Im right there with you Paco.. ill be 27 this year, and i only got my first gun (let alone shot my first gun) within the last 2 years.  I came from a moderatly anti-gun family, so i had never even shot before until i went to one of the ARFCOM shoots in Casa Grande.  I still feel goofy goin out shooting with folks who know sooooo much.  I feel stupid at times since i still dont know much at all.  Ill get over it though :D

Im assuming this is the kind of poll we reply to, since I ALLWAYS cant see the frickin' options to vote...

Ive allways liked shooting, but I dont hunt.  I did some shooting with my uncle and cousin when I was younger, but didnt buy my first gun until I was 20.  I now have bought 5 guns and currently own the following.

Bushmaster AR-15
Sig P232 (.380)
Romanian AK-47 with a dragunov stock
Mossberg Pump 12 gauge

The first gun I bought was a Sig .22lr Trailside target pistol.

I got my first gun when I was like 10. Of course I could not mess with it without the father around. After I was 17 I did not mess with guns much.  Never liked hunting, and would not kill an animal unless I had too.  About 2 years ago I got re-introduced to target shooting and practical shooting.  After that I went to Airsoft.  Now I'm hooked.

I was a scout. Just like in the movie Spy Game "Where did you learn to shoot?"..."The Boy Scouts."..."Haha,No, really?"...."Really... The Boy Scouts."  I shot 22's and blackpower(now that is a fun shoot).  I was in the market for an AK or a rifle but in reality I dont have too much time to go out to shoot.  Airsoft is my shooting time.  Plus ammo is not cheap and most of my fun money is on airsoft.  So it looks like I have choosen airsoft where I can shoot my friends instead of shooting with them [:P]

Ah . . .the memories. Ok, I'm only 18, but I've been shooting since I was 6 or 7. Got a winchester .22 from my dad for my 11th birthday. This last January, I bought my first "big" purchase - a Springfield M1A. Couldn't be more happier. She shoots like a dream and I put a redfield illuminator 3X9X40 on her so I can take her hunting (with a five round magazine only, of course). Speaking of which, does anyone know a good place to get G.I. M14 magazines for a reasonable price?

Fulton Armory (fulton-armory.com) has a good reputation and some pretty good prices.

I started out with BB guns when I was about 11 or 12.  I was lucky and we had a really large forested area just down the street from my house were my buddies and I would hang out during the summer, build tree forts and shoot squirels and birds.  Then when I was old enough, (16) my grandfather got me into hunting and would take me out for rabbits and deer.  My mom bought me my first shotgun for Christmas when I was 16.  It NEVER left the house unless I was going hunting with Grandpa.

Oh yea, I forgot to add that part.  Just like Harley, I was really into bb guns when I was younger.  I guess I was AROUND 8 years old when I got my first bb gun.  I also was lucky and had a big open desert area about 50 feet from my house where I too built forts and shot birds and prarie dogs.

For being 18, I'm blessed in that I own many firearms. I actually got started at an early age. I was into the BB gun thing as a kid, as would regularly shoot soda cans with my dad in the back yard. Then I got into paintball (since that was something I could buy and do without the parents). However, the money from that almost went to a Beretta M92 Compact at the age of 14. My Dad talked me out of it (
"9mm is so expensive!"), but we co-purchased a Browning BuckMark instead (still aged 14). He bought, and I gave him my $100 for my half.

Fast forward to age 16. My grandmother had a brand new, never shot S&W 422 (pre-ban) that she had no use for, so she gave it to me as an early Christmas gift. WooHoo! At age 17, I got that Beretta, but as a M96 instead, and as an Eagle Scout rank gift (if you knew about my project, you might agree with it as well). Later that year, a guy in my ward at church was selling a Winchester M70 in .308 for $200. You know what? My parents said I could have it, so I bought it (person-to-person sale). I know, I know, I was only 17, but I only had four months before I turned 18, and I had my parents blessing. [:D] Also later that year, a guy on rimfirecentral.com was selling a Savage MkII LV for a steal, so I picked that up as well. It was almost brand new, and it came with a decent scope. It now shoots .3" groups at 50 yards all day long with good ammo if I do my part.

Now fast forward to current times. Last weekend, I bought an LPK for my new AR15 that I will be building. Thursday, I called RRA and ordered a CAR A-4 16" pre-ban upper, chrome lined, with a mid-length handguard, complete with B/BC/CH for $457.50 shipped. I also received my RRA 6 position stock on Thursday as well. All that's left is an ARMS #40 BUIS (maybe an LMT BUIS), an Ameetec Arms lower receiver, and about 6 mags to get me started. So I've got quite the collection.

