KWA mp7A1 review

KWA mp7a1: whats it based off of?
I'm not going to go into a in depth discussion about the real steel version so feel free to read up yourself!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP7A1

What’s new about mp7a1s?
The ksc and kwa mp7a1 are the first gas blow back mp7 and while other companies like tokyo marui, and Well, have faithfully replicated this amazing gun, neither come close in performance, versatility, or aesthetics.

Shoots out of box: chronoed at 375 fps, at 20 rps
40-48 round mags (I was able to fit 46 but hey that may be just me and the 6 mags I have!)
accuracy: 7/10 is how I would describe it! has a great hop up but seems to need a tweaking ever 10 mags or so! This gun is ideal for close range with its mag capacity, lower fps, and super high rof

Out of the box:
Styrofoam surrounds the gun tightly packing it in. Included is one mag, a hop up tool (must be use to adjust hop up), a tiny tube of lube, and some .2gram bbs. One full metal mag (very sturdy and holds a TON of gas!! I’m talking three reloads of the mag and single shots! Two full mags on full auto). And the beautiful gun of course!

First impressions:
Solid. The word comes snapping straight into the front of my mind as soon as I lifted it out of the foam. The thing does not wiggle an inch. The foregirp, locks down and is incredibly solid. The stock (full metal with a plastic grooved butt pad) does not wiggle when locked in place. Its very solid metal!! Has a nice lock release that is easy to use with either hand I am a southpaw so this gun was ideal for me! More on that later!!

The mag locks into place with a resounding click. No mag wobble at all! All 6 of the mags I received have no wobble and no play. Incredibly solid sitting in the mag well. The weight of the gun with nothing but a mag must be around 3-5 pounds. Pretty heavy to use as a pistol with one hand but quite manageable!

Body:
Mostly abs plastic, the weight is mostly in the butt of the gun but is well balanced by the closed stock which has the metal running along the entire body. So when the stock is closed it feels very real weight single handed. When the butt stock is extended the weight virtually disappears. Using the foregirp one could hold this gun steady for hours with no fatigue. 4 sling mounts (two on either side) for mounting two or three point tactical slings.

Pistol grip:
My one and only disappointment in this beauty! It’s a very large grip, hard for medium and impossible for small hands! When the fire select is on full auto, the selector bumps into the top of your firing forefinger! Gloves make this fairly unnoticeable but without them it’s a twinge uncomfortable.

Controls:
I Love guns made for both hands! What can I say I am a south paw so the more ambidextrous the better!! Mag release (kinda hard to use no lie), bolt release and fire select are easy to use left or right handed!

Foregrip:
Locks down solidly. Great width fits in my hand perfect! To close it back up, press down on the lock piece and fold it back up.

Rails:
All full metal. There are three; two side rails for mounting a flashlight or laser, and the top rail, which is great for optics. The spacing is perfect all of my regular accessories fit on them find.

Included optics:
They are two ‘n ones! Folded down the sights serve as pistol sights with great white dot style optics. These work perfect up to around 50 feet. When you flip them up, you get some decent (albeit not great) rifle sights. The rear sight is adjustable. Made of a very solid abs plastic like the main body, these rifle sights work decently on full auto for spraying a small space, but for accurate single shots I would recommend a good red dot!

Oh what now you want how it performs? Uhhg FINE

FPS:
As mentioned early it was chroned via madbull chronograph at (with brand new mags in 70* weather with single shots) to average out at a small range between 360 and 380 fps with most shots falling around 375, with a few shots dropping low at the 340s and one high (2nd shot) at 387. This is using propane!

ROF:
Insane for a gas gun compared to any other I have seen besides reviews on the kwa mac 11. At a consistent 20 rps! That’s FAST. Full mag empty in close to 2 seconds. This gun is not for trigger happys and is best enjoyed with short squeeze bursts!

Blow back:
Don’t expect a kicker here. This gun barely jerks with each shot but has a nice ‘wobble’ on full auto. Don’t get down. This makes for an amazingly accurate gas sub machine gun (its no sniper and has a short outer barrel but the lack of kick does make it more accurate!). Bolt locks back consistently on every one of the 24 mags I have put through it so far!!

Magazines:
Like again mentioned, Its very easy to load up 40 rounds and you can squeeze down the spring for an extra 5-8 rounds. Some of the mags came with a slightly mis-molded feeding port. The bb’s had trouble being fed into the two mags that had this problem. A few scrapes with a sharp blade to remove the excess plastic eliminated the problem completely! Solid metal, and able to store A TON of gas!! Like pistol mags, the loading spring can be locked down for easy loading!
Feeding is almost flawless, though on full auto with lighter weight bb’s expect some double feeds. The heavier the bb the better the feeding, and the more accurate. I am currently using madbull .3 gram precisian grades.

