« on: July 03, 2011, 02:29:49 PM »
Ive been pending on going there after this senior year. But ive heard many differnt things about the school. My engineering teacher says they are not worth the cost. Any one go there? Is it good? Are the staff and students freindly? Anyone know how good the wrestling program is? How is the school in your opinion?

I just completed my freshman year there. Engineering is hard as hell, so I switched to an Aeronautical Sciences degree. If you're just doing engineering its about as expensive as a lot of other schools, its the flight that's ludicrously expensive. I have yet to have a bad teacher here but have heard a few horror stories. As with any college experience you'll meet really cool people from all over the world (I've got friends from India, Switzerland, Iran...).

I have no clue about the wrestling program, but it seems like they have their shit together.

Overall, i'd say that so far I love the school. I've always wanted to be a pilot so its the perfect fit for me. There's also quite a few other people who go to the school on the forums, and for longer than I have so you'll probably hear different opinions.

Depends on what your goals are.  If you're considering a career in military aviation I highly recommend it.  A good friend of mine is a captain in the USAF and graduated from there with his BSE in Aerospace Engineering.  Simply having Embry Riddle on his degree has opened many many doors for him from work at NASA Dryden to Flight School and a coveted slot at AFIT.  In the civilian world not so sure, I've got an Aerospace Engineering degree myself from a different university and haven't had terrible trouble finding work outside of the typical issues with the economic downturn and the defense industry.   There just aren't that many of us since most can't handle the program.  That said, you have to be willing to move where the work is and you've got to really want an engineering degree.  Like Terreus said, engineering doesn't ever get any easier.  My freshman class started with something like 250 in the program, by the time we got to graduation there were 5 left including myself.

I know the Army ROTC program here is great. If you want to be Avaition in the Military this is a great place to go. I'm not positive on this but I think every Army Guard SMP cadet that went here ended up getting to pick between Apache Longbows, or Blackhawks.

We are short 37 Pilots in Arizona too so its easy to get IF you meet the pre-req's, and don't screw up.

I had a Soldier that I enlisted (he's a CW3 now) that had his degree already I belive it was in Flight Operations or something like that, he hasn't used it in the civilian world, he ended up a pilot though.

the wrestling program is excellent, i've trained with some of their athletes a couple of years ago and they all were excellent competitors. If you are thinking civilian fixed-wing aviation its not worth it. An airline doesn't generally care if you got your certification from riddle or bob's aviation, you all get the same little piece of paper from the FAA and you are all as equally qualified, but having a minor in engineering of course changes things a bit. This is why the aviation section of the school got huge cutbacks. But if you want a rotary certification there is a little private deal up here called guidance. The best in high-altitude training in the country i've been told. But I don't know if they have anything to do with riddle. I agree with Malicious and all of the ROTC programs are excellent if you are looking for military aviation. Also their aerospace is top-notch, the dean of aerospace is my neighbor and I hear all the time about some project or competition that the students are competing in and winning.