Is there an end in sight? Probably not. The only break I'm taking is for my mission. [:D] After I get back, I'll probably SBR my AR15, and get a 11.5" pre-ban upper, and a 20" upper for varmint hunting. It's a disease, I tell ya!

I think I have you all beat:  I had my first gun at the age of 4.  It is a Stevens Model 94 .410 shotgun (still in my gun safe) engraved with my name and Christmas date I received it.

Well actually my dad gave me a gun he found in the truck of a car he bought when I was 5 years old.  I'm still not sure if it was a real .22 or a BB gun.  It was a lever action Winchester though and ended up getting destroyed in an aparment building fire since it was in our storage room at the time.  I just use to run around with my buddies playing cowboys and indians at the time.

I didn't vote since I'm not 18, but I own a Ruger 10/22 and some crappy, old 22/45 my grandpa gave me. That pistol is really picky on ammo and almost never works. But I know as soon as I turn 18 I'm buying some guns for home defense, 12 gauge for sure and some good pistol for concealed carry [:D] Actually, I don't think you can get a CCW permit at 18... can you?

Hmm lets see.. went shooting with Dad and Grand Pa at age 5 or 6, even with the bee hive in the back of the trailer they had me use to rest the rifle on, I was hooked. Got my first BB gun at 10, spent thousands of hours with that ol red ryder in the back yard, and then the hills as I grew a lil older, round age 12-13 I busted but all winter shoveling snow off roofs to save up and gave Ma the money for my first real Firearm a Westernfield EB22 they used to sell ar Montgomery Ward and Sear for about $50 in the the fifties, I got mine for a whoping $112 at a pawn shop in Northern Cali. I spent every dime I coudl scrounge from then on out to keep it supplied with ammo, and as I got older I slowly increased my arsenal, had it stolen once (including my first rifle the bastards) and rebuilt it again. Airsoft was something I got into to increase the training to dollar ratio, Live ammo is just soo darn expensive.

Let's see, yeah I am over 18. Got that part. My family was totally anti-gun, so none as a kid. Owned my first guns when I was a cop 20 or so years ago. First personal weapon was a S&W Model 39, loovely little gun. Then got issued things like an H&K squeeze cocker, can't rememebr the model number. Fast forward to life with Greg...took him shooting handguns when he was 10 or so. He now owns a Remington 700 with a scope and bipod and an AK. Hard to say what we'll add to our arsenal going forward.

Don't own any firearms now.  Used to go shooting with my Father all the way up till a few years ago till he got rid of most of his guns.  My Father-in-law is a big collector but he lives in Florida now. When my wife was a kid he used to take her shooting every once and a while.  The bug is there, so eventually we will purchase our own firearms.

Woody, I believe that is a P7M8 or a P7M13, depending on magazine capacity. VERY nice guns. Very light trigger pull once the cocker has been pulled, and since they are gas operated, they are able to eject spent cases without an extractor. If I was 21, and had that much money to spend, I'd buy one in a heart beat.

Yea paco, I passed, it was so tough man, I dont know how I made it through that class.  They make you shoot a paper target from like three feet away.  Im surprised I hit the thing.  I cant shoot that well, I just like guns because they accessories my shoes and necklaces really well.

Anyhow, I took it at the scottsdale gun club.  Really good instructors there.  Every person there who had allready taken a class in the past, said that the class at SGC is by far the best they have seen, and I really cant think of anything else that they could do to make it any better.  Plus, for 109 dollars, you get other stuff too, heres what I got.  For starters, I got to do about 20 minutes on their FATS machine with an M4, which broke down and they are going to replace, so because not everyone got to use the FATS machine, we all got cards for free range time.  We got offered 150 bucks off of a benneli shotgun, and I think money off a glock, and money off memberships if we wanted them.  Based on what it costs to get range time and use the fats machine, you get a whole lot for your 109 dollars, plus it was real upbeat, and I was laughing every 15 minutes, which is hard to make me do anymore.

Im off to work.

P.S.  Paco, if we ever shoot together, its comp time.

First handgun at 18(sw airweight).  first rifle at 19(mak90).   My favorite handgun is my series 1 kimber I lightly customized and my favorite rifle is my Smith Enterprises rebuilt M1A with all GI parts.     I also prefer desert shooting to "ranges".   I'm not fond of bench shooting, except for zeroing when i can't lay prone.

