Airsoft UAV
« on: June 05, 2010, 02:01:30 AM »
I'm not sure if this is in the right section if it is not i apologize please move it.
Hi Guys, im currently in the process of making an RC UAV, though it didn't start out for airsoft i figured if i stick the right video camera on it i can make a UAV, I got in contact with a friends uncle who has achieved this feat and he pointed me to what i would need to get. Honestly for a good quality UAV that would need a team of 2 to operate, with shipping for all the different parts and what not its right around $500 dollars.

I currently have some stuff i am selling so hopefully that will boost me for the last $200 i need for this project. Any thoughts or ideas about this? Like how it could be worked into a game?

The monitor would be a simple portable DVD player hooked up to the receiver and the camera would be on 2 different servos so i could rotate the camera, all and all its quite achievable, and since most of our A/O's are big open areas i think it would work perfectly, 1 person (probably me) would actually fly the UAV while someone else looks for targets on the monitor and operates the camera. And then could Radio in positions to Teammates. Donations or purchases on my items would be nice funding =D.

Thoughts?
This is my friends uncle's UAV with the exact parts i am getting. Its pretty cool nothing good in the footage though just shows the capabilities

Donations anyone? :D  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D

If that's the quality of the actual video that is sent wireless to your monitor... that is phenomenal for only $500!!  I personally think there are a lot of good uses for a UAV.  I'm interested to talk to you more about this.  I'll send you a PM when I get a chance.

think about just how fast that thing is going to get shot out of the air...
because if it's fair to have eyes in the sky, it seems to me that it's fair to poke them.

but... pretty sweet. would make a nice bonus objective for larger scenarios and whatnot. "Capture the remote uplink, get 1min of UAV" type of thing.

If you make it just another piece of gear that anyone can carry or anyone can use at any time... I think it would be an extremely unfair advantage. Especially if you make it against the rules to shoot it or the person piloting it (I would assume you would protect the RC controller as well as the UAV)

For a large scale game I could see this as a valuable resource for game control. For a small local game eyes on a hill are more effective.

Also, you must realize that by essentially taking yourself out of play to fly the thing you are leaving your team with one less body. Or if you were in play, think of concentrating on flying the thing while getting shot.

The only way this would work is if you had a dedicated base and staff to monitor and relay information.

ive seen afew airsoft UAV models in games , their useful if they have a way to auto-circle without a driver, IO* i havent seen a goo one yet.  the only way to get info from the person with the UAV screen radio is radio and they cant give you a good reading unless you get good maps .    the best air support i want to see in a game is a feather light with a mounted M60 / m249 *not mini *there too heavy. flying around with a radio and colored smoke grenades calling out positions

Its wired. It would be off the battlefield, probably in the damn parking lot, true it would be easy to get shot down but i might be a little pissed if you shoot down my 500 dollar UAV. So it would be nice if no one was allowed to shoot it down. I still think it could be worked into a game, small maybe not so much. But i think how it could work would be like both teams need to capture point X which ever team gets and holds point X gets UAV support. It could be used by both teams, if someone really works it into a scenario game it could work well i think.

Any Ideas on how to work it into a game =D? I mean i think it would be fun. And batman, that's actually a cheaper version camera, im getting a diffrent one and in full High Resolution color.

Anyone on here have any RC things i could maybe buy off of them? I'm looking for a Futaba radio on 72mhz. The camera would require one remote, and the plane another. So that adds to the price. I could get an 80 dollar head-tracker, but its 80 extra bucks,  :(

haha, i'm not quite sure about the airborne drones firing grenade shells..

the UAV idea seems a bit impractical for this sport as well, getting someone up on high ground with binocs + a radio, and you have yourself an effective method of locating the target(s)

True, but I mostly play in large open flat areas, MTT's UAC and Fighter-town paintball, like at Black Hawk Down is a good example

that would be DEVASTATING at MTT with the open-top buildings. lol. I wouldn't make it fire grenade shells, that's quite a bit of kick for a small plane like that... would be pretty tough to keep it controllable in the air.

Also, I wouldn't arm it... that DEFINITELY makes it fair game, and it would have to be in range to fire... and in airsoft, range works in both directions.

ditto, if a plane is shooting at me, i'm going to shoot right back

if your going to do that use a remote controlled micro jet some of the micro jets can go up to speeds of 200 mph i know i have a friend that has one and is attaching 4 308's to it. most of the micro jets are made out of a aluminum alloy so they can withstand a punishment plus at that speed good luck hitting it.
