Personally I like to do it every couple of bags of BB's.  Especially with the stock Marui gears.  Classic Army and Systema gears are more durable and can go a bit longer between cleanings.

I use regular Hoppes gun solvent on the gears and an old tooth brush. Brake cleaner on the gear box halfs to clean all the nooks and crannys.  Everything but the switch assembly will need to come out, just be sure to take the shims off and lay them out so you can remember where to put them back.

Does using such solvents have a detrimental effect on the cast zinc Mechbox and gears (if they are stock Marui), or any of the other metal parts and finishes/coatings?

Or am I looking into this too deeply? [:P]

Just don't use it on the rubber parts, but otherwise no it won't hurt the metal parts.  It can strip the finish off if left on too long though.

If that's the stuff you two used on Havinators AEG, I'm staying the HELL away from it!

Besides, I love the smell of Hoppes.

Cleaning Mechbox, How Often?
« Reply #7 on: March 30, 2004, 01:34:03 AM »
Is it a good idea to open up the mechbox and clean it once in awhile?  If so, how often and to what extent?

I want to take a good look inside my box to see what's up, and would like to clean it and re-lubricate everyhitng while I'm at it.  I was thinking of using a de-greaser on the gears, bushings, mechbox halves, etc, and re-applying the grease and silicon iside the cylinder.  Keeping sure not to dislodge anything that doesn't need it, and remembering where the shims are.

I need some guidance!