Not to get this thread off topic but I've had my AZ CCW for over 5 years and both times I've had to qualify, (once to get it and once to renew it) it was very scary watching some of these people shoot.  So when Joey says he passed that's saying something.  Good job Joey!

I thought the CCW for AZ shooting requirements were 70% at 5 to 10 yards with 10 shots.  Has anyone not received a CCW because of not "passing" the shooting portion of the 16 hour course?  I mean, 7 out of 10 shots within the 2nd ring at 5 to 10 yards...  in the *highly* unlikely event that someone was unable to do that, do they allow you to try again until you *can* do it, or is it just too bad - no <s>soup</s> CCW for you!

<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote">
A.  Minimum standard: At least 10 rounds with a firearm and live ammunition, no time limit (5 rds at 5 yards and 5 rds at 10 yards).

B.  NRA TQ-15, TQ-19 or equivalent, i.e., secondary scoring ring equal to 14 x 16, or less. Shots outside of the 2nd scoring ring will not count.

C.  70 percent hits within the secondary scoring ring are required for a passing score.

lol!  Well, the NRA hasn't even endorsed a presidential candidate yet.  I'm not a fence sitter, as I know where I stand on the issues, I am just witholding my monetary support of the NRA until they make a couple decisions.  Barring any under-the-table deals by the NRA, the AWB is dead.  I'm waiting, just to make sure.  I think that once the AWB dies, and the NRA is assured that it's dead (mid-Sept) then they will endorse GWB.  I'm waiting to see what happens with this.  [:p]

Title:
Post by: Mr. Joseph on August 03, 2004, 07:23:34 PM
I joined, its only 25 bucks, maybe your extra 25 dollars is what they need to fight the AWB.

AS far as the ccw goes, I think its harder at the SGC than other places.  Shifty said his was cake, and if you failed, you could redo it.  He also said it wasnt timed.  Its not supposed to be timed, but at the gun club they tell you to shoot as quickly as possible, and its not just 10 rounds at each range.  They tell you where to shoot, like a mozambeak (no clue how to spell that).  The half of the class that I was with passed no problem, the other half had a few that got to redo a few shots.  On top of that, everyone was extremely nervous, you had to do everything the way they said to do it, including standing nervous at low ready for 5 minutes without moving and inch.

Joey,It all depends on your instructor and the place the class is taken...Iam guessing.I took mine at Red mountain firearms training academy in AJ.The guy who ran the class was a retired Tempe detective, real good guy.He worked with everyone who needed it and let the ones who did'nt just do what was needed to qualify...no more,no less.

Harley isn't your Colt a little hard  to conceal carry, and very heavy?
Title:
Post by: Harley on August 04, 2004, 08:45:21 AM
Not a bit, that's why I chose a Commander instead of a full size 1911.  I also have a custom made holster that sits higher on my belt for conceiled carry.  I like a heavy gun, less felt recoil for quick follow up shots.  I use to carry a light weight Colt Officer's model but I found it too hard to control.
Title:
Post by: Mr. Joseph on August 04, 2004, 09:02:39 AM
Harley, is the commander anything like the defender.  Im thinking about buying a compact 1911 in the future, and I saw a colt defender at teh gun club.  I like kimbers, but I dont like all the fancy **** sticking off the back of the gun.

Oh yea, I carry a Sig P232 in .380 auto

Quick question, my instructor told me that .380 is actually 9mm short (which I allready knew), he went on to say that 9mm is .356 (or .357)  If .380 auto has a diameter of .356, why do they call it .380?

Bushmaster AR-15
Remington model 1100 12 g. with the trap and shoot barrel and the barrel for shooting slugs
My first rifle was the Bushmaster and my dad thought I was nuts, he said it was ugly, and might shoot like ****!!! Well lets just say he had a change of heart, and was converted when he started shooting it!!!

Joey, the defender is basically an Officer's model, short 3 inch barrel versus a 4 inch barrel on a Commander, and a 5 inch barrel on a full size 1911.

I carried a Colt Commander for many years as my off duty weapon.  I'm not a big guy (and I was even smaller back then, heheh).  It was surprisingly concealable.

It also rates as one of my all time favorite handguns.

Size is a big factor in what you can carry comfortably and what you can conceil.  I could probably conceil a couple desert eagles under a jacket with no problem, whereas someone with a smaller build wouldn't be able to hide them very well.

I'm thinking about getting a S&W99 or the S&W 40VE. Should I save my money and get the sw99 or just get the 40VE? I like both, and they both fit good on me, but I've never shot one yet. Or should I stick w/ the classic 1911?

