I loved the USP .45 Tactical my buddy has and I have gotten plenty of experience to shoot with.  I got my hands on a USPc .40 S&W and that was pretty cool as well.  I personally preferred the compact because it felt more secure in my smaller hands, but the .45 was a beast.

And there's a whole different beast, the SOCOM.  Got to try that out at SGC, and man that thing is badass.  Never know if I will ever have the money to put up for that.  Hell, I am still trying to afford my own first sidearm here in AZ.  It makes it hard when a friend has a decent assortment to shoot with.

Go somewhere like Shooter's World where you can rent and shoot several different weapons and figure out what YOU like.  Then go for it.

Make sure you get your CCW - if nothing else just to exercise your right to do so.

+1,  I carry open more than I carry concealed, but I like to have the option and the protection.

for non-members its $90 for the CCW at Scottsdale Gun Club.  They also have a rather good selection of pistols to rent.  I would suggest a Tanfoglio Witness Match .45 for a full size or a Springfield .45 XD Compact for something smaller, but it still has the ability for a full grip if you want with the 13rd mags.

I have two H&K pistols- a P2000 9mm and an HK45.
I can't say enough about them, they are great guns.
some people prefer pistols with metal frames but I like the "high speed" qualities of a polymer frame  :)  its a personal preference.
HK's, like Glocks and Sigs, are made to go BANG when you pull the trigger. everytime.
its why they're primarily designed as service firearms.
people rag on them because they're expensive but to me they are literally the BMW's of the firearm world. some people just like Chevy's and some people just like Honda's so I will not bother wasting my time explaining why I like German cars and German guns.
Mk. 23's are great guns too but they are really expensive (around $1500-1700) and VERY LARGE.
if I were you depending on your budget I'd just get a used USP. those are nice guns.
and if you have a little money sitting around get the new HK45. co-designed by Larry Vickers and H&K and based on the 1911 it is said to be one of the the best .45's ever made.
I love mine and would recommend it to anyone.
