Magazine disassembly
« on: June 19, 2010, 06:43:00 PM »
I know chris is gonna think I'm a moron for not asking him this question before buying his mags (but I'm human, so forgive me).

How would one take apart some Star magazines? They seem to be one piece, all plastic, and I've yet to find anywhere that explains how to disassemble these suckers. Some have minor jams that are easily to work around by hitting the mags. But in case I need to strip them down after a desert game to clean them, I gotta know how to clean them (as lube is only a temporary fix that makes it all worse in time). Yes, I tried the funky screw at the bottom, and it seems that they do nothing, or something I can't put my finger on. I'll post pictures if anyone needs them for reference, just having issues with lighting/focus right now.

They are glued or heat fused together. Best way to clean them is flushing the system through the feed port with either air or water (drying them immediately), and lubing them up with silicone.

Thanks for the tip. Sounds like I just saved myself a magazine! Haha. I will try that for sure.

A hammer is the best way to open them. But there is a small cover you can twist half a turn in either direction to release the spring and follower inside. It's pretty easy. Same with MAG mags and King Arms

So that's what it does.... meaning you can pop the cover off to remove the spring and follower or it just releases them through the top port where BBs enter and exit?

The spring and follower will come out the bottom of the mag. It's smart to not have any bbs in the mag when you do this. However if there is a jam, like the follower gets stuck half way up the mag you can still take the cap out but the spring will be under a lot more pressure, so point it away from your face. ;) Under normal circumstances when you feed the spring and follower into the mag there should be 2"-4" sticking out when the follower is seated at the top of the mag.

Hmmm... now the only thing that's holding me back is the stupid question: "How the f*** do I get that damned cover off?" I've been messin with it ever since I got the mags, but it seems like it just wants to break on me each time I try to pry it out. Maybe cause I'm using my pocket knife? Either way, thanks man!

Try using a flathead screwdriver. Not to small though. Use one that is as big as the slot in the bottom or maybe just a bit smaller. Some companies, like King Arms, glue the caps on. They are not threaded so you can go either way with them. However you may want to twist back and forth to try and break the glue/loc-tite lose. You may hear a little cracking but it should be ok. Don't torque to hard but with a little patience the cap should come off.

Sounds good. I backed off whenever I was trying that because I heard the sound of cracking plastic. I just didn't want to be out a few mags. Guess it's time to try again ;)
