xm-193s after 500rds, and for almost half the price why not.

Don't use the Federal American Eagle stuff, even though it is made by federal it is NOT xm-193, i have had more FTE with those then any other round.

"Friends don't let friends shoot Wolf"

Just messin', but that was a saying we used at the range quite often.

Christian, thanks for the link. Great site.

The old wolf HELL NO, but new new polymer cased stuff has no problems, and extensive tests have shown it not to be that bad.  I will agree, i was quite leery at first too from all i had heard...but after a few hundred rounds i don't have any regrets.  I still buy the LC stuff, but in lesser quanitites.

Don't want to hijack this thread any more

And thanks for the site Christian, ill have to look to them with my next order.

I pretty much just run wolf in my AK. Great stuff.
I would never dream of putting it in any other gun, though.

That is a very cool site, Christian. Thanks.

Just finished up that ammo yesterday at Ben Avery.  All 1,000 rounds fired, with not ONE problem!  There was a dented casing, but that was an accident Mikey had with the LULA, the round did not come that way.

Very good ammo for the money.  Great for the range, and cheaper, cleaner, and heavier grain than Wolf.

I will be buying another case of this "XM855PD crap" again vey soon.

Sounds like you got lucky with the scoop of ammo you got.  Some others (see some threads on it at AR15.com) weren't so lucky - inlcuding a kaboomed AR due to the XM193PD ammo.

I usually buy the boxed LC XM193 ammo, but if given the choice between the XM193PD, XM855PD or Wolf, I'd go with Wolf every time without even thinking about it.

BTW, you can get Wolf in 62gr...  AFAIK, that's the most common weight of Wolf in .223. 8)

Ok so what about this Winchester "Target" ammo thats beein hitting the market in the last year or two.  Its been loose packed in 100 rnd boxes and I havent had any problems or indications it wasnt good ammo?

These are the 100 rnd value packs vs the 50 rnd regular target ammo by Winchester.

Sorry I dont mean to change the subject.

Is that the same as the "WWB" ammo?  eg, the Winchester White Box that is commonly sold at Wal Mart?  If so, the general consensus has been that that is good ammo for plinking and punching holes in paper at the range.  I run that through all my handguns.

Yeah thats the same stuff.  I was just curious the way you said "all loose packed ammo" as I have been using this for a while now with no problems.

Thanks

I used to have a russian 9x18 Makarov, not the most common ammo, so I'd buy whatever I could find for the best price.  Turns out wolf was the best price, but there was a reason for it.

The makarov was the most reliable gun I had ever seen, this thing would *never* jam, no matter what you did to it, its a lot like an AK.

The Wolf 9x18 ammo jammed the gun every 20-30 rounds...

it wasn't worth the buck or so a box I'd save.
