Are silent piston heads really worth it?
« on: March 31, 2005, 09:31:46 PM »
Quick question, are silent piston heads really worth it? Please post if you have one/have experience with one. Also, please post what you think are the best brands, any help is appreciated. Oh, I have a TM SR-16 with a Hurricane aluminum piston, a Hurricane cylinder, a 120 spring, and metal bushings. Oh, and a Hurricane piston head.

The systema piston set is installed on my M4.

Yes, it's worth the money.  Rather than quieting the AEG, it produces less shock on the mechbox, therefore lengthening it's life.  It's a bit quieter yes, but the added durability is what made me buy one.

I had one in my PGC setup in my SAW when I had it.  While there is nothing that can break that PGC gearbox, I did notice an increase in FPS with the silent piston head over a flat piston head.  It was about 10-15 fps higher with it.  And I should know as I had that damn thing apart about a million times trying to get it to work right.

I would imagine that velocity increase is due to the tapered cylinder head.  The air is compressed a bit before entering the nozzle.

Your thoughts, Mikey?

That was exactly what I think.  That little bit of extra air to push out makes a difference.

Yep, silent piston head set is well worh the money.  You get an increase in velocity as well as less pounding on the forward end of the gear box which means less chance of braking the gear box too.
