Joey, the defender is basically an Officer's model, short 3 inch barrel versus a 4 inch barrel on a Commander, and a 5 inch barrel on a full size 1911.

I carried a Colt Commander for many years as my off duty weapon.  I'm not a big guy (and I was even smaller back then, heheh).  It was surprisingly concealable.

It also rates as one of my all time favorite handguns.

Size is a big factor in what you can carry comfortably and what you can conceil.  I could probably conceil a couple desert eagles under a jacket with no problem, whereas someone with a smaller build wouldn't be able to hide them very well.

I'm thinking about getting a S&W99 or the S&W 40VE. Should I save my money and get the sw99 or just get the 40VE? I like both, and they both fit good on me, but I've never shot one yet. Or should I stick w/ the classic 1911?

I got my first gun when my parents got devorced. A little revolver BB gun, then a Sheridan/Benjamin .22 when I was 10, killed lots of rabits and 'yotes. Good times

I have a Walther P99 (.40SW) (of which, the SW99 is a copy) and it's a medium-sized gun, but it's not thin, so it probably isn't the best for a CC weapon.  If I decide to get my CCW, I will most likely carry my P220.

I had an SW99 and although I loved how it felt in my hand I couldn't shoot it very well so I got rid of it and went back to the 1911.  I suggest you shoot as many guns as you can before you make your decision.  Go to the range and see what everybody is shooting and start up a conversation.  Most people are willing to let you try their guns out.

The nice thing is there are a LOT of good, reliable semi-automatics out there these days.  Like Harley suggested, try out as many as you can.  I carried a S&W 459 (really dating myself now) off duty for a while until I decided it was just too darn unreliable.  I wasn't real big on the Browning HiPower either.  Back in the old days, we really didn't have that many good choices.  But nowadays, oh boy!  A lot of great stuff out there.

I love 1911's for concealment as they are super thin and because uh... well... they are 1911's : )

I also have a Kahr K40 with is a wonderful concealment gun.   Its very flat and is all steel.  its about the size of a Makarov but in .40      its also very controlable with standard pressure rounds.   It will try and jump out of your hand with corbon 135 grainers though.   That is one HOT round!!

I also have a walther p99 in .40.    that is one great gun but its pretty fat.  I think it makes a better service pistol than a concealment job.  I, like Harley do not shoot it quite as well as my 1911 but I'm comfortable enough with it for the legal range I would have to use it at.   both the Kahr and Walther are Ambi right out of the box.. most 1911's will have to have the ambi safety installed if you are a lefty like me.

Got a BB gun for christmas when I was 7.  Started hunting with my dad when I was 9.  Shot thousands of shotgun rounds at various trap and skeet and sporting clay ranges.
I current;y don't own any guns myself, only because my dad owns any practical guns that I would want.  He never really got into any kind of tactical guns.  He only owns guns that he uses for shooting, plus a glock 9mm that he has for protection.
I'm planning on getting s rifle some time soon, and a pistol after my 21st birthday which is in less than a year.

Kynetic, buy an AR15 to celebrate the fall of the AWB (if it falls. Not over 'til it's over). I'm building my own to suit my tastes, and I don't think you'll be disappointed. [:D]

Personally I think that the AR looks and shoots like a toy (my uncle calls them "poodleshooters"[:P]). It might be just me, but I'd recommend an M1A in the standard .308. Now that is a pretty, yet lethal looking rifle. I got mine in January of '02 and haven't ever had a second thought. They are a bit more than an AR, but they are better made from what I've seen. You can get new ones from the Springfield Armory for about the same as a used (don't know why). Anyway, thats just my opinion.

They may look like toys, but they sure ain't. I'm not going to get into a "which is better" war, but I'll agree that I like both. The AR is just cheaper to shoot, less recoil, and more fun for you buck. M1's are better suited to longer-ranged stuff (which I like), but the AR is a quick little shooter. If I could afford both, I'd have both. But my M70 in .308 does the long work for me. [:D]

Every collection should have an AR, AK  and some type of .308 semi auto rifle.  I like the M1A1's, I think they look very sexy.  But after owning and shooting both the M1A1 and a FAL, I'll stick with my FAL.  I can shoot it much faster and more accurately than the M1A1.  Plus magazines for the FAL are much cheaper than the M1A1 right now.  $10 for brand new FAL mags, versus $50 and up for an M1A1 mag.  Hopefully that will change in a month.
