Title: multiday airsoft game
Post by: rileyjohnson22 on May 14, 2014, 07:59:46 PM
Hey guys, I had and idea after reading another thread on here and I wanted to get you guys' opinion on this. Has anyone here ever hosted, or even been part of, a multiple day game where it wasn't separate games; set up base somewhere, attack, defend, patrol, etc. For a lengthy period of time. I think it would be a fun and realistic experience. Put rules into place for realism like stuff to force operators to budget ammo. Anyways,  that's the jist of it, what're your thoughts?

The idea is a great idea and I have played at one of these types of games and it was fun.  If I remember right, it was hosted by Combat Challenge.  I think they are a team out of Prescott and are a real good bunch of guys.  They hosted a game called Red Dagger and it was repeated the following year.  Some issues you might run into are:
1.  batteries and charging stations.  unless you have multiple batteries, people run out of power really quick and so you would need to have charging stations.
2. location.  finding a place.  Some spots are up in Strawberry, Mount Ord, or similar locations must allow camping as well as airsoft playing.
3.  players.  Sadly, many players are weekend warriors who love the idea of playing for a morning or afternoon but convincing them to play a night game, camp out and then play all day can be intimidating for some.
4.  making it free.  when you host a game and charge, people expect more and what prizes.  If you make it free, then it takes that stress off of you and makes it more enjoyable for the hosts as well as the gamers.  Plus, we all love free games.
I say go for it!  Try to organize it and I would love to come.  :-)

My team and I have been wanting to do something like this for a while, something along the lines of East Wind, but not that grand a scale, I'm thinking Friday to Sunday.  I agree with SG-1 (Teal'c says hi!) when he references players.  This event would be pretty niche and would not appeal to all players.  We were thinking that it would take two teams to run it and depending on the amount of players there would almost always be something going on.  Each team would camp at a different spot, roughly half a mile apart or something like that.  Anyways, we would be there if something like that was planned.  And if we come up with one we will be sure to post it.

4.  making it free.
Not to mention if you're using public property you can't really charge them to play anyway...

You will need safe zones. If it's multiple days, people will eventually need sleep. How night games can be fun, and are obviously part of this. You can't expect everybody to sleep with their goggles on, or even expect the goggles to say on all night. Keeping this and charging stations in mind, my suggestion is actually quite pricey.

If you create a barracks for both teams, and a no shooting zone, then you have a safe spot. But once you incorporate the battery issue you can either make people bring enough batteries. If it's only a weekend long game then it really isn't going to be that hard, and make them find their own means to charging (Car chargers/generators) or you include generators, and the gas to run them. With this being said as well you'll also need to remember to have fire extinguishers. Most people run LiPo batteries nowadays, and there's the popular saying with those 'it's not if they'll blow up, but when' Having a 2 or 3 cell lipo blow up in a forest is very bad stuff, and if we have generators, gasoline, a handful of other lipos and there's probably gonna be more flammable shit like propane. You have a recipe for disaster.

I know it's the whole Safety Sam speech that nobody wants to hear. But I would hate for people to overlook these things.

well this might disqualify me from my own idea, but I am 15 and have very few resources available to me as far as location, gear, teammates, etc. So do you think i can honestly get this organized in a manner that would be enjoyable for everyone? Hell this  might even prove that minors can be a effective part of major Airsoft event. But anyways, since I have minimal perks of being  a organizer, would any of you bigger names in the world be willing to help me organize all these Airsoft goodies?

Birdman speaks the truth! You're talking about a huge undertaking that has the potential to become a logistics nightmare of an epic magnitude. I would go informal (i.e. non-milsim, non- continuous storyline).

The best "informal" multiday games that have been staged of recent memory would have to be the Crossfire campouts. Read back on those threads, check out YouTube videos from those events, ect. and get inspired for your event.

As an aside, remember that we're going into summer. 110+ is not fun to play in. I would recommend postponing any game in the desert til at least September or you're going to have a very small turnout. If you want to have it over your summer break or whatever you damn kids are calling it these days, I would recommend going up north to at least Prescott, if not further north.

You can charge for "public land" games easily. That is a fallacious argument. You need to have a land use permit for large events anyways, and as such you'd have the right to a given piece of land for the time you had a permit for.

There is a decent amount of interest, but honestly, it'd have to be hosted by someone reputable and known and who has done ops many times before who understands logistics a fair bit.

JUST SAW THIS POST TODAY (10-5-15) LOOKS LIKE YOU GUYS HAVE A PROBLEM LOOKING FOR A LOCATION. ME AND MY TEAM HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR IDEAS TO PLAY BECAUSE WE RECENTLY BOUGHT 40 ACRES OF LAND UP NORTH AND WE THINKING ABOUT MAKING A LONG MULTIDAY EVENT. BUT WE HAVE NEVER HOSTED AN EVENT AND STARTED PLAYING AIRSOFT ABOUT A YEAR AGO AND OUR ONLY EVENT HAS BEEN THE CROSSFIRE CAMPOUTS. ALSO WE ARE WORKING ON GETTING SOLAR PANELS OUT THERE TO HAVE A CHARGING STATIONS.

Despite the fact that this is a Necro Post I've been waiting for someone to finally do these in Arizona, I never really felt like driving 2 hours or so for a 6 hour game and back was worth it. I'm 16 and I've been to a few 3-4 day ops in Utah and Alaska and it was some of the coolest things I've experienced. Granted they had all the logistics and funding figured out but there is definitely an interest or so I think.

Well the land looks great lots of potential also we just need to save up a little bit more money to buy some material. Guys updated to see when we can have a simple campout game like crossfire.

There is a s**t ton of sand piles and I believe bags as well to help prepare for the monsoon season floating around my neighborhood streets. I'm sure if you asked some people around where you live they might have some. I could even attempt to bring some up to SASCO if this is actually going to happen, also awhile back I heard MSW was a possibly here but no-one really took any more action to follow up sadly.

Could you post a google maps image of your piece of land with an outline? I'd like to see the type of terrain.

I'm pretty sure if you find the location on Google maps or Google Earth you can double click it and it will mark it with a pin and you can see the coordinates on a side bar, If I find them I'll post them up.

EDIT: Freaking tits you found out how to get the corrdinates right after I wrote that whole paragraph about it. Anyways is it possible for a Humvee to access in the AO the satellite map of your area is trash and hard to tell wothers 2D. If there is an multi-day OP upcoming here in March my buddy has a AM General Humvee from the 1990s we have been working on outfitting with plexi-glass windows and a few guns. I feel it would be nice addition in a milsim game.

There is a road that leads up there but there are a few washouts that may cause problems to lower cars. We are going to start building on it this mid-December and I'll post up pic of the road and location.
