Concealed Carry
« on: April 11, 2010, 11:02:27 PM »
So... the new law has passed the state's house and senate.

The law basically states that for general concealed carry, a permit will no longer be required. Applies to the previous permit-applicable citizens (over 21, not a felon etc...) for most situations. A permit would still be required to carry in Restaurants that serve alcohol or to carry in other states that honor our CCW.

Any thoughts on the subject?

I have a CCW permit. This law fixes a number of things wrong with the old way they did things. Like if I carried in my car and my wife was with me, if I got pulled over she could be charged with not having a permit because she was in proximity of the weapon.

I was starting to loose faith in the conservativeness of this state, I am glad to see this go through.

I second this statement.

It's a good idea to get a CCW anyway.  The training and permit would make for less headaches down the road in case anything ever happens... which it probably will...

Training?

While they do give you some useful information and facts, I think calling it training is a bit of a stretch.  It's not like having a CCW is proof you actually know how to properly use and handle a firearm.  I know people without CCW's who I consider exceptionally well trained on firearm safety and who are pretty decent shots.  I also know people WITH CCW's who I'm uncomfortable standing next to at the range.

Well, maybe Education is a better term to use.  I meant it in the sense that it's good to be educated on it.

Personally I think that this is a good idea, though to be honest I really don't think it matters. Those that would carry legally would pursue the CCW permit, those that will carry legally or otherwise would just ignore the fact that a permit is required.

What I would like to see is dropping the CCW age to 18 for those of us who serve our country. There is no reason I should be able to carry a gun while serving and not while I am at home.

Well, you can carry openly at 18. Do you generally carry concealed while you are serving?

I think it will make a difference, maybe not a huge one.
I still plan to get a CCW, so that I don't have to remove the weapon when entering any restaurants that serve alcohol... which is pretty much anything but like mcdonald's these days.

Concealed carry no, but I do carry. To be honest it isn't that I carry a concealed gun at work, it is that I think that by being in the military I prove that I am mature enough to be trusted with a CCW. I have safety issues with open carry, both from people who would do me harm (it makes you a target) and from police who do not know the laws.

nothing against the military as i was infantry for 8 years but just cause one is in the military doesnt mean they should have the right to CCW. I have many PVT and even SGT under men and that i worked with that i didnt trust with their assigned weapons let alone down town with a pitol under their jacket. I still think you should have to be trained to carry a concealed weapon or even a weapon. some sort of training should be done so that you dont shoot some one innocent with an accidental discharge, i dont care if you shoot yourself cause you are stupid.

I think you should still get training before packing. I.e. Appropriate use. Etc.

Precisely.  That is my biggest complaint about the law.

Everyone that carries a gun, concealed or not, should be aware of the AZ gun laws, especially the laws regarding when it's okay to shoot someone, and when it's not.  Consider it like going on patrol, but not receiving an ROE brief before leaving the wire.

What we, as gun owners, have with this new law is a lengthy piece of rope.  Hopefully we don't hang ourselves with it so the liberals can say "I told you so."