I got my first gun when my parents got devorced. A little revolver BB gun, then a Sheridan/Benjamin .22 when I was 10, killed lots of rabits and 'yotes. Good times

I have a Walther P99 (.40SW) (of which, the SW99 is a copy) and it's a medium-sized gun, but it's not thin, so it probably isn't the best for a CC weapon.  If I decide to get my CCW, I will most likely carry my P220.
Title:
Post by: Harley on August 04, 2004, 04:26:51 PM
I had an SW99 and although I loved how it felt in my hand I couldn't shoot it very well so I got rid of it and went back to the 1911.  I suggest you shoot as many guns as you can before you make your decision.  Go to the range and see what everybody is shooting and start up a conversation.  Most people are willing to let you try their guns out.

The nice thing is there are a LOT of good, reliable semi-automatics out there these days.  Like Harley suggested, try out as many as you can.  I carried a S&W 459 (really dating myself now) off duty for a while until I decided it was just too darn unreliable.  I wasn't real big on the Browning HiPower either.  Back in the old days, we really didn't have that many good choices.  But nowadays, oh boy!  A lot of great stuff out there.

I love 1911's for concealment as they are super thin and because uh... well... they are 1911's : )

I also have a Kahr K40 with is a wonderful concealment gun.   Its very flat and is all steel.  its about the size of a Makarov but in .40      its also very controlable with standard pressure rounds.   It will try and jump out of your hand with corbon 135 grainers though.   That is one HOT round!!

I also have a walther p99 in .40.    that is one great gun but its pretty fat.  I think it makes a better service pistol than a concealment job.  I, like Harley do not shoot it quite as well as my 1911 but I'm comfortable enough with it for the legal range I would have to use it at.   both the Kahr and Walther are Ambi right out of the box.. most 1911's will have to have the ambi safety installed if you are a lefty like me.

Got a BB gun for christmas when I was 7.  Started hunting with my dad when I was 9.  Shot thousands of shotgun rounds at various trap and skeet and sporting clay ranges.
I current;y don't own any guns myself, only because my dad owns any practical guns that I would want.  He never really got into any kind of tactical guns.  He only owns guns that he uses for shooting, plus a glock 9mm that he has for protection.
I'm planning on getting s rifle some time soon, and a pistol after my 21st birthday which is in less than a year.

<br />Kynetic, buy an AR15 to celebrate the fall of the AWB (if it falls. Not over 'til it's over). I'm building my own to suit my tastes, and I don't think you'll be disappointed. [:D]

Personally I think that the AR looks and shoots like a toy (my uncle calls them "poodleshooters"[:P]). It might be just me, but I'd recommend an M1A in the standard .308. Now that is a pretty, yet lethal looking rifle. I got mine in January of '02 and haven't ever had a second thought. They are a bit more than an AR, but they are better made from what I've seen. You can get new ones from the Springfield Armory for about the same as a used (don't know why). Anyway, thats just my opinion.

They may look like toys, but they sure ain't. I'm not going to get into a "which is better" war, but I'll agree that I like both. The AR is just cheaper to shoot, less recoil, and more fun for you buck. M1's are better suited to longer-ranged stuff (which I like), but the AR is a quick little shooter. If I could afford both, I'd have both. But my M70 in .308 does the long work for me. [:D]

Every collection should have an AR, AK  and some type of .308 semi auto rifle.  I like the M1A1's, I think they look very sexy.  But after owning and shooting both the M1A1 and a FAL, I'll stick with my FAL.  I can shoot it much faster and more accurately than the M1A1.  Plus magazines for the FAL are much cheaper than the M1A1 right now.  $10 for brand new FAL mags, versus $50 and up for an M1A1 mag.  Hopefully that will change in a month.

M1A1 a .308?  Or do you mean M1A?

I agree that the M1A "looks" sexier than the FAL and other black .308's, but is bettered by the FAL in many aspects.

You knew what I meant so why did you ask...? [;)]  Yes an M1A, as Paco pointed out an M1A1 could be either a Thompson SMG or an M1 Paratrooper Carbine.  Bet you didn't think about that did you Paco?  And I didn't say it "looked sexier", I said it "looked sexy".  FAL's have a mistique all their own.

Speaking of AK . . . I can't stand the sights on those things. Gun shoots great just hope you don't have to rely on the irons. As for M1A, has anyone seen the new Springfield SOCOM M1A? The power of a .308 with only an 16 1/4 in. barrel! Plus the new compensator on it is supposed to work extremely well.

Yeah they're cute, I've always like carbine length rifles for some reason.  That's why my FAL is cut down to 16 inches.