Upgrades:
I am expecting a flood of upgrade parts to hit the market eventually. Think pdi 6.01 inner barrels, RA tech NPAS, maybe even a three round burst?!?! And a nut for installing a silencer!!! (that’s what I want more than anything!!)That would be amazinggg. Currently, the best approach to hitting the 400 fps range that I’ve heard of, is to replace one small part in the internals, with another standard kwa part! Its called the rocket valve and the one inside the KWA mp7a1 is metal, and replacing it with the plastic (?) one that kwa builds for their pistols hops the fps up to a consistent 400. (info from armies airsoft)

Durability/Repairs:
So far NO broken anything with 24 mags through it! The KSC (Japan) version has shortcomings but the KWA is completely solid from everywhere I have heard! Replacement parts will be up soon on KWA’s web site so even if I do manage to break something, I have a full map of the parts and can order new ones easily!

Playability/role:
Expect to be the lightest and fastest man out there with a gas blow back smg. This gun is perfectly balanced to use as pistol or in an assault gun role. Mags are not ridiculously out of the price range (considering what I pay for my G&P wocs mags at 80 a pop) at around $50. I picked up 5 extra mags when I purchased the gun, so with the one it game with in addition that gives me between 240-288 rounds depending on how I load up the mags!

Mag changing takes some getting use to with the butt stock extended but very at home feeling when being used as a pistol.  The magwell makes sliding a new mag a snap, and the solid click tells you it’s in and ready for more! Hit the bolt release and get your rounds out!

This gun is decent as a back up but perfect for a primary. The weight of it means that slinging this gun on your leg feels horrible, so unless you move slow this gun is not made to be strapped to your leg, its to damn hot to be anywhere but in your hands anyways.

Price:
This gun is actually a very decent price! $255 sounds out of many newer player price ranges but with a 10% off from airsoft gi (‘meu’ gets you 10% off till February your welcome!!) the price was irresistible!! All said and done, I picked up the gun, 5 extra mags, a cheap leapers red dot, and a tac sling for a very reasonable price!!

Firing:
Expect vids this weekend of its accuracy! Firing and all that good stuff! I’ve seen the vids on youtube and they leave much to be desired. (that reddragon airsoft guy makes me twinge and it looks like he is doing the review in his mom’s backyard…)

Pics: Here you go! Higher quality is on the way I only had this ancient camera that I might just  use the KWA on….

All of the pictures are here: because they are all larger than 1mgb!

enjoy and feel free to ask questions!

Nice review, I've been looking for a review of this weapon online and this is the first one I've seen.  Is that an M-6 tactical laser illuminator?  I've got one for my real steel Glock 23 and was always hesitant to mount it to an airsoft gun just cause the damn thing is so expensive.  I'm worried about a BB breaking the light.

When firing this gun on auto for an extended period of time, is there a chance that some of the internal components could freeze, becoming brittle and breaking?  I've always wondered if that was a risk on auto GBB's due to the fact that expanding gasses absorb heat. That happened to my KWA Mac-11, now I hear they replaced the plastic parts with metal ones, specifically the firing pin.  But metal can still become brittle and break, have you heard anything like that about this weapon?

There have been NO reported failures in any kwa mp7 yet from my following on other airsoft forums! And others have had theirs for almost two months longer than i have. and the m-6 is actually a replica i picked up for 60 bucks but does a great job and is insanely bright! Not as visable as green during the day but for my night games it does an amazing job! As for parts breaking, thats an easy fix with any kwa gun. Their full schematic lists out all parts, and often all you have to do is send them some photos of the broken part and they will send you a new one free of charge if its warentee covered.

that said theres always a chance for failure just like anything on earth lol

IF you are looking for another flashlight/laser combo at a good price check out the one on ebaybanned on their home page its under the new products section. I picked up mine from them, and even though some Chinese stuff is iffy this peice works amazing!

Where did you purchase your mags?  Aren't they typically fairly pricey for this gun?

Thanks.

well 50 each is not terribly pricy to me, even though I'm a college student I have some solid income. Others might find that out of their price range though! If you think 50 is bad you should see what I have to pay to get reliable magazines for my  G&P woc!! 80 a pop!! thats the zinger!!

And I bought from airsoftgi because they  have some great discounts goin on lol.

Good point.  Price is very subjective.  Given the overall averages of various magazine examples, $50 is pretty high.  With that said, if they tough, reliable and provide a good service life, I can see were it would be justifiable to own half a dozen of them, especially if one plans on using it as their primary gun.

Great review by the way......thanks for posting this.   :)

Hey sure thing! Used the gun and mags in game today! The gun is out ranged by most m4 to m16 length barrels which is fairly a given due to the pistol length inner barrel! I still can't believe the amount of gas the mags hold...120 rounds full auto! that is some niceeee usability especially with a speed loader on field.

One thing about the mags! neverrrrr mix different weights! I did it to see how it would feed and it was a nightmare haha! utter failure!
