Yeah, I can see ACU working in dry, dusty, arid locations.  But will they being using the same uniform in woodland areas?  They sort of look like fancy PJ's to me.

Cool, I'm not the only one who thinks they look like pajamas.  But yeah man, I think this is exactly what the army is going to be using in woodland areas, and desert, and urban...it's supposed to be 'universal' camo, after all.

Is the army now using Mk 14s on a regular basis?  I've not seen any form of the M14 used by American infantry (not special forces) since...well, Vietnam.

Well, AFAIK, far far outside of my lane, on another turnpike, they're being reissued en-masse to fill designated marksmen roles since the .308 round is superior for penetration and a flat trajectory.

Vince is correct, they've got their "squad designated marksman" role to fill...Not an official sniper, they follow along for normal combat duty, but are expected to make well aimed meaningful shots.

Russians have had that as part of their infantry doctrine forever, seems to make a ton of sense.

Firehead may have more info on how they work it for Bluefor since he just came back from infantry training?

Crazy Horse M14, basically an 18" barrel, among other things.

Many soldiers are wanting to use the .308 size rifles due to the greater stopping power. The .223 round was designed for one superpower to shoot at another superpower. With the understanding that wounding would tie up the abilities of one or two others to extract and that wound was more humane than killing. However, when fighting a third world force with religous overtones just means that they give the wounded guy a grenade and leave him. The .308 aids in the ability to limit that scenario. The physchological impact of the sound of an M60 over an M249 is also something to consider.

PersonalyIMHO, I always felt that the M249 was a mistake. Four eyes, two sights and two M4s can lay down more firepower than one M249. But no amount of M4s or M249s can match the power and sound of an M60. I know I was a M60 door gunner. The sound of a Huey and a M60 always got the troops excited. (even if they were just blanks :)

ACU rocks!  I wish we were issued them.  They work very well in woods and desert.