I've shot the short M1A. It's pretty nice, except I can't imagine the barrel-mounted scout scope mount will hold zero very well when you're firing a lot.  It was smokin' hot after 20 rounds.

Scope has kept zero just fine on my M1A. The M1A is essentially the platform for the
m-21 sniper system used through Vietnam up until the 80's.

Naw, I don't have room the Abrahms in my driveway along with the Hummer.

I did however go to high school with a guy who's dad owned a WWII Sherman tank.  They use to drive it around on their property back in NY.

Here's a little note from JT Ready who is running for State Rep

Marine Corps Rules for Gunfighting

1. Bring a gun. Preferably, bring at least two guns. Bring all of your
friends who have guns.

2. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammo is cheap. Life
is expensive.

3. Only hits count. The only thing worse than a miss is a slow miss.

4. If your shooting stance is good, you're probably not moving fast
enough nor using cover correctly.

5. Move away from your attacker. Distance is your friend. (Lateral and
diagonal movement are preferred.)

6. If you can choose what to bring to a gunfight, bring a long gun and a
friend with a long gun.

7. In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance, or
tactics. They will only remember who lived.

8. If you are not shooting, you should be communicating, reloading, and
running.

9. Accuracy is relative: most combat shooting standards will be more
dependent on "pucker factor" than the inherent accuracy of the gun.

9.5 Use a gun that works EVERY TIME. "All skill is in vain when an Angel
pisses in the flintlock of your musket."

10. Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have
to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

11. Always cheat; always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.

12. Have a plan.

13. Have a back-up plan, because the first one won't work.

14. Use cover or concealment as much as possible.

15. Flank your adversary when possible. Protect yours.

16. Don't drop your guard.

17. Always tactical load and threat scan 360 degrees.

18. Watch their hands. Hands kill. (In God we trust. Everyone else, keep
your hands where I can see them).

19. Decide to be aggressive ENOUGH, quickly ENOUGH.

20. The faster you finish the fight, the less shot you will get.

21. Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you
meet.

22. Be courteous to everyone, friendly to no one.

23. Your number one Option for Personal Security is a lifelong
commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.

24. Do not attend a gunfight with a handgun, the caliber of which does
not start with a "4."

Navy Rules for Gunfighting

1. Go to Sea.

2. Send the Marines.

3. Drink Coffee....watch the action on CNN

Could anyone who knows FOR SURE, possibly military, describe in DETAIL the proper way to line up the front and rear sights on an AR-15, and where the target should be placed in line with the sights (ie, this peice lines up with the bottom of the circly, blah blah)  A drawing of the front and rear sight and a target would be awesome if you know of a link to one.
Title:
Post by: Harley on August 16, 2004, 09:49:34 PM
Your front sight post should be centered so that the tip of the post is directly in the center of the ghost ring, (rear sight).  The tip of the post should be at the 6 o'clock position on your target.  If your going for a head shot, then the post should be centered on the head.  Pretty simple really.

Thats perfect, thanks.  To clear up one more thing though, I would want to line the target up with the whole post, or the tip of the post?
Title:
Post by: delta_echo on August 17, 2004, 10:44:39 AM
Oh I can hit stuff fine with the AK, just harder to aquire the target with those sights in my opinion. Maybe its just a matter of getting used to it (I've only shot about 1,000 rds. through AKs). I just know that I can pick up some rifles and be at ease immediately with them.

For John and others; how hard is it to build a FAL? I see lots of kits and stuff to get for it, but is it worth it? Compaired to other semi-auto rifles is it worth it to build this gun? I like the .308 round and I want a semi, but is there something else more accurate/better for the price?

It's not hard if you have the tools to do it.  Which I happen to do, but it cost me a couple hundred dollars for all of them. I have the ability to barrel FAL receivers and headspace them which is the hard part of putting any gun kit together.
Title: For those 18 or older, do you own any firearms?
Post by: Paco on July 30, 2004, 11:11:14 AM
<b>(This is for those who are 18 or older - if you are under 18, please don't vote!)</b> Obviously, all of us are here are interested in guns/gear/military/etc.  My father took me shooting (mostly .22's) when I was younger quite a bit, but I honestly didn't do anything with real guns for over 10 years until Harley invited me to Ben Avery just over a year ago.  After that, I was hooked.  I didn't become a gun owner until I was 27 years old.  It was mostly due to the fact that I just had no desire since I hadn't really done it for so long.  I was ambivalent about guns in general.  Anyway, just out of curiosity, if you're here and you're over 18, do you own a gun?  If not, why?
