I'm kind of split on the issue myself.

first, l like to not pay a lot for gas, (by the way i drive a 91 corsica, it's a piece of crap).  I usually spend ~$30 bucks, which isn't that much by today's standards.  However, i definatly know what it's like to be the little car and have an SUV "tee off" on you.  My mom and I were rear ended by an H2, we were stopped at a stop light and it plowed into us at ~30 mph.  We were in a passat and the back is absolutely totaled, and the passat isn't even a compact car by any means.  I personally hate the idea of a smart car in the united states, but that's up for the market to decide.  I personally think that the car is horribly impractical.  It's very small, you can't take stuff with you, and it's well...a tonka toy if you compare it to the driving done in the states.

for city streets, its well designed, but on the highway, not so much.  I think that a lot of the compact hybrids that we see today are only good at saving gas and nothing else.

Cars have been living in a world of extremes.  You either get a tank or a matchbox toy and the "urban SUV' rears its ugly head.

I agree with you on it being a split issue....what gets me the most is how expensive cars in general have become. I guess that's just about everything though.

H2 vs. Passat...that couldn't have been much fun. Years ago I was in a Jeep Cherokee on the George Washington Bridge going from NJ to NYC I got rear-ended by an 18 wheeler. Felt like a grizzly bear trying to pop my cherry.

Yes, build materials obviously matter.  However in the case of a collision size does matter as well due to the simple fact that the bigger the vehicle the more space  you have (front and back) until you actually hit the driver and you usually end up with a much better angle of impact.  For the driver of the SUV anyways.

Plus smaller cars are usually made out of weaker materials as well for the sake of weight.  The Smart is actually one of the few exceptions to this with it's hardened cage.  However, there is a reason that those overseas companies have trouble getting their smaller cars (IE: Smart, Lotus Elise/Exige, Arial Atom, etc) imported to the US.  They don't meet safety standards.

Lastly, you don't have to get that small of a car to save gas money.  It's called a hybrid.  Lexus even makes a hybrid SUV (rx330h) that actually produces more power than the standard version. Plus, even the Prius is a larger vehicle than the car in these pics.

Actually the Ariel atom isnt an import, a company in the US bought the rights to produce them here.

And in a lot of ways with the full cage and the 5point harness a lot of high performance cars like this are safer than your normal car.

This is true, I guess import wasn't really the term I was looking for in their case.  The point I was making was the EU version didn't meet US safety standards and changes had to be made to the US version.

Volkswagen group isn't just VW (for those that do not know..) it is also Audi, SEAT, Å koda, Bentley, Lamborghini, and Bugatti. Skoda and SEAT are well known for their tiny cars, which mostly crawl around the streets of London, Ensenada, and Berlin and such cities.

In order to diversify the company, they created modles that resembled other makes. The Jetta/Passat/Phaeton to Audi A4/A6/A8 is obvious. But the Euro modles like the Fox, and the Polo, modled after the Skoda and SEAT  vehicles, but kept the VW name so people were more comfortable with them (for whatever weird marketing reason). they even dappled in the world of trucks, and made the "diesel" whish was an old ford ranger basically, then Minivans, with the Touran, and SUV with the Toaureg, all of which were geared for a specific use in specific places.

My point to all this is that the Fox isn't any crappier then its Skoda counterparts, and like what was already said, when these tiny cars are out of where they're supposed to be, bad things can happen.

just my $.30 :)

Does anyone know any details about the accident?  I'm willing to bet that the driver of the car was doing something stupid...

Why? It's entirely possible that the driver of the truck fell asleep at the wheel.

The driver of the car must have been asleep too, to miss a truck coming head on.

The crossfox which is pictured was made for the south american market, even more amazing is that it is a 4 door. I think the accident occured while the driver was doing something stupid like they do in most third world hell holes, passing when he shouldnt have and lost control. I almost shit my pants a few times while riding in taxis in kenya.

That is a disturbing picture.

I'd drive one of those cars.  They look a lot like some of the vehicles from Mexico city.

Because the car seems to have been driving on the wrong side of the road.
