Cleaning a plate carrier?
« on: November 26, 2010, 09:39:17 PM »
How should I go about cleaning my plate carrier? After several outings in the wonderful AZ sun my rig has acquired an unpleasant aroma. I don't think you can just toss it in the washing machine, I would think that would not work out too well. Do I just buy a bottle of Febreze and spray it down? If you have had success cleaning your gear, how did you do it? I have spent some hard earned money on my set-up and I don't want to ruin it.

Down-range we just used a bucket, water, laundry soad and a scrub brush. Worked over there, should work fine here.

i just take out the armor (plates and soft) and take everything out of the IFAK and all other pouches...

and toss it in the wash, normal detergent. let it air dry. I did it all through IET and here now that im in my unit.

thats what I do every time I wash my IBA. the worst it ever was, was after AT this year. a week in the field, one day break, then another week in the field., it was RANK. washer did all the work.

So it is ok to machine wash after all? I would figure air drying is the only way, but I was unsure if detergents were ok to use. I just have a cheapo Condor plate carrier but it works for me and I just don't want to mess it up.

use less than you normally would. use the same detergent but use a little bit. just to kick loose all the junk. and if it still comes out a little soapy, rinse it.

I do this for my issued plate carrier, might be better stitched than the condor, just a caution.

maybe put it on delicate.

Spin dry will wreak the waterproofing on the nylon as it tries to force water through the urethane coating. Just air dry.
