General Airsoft Discussion / To Paint or Not To Paint
« on: June 07, 2011, 09:48:38 AM »
So I usually hate guns with painted camo.  Yes, I know it's more realistic, and yes, I know it's probably more combat effective...
But I hate the way they look!  If I were to paint my guns, I paint them 2-tone (like my M4 Noveske).  But I have never painted a gun with any type of camo, nor would I ever buy one.

... or so I thought.

This is a UTG L96 I got for pretty cheap.  Came with the scope, and I had upgrade parts I could easily drop in.  The only problem is that it came with this tiger stripe camo.  Don't get me wrong, this is one of the prettier camo paintjobs I've seen...  But I still don't like it.  Out of the 12 guns I own, this is the only one with a camo paintjob.

So I decided I wanted to repaint it.  I took it apart, separated the pieces that were going to be tan, separated the pieces that were going to be black...
... and had a change of heart.  The guy who painted this put in a lot of effort (or so he says) into coating this gun, and I kinda don't want to see a piece of art destroyed.

So what do you guys think?  Repaint it or leave it be?

Troubleshooting / APS2 Hop Up not feeding
« on: May 23, 2011, 05:32:42 PM »
So my UTG L96 is equipped with an APS2 hop up.  Everything fits together nicely, and it fires.

...80% of the time.  The other 20%, a BB seems to jam itself right under the hole of the barrel, locking itself in place between the wall of the hop up chamber and the head of the cylinder, as shown here:

I have to take the mag out and poke the BB with my finger to get it to seat correctly:

I have tried different brand BBs and different mags.  What could I do to fix this problem?  I have access to a mill, so cutting the aluminum hop up is no problem.  Could I perhaps make the chamber hole into the barrel slightly bigger and ramped?

General Airsoft Discussion / I guess it's my own damn fault
« on: April 22, 2011, 08:47:03 PM »
Well I just had a shit trade go through... kinda.

The trade actually took place a month ago.  The seller was in Phoenix, and I was in Tucson.  Because I was not able to pick up the parts myself, I went ahead and told my sister to go buy the parts.  Aforementioned parts should have been the externals for the ASR (everything minus the bolt assembly, hop up unit, and inner barrel).  I'm finally able to get back to Phoenix today and I find the complete upper receiver (outer barrel, basically) missing.  I call up the guy and ask him if he has the outer barrel, he responded yes.  I told him I thought the part was included for the price I paid, but he said he thought I said I didn't need the barrel.  I corrected him saying I didn't need the inner barrel, and asked how much he would sell the outer barrel for (I offered payment of $5.00...)

He goes to say he believes he can get more for a simple outer barrel assembly, and told me if I upped the price he would be willing to sell.  I told him no thanks and hung up.  What bogus.  Now I'm out some cash and have a completely useless part.

Moral of the story: make sure you're there in person for the sale.  Else, you'll never be sure what you'll end up with.

General Off-Topic Discussion / Crono's Brainiac Contest! Question 2
« on: April 07, 2011, 08:39:48 PM »
After question 1 was solved in 1 day (see here: viewtopic.php?f=23&t=30110) by Schwer_Punkt_91, I thought I'd up the difficulty slightly.  I will wait until the 16th to post the solution.

Difficulty: 6/10

PHYSICS / MECHANICAL ENGINEERING / CHEMICAL ENGINEERING: Transport Phenomena, Thermal Heat Transfer
--------------------------------------------------------------
A step in the manufacture of metallic spherical ball bearings (made of stainless steel 316, density of 8028 kg/m^3) includes thermal treatment, in which
the spheres are heated to a uniform temperature of 843°C in a furnace. The ball bearings that come out
of the furnace are placed on a conveyor belt for transport to an oil bath. The spheres remain 3 minutes
on the conveyor belt where they cool by natural convection (h=1 W/m^2 K) by contact with air at 35°C.
After that, they are dropped into a perfectly mixed oil bath in which the oil is kept at a constant
temperature of 25°C. The motion of the oil in the bath is fast enough to consider that heat transfer by
convection from the spheres to the oil is very fast (assume h = infinity). The spheres remain (briefly) in the bath until the
temperature at their center reaches 28°C. Determine the time that the spheres must remain in the oil
bath. The diameter of the spheres is 2 cm. Other information about the spheres: Cp=503 J/kg K, k=16 W/m K

First person to post the correct time gets the prize.

So I was thinking of posting a question from one of my homework assignments to help exercise the brains of this community every so often (probably as soon as someone solves the question).  The first person to successfully post the answer gets a mystery prize (and it'll be something tangible, not internet cookies).  Most of my questions will be chemical engineering related, but not always.  The winner will be announced, as well as the prize, as soon as I receive the correct answer.  Serious contestants only.  Do note you will also be competing against members at TucsonAirsoftCoalition.

So let's start off:

Difficulty: 1/10

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING: Chemical Equilibrium
--------------------------------------------------------------
For the following gas phase reaction in equilibrium at 500 K, it is found that A is 10% dissociated at 10 atm pressure:

A(g) = B(g) + C(g)

Where A, B, and C are all vapors.  Assume ideal gas behavior and calculate the percent dissociation of A at 440.6 degrees F and 760 torr.

I want one.  Is that just a regular bipod hooked to the top?  Can somebody send me a link to purchase?  I've gone to a lot of places but couldn't find it.
