Airsoft and Mask
« on: March 05, 2008, 06:52:58 PM »
I plan on waring a mask because I don't want to get a chipped tooth or a BB up my nose :P. (jk on the nose part), but I find a few problems...

Fogging up, how do you control this?
Hydration, how can you drink water with it on...from a tube or something maybe? Do games even last so long that you will need water?
Does mask effect hearing at all? ( i'm an Airsoft noob )
Can Paintball Mask even work for airsoft. I dont want to have my mask break on me from a plastic BB

This is the only face mask designed with airsoft in mind that I can think of.  I have one, it's very comfortable.  Fogging is a pretty minor issue, and lens cleaner is cheap, but I've never invested in it.  If the outdoor temperature is low, than fogging can get real bad.  I had a game in the pouring rain one day, very cold, and I was virtually blind.  Yes you can drink with these, and YES, this game lasts long enough to need hydration.  Games can go for many, many hours, and in some cases, days.  This ain't speedball.  Get a camelback.  Arguably the best piece of gear you can have.

Pretty cool looking mask. I was looking for something along the lines of also protecting the back of your head.  Unless theres others ways of doing this. A hat can maybe do some protecting maybe?

Or do BB's not hit hard enough to really do anythign to your back of the neck or head? I heard in paintball some people got masked that covered the back of the head in order to not passout from the hit. But im guessing paintball probably huts alot harder?

Depending on what type of force you are playing as, you can wear a ball cap, a watch cap, a helmet, a boonie hat, or a shemagh. The latter is for terrorist/insurgent/rebel forces.  I've never been shot in the back of the head, so I don't really know.

Are you expecting someone to sneak up to within 5 feet of the back of your head and shoot you? What about trying this approach, just wear a bandana around the lower half of your face or wear a balaclava?

He has a valid question which deserves a valid answer.

Airsoft bb's shoot with much less energy or joules than paintball shoots. Thus the "hit" or force you experience is much less than that of a paintball.  So much so that many choose not to wear a full mask, opting to take the risk of no full face protection in order to enjoy the benifits of a much lower profile eye pro system.

A strike to the back of the head may sting (depending on distance) your not going to pass out or feel like you just hit your head on a pole. Though a bb strike to the head is not without its dangers.  There is always the possiblility, and it has happened several times before, of breaking/chipping a front tooth and the breaking and bruising of the skin causing bleeding.  This is a risk how ever one calculates it. Though if I were to estimate chances from past experiences, the chances of getting hit in the tooth are low, like 1% at a normal outdoor game when engagement distances are greater.  Though when the engagement distances become closer like in a CQB situation, the percentage in my mind goes up. Most practice keeping their mouth closed inorded limit exposure to help protect their teeth and or wear balaclavas, bandanas or full face masks.   You will notice though for close quarter games most people choose to wear some sort of face/teeth protection. Though we dont do these very much.

As for masks with full face protection there are many out there including your standard black or green paintball mask.  I suggest coming out to a game to look at what different people use and ask them what they like and dislike with their current systems.  You'll find that most people love to talk about their gear and will gladly answer any questions you may have to the best of their ability. You will find that some dislike masks while others may like the security they gain.

No need to worry about the back of your head, unless you have some kind of structure abnormality, t may sting and give you a little welt, but you will be good.

There are some sleeves as well that go around the bottom portion of your head, like this http://www.lapolicegear.com/unarhegetaho.html and variations of that if you want some protection.

Or you can always just get a mouthpiece and use that.

You laugh, back in the days when I only wore carpenter googles, I was shot up the nose. IT SUCKED. Wear a full face protection system, whatever it is. That was honestly the worst pain I have ever felt airsofting.

Wow... Didn't think think that could really happen. I plan on waring full face protection most likely, as I don't want to get scars or bumps on my face. Not very attarctive for my girl friend to see if I do lol

wow...an airsoft bb up the nose? O_o
I have been doing a couple small backyard skirmishes with my brother with pistols, and face shots are common.
I have a JD paintball mask, and I was able to drink with a hydro pack hose (very hard though, had to lift up my chin, exposing my neck, thus making it hard to drink)
So I went ahead and wore snow boarding goggles, with bandanas around the front of my neck (cant tell you how many times I've been shot there)
And I also wear one around the beck of my neck, which removes most of the fear of getting shot in the back.
Over all I perfer a full face mask for all day events and big guns.

Full face protection is a good idea, but a paintball mask is sketchy because of the sighting issues.  Do NOT use mesh goggles, bb shards go through the mesh and will hit you. They are not eye protection.  Most people use a handkerchief or something similar, Cabela's and the like have hunting hoods that I think would probably serve the purpose best. They're a bit heavier cloth than most bandanas, and they cover your whole head, as well as hanging loose in front of your face, so they'll slow the bb before it hits you.

I wear a thin balaclava, and only got a small red mark on my cheek from a 370fps gun at 20 feet.  BB's don't hurt, but you definitely know you got hit if it catches skin or thin cloth. If it hits bone (knuckle, elbow, chin, etc.) it'll sting for a while.

Most likely I'm going to get this mask. The prise is really good for me compared to some paintball mask... unless theres a paintball mask that somehow helps from getting foggy

Since we're talking about masks...
I plan on going to one of your guy's events sooner or later, and know I have to wear a full face mask.
Well...when I get the gear, I'd perfer to wear a helmet like this one
http://s63.photobucket.com/albums/h155/ ... -06-31.jpg

But I have a full face mask, will it get in the way?
Possibly, If I bring my goggles/bandanas, will I be able to wear those instead?
