salutations and so forth
« on: August 16, 2006, 01:23:01 PM »
Hello everyone! My name's Mike and I'm a student at ASU (originally from the east coast), studying theatre and history, and I'm looking to get into airsoft. My little brother has been getting interested through his friends and, although I'd heard of it before, this is the first time I've been spurred to check it out in earnest. I've done some reading here on the forums and been checking out photos and videos online and they've gotten me really excited to get some gear and try it out for myself.

Because I'm a poor, poor student, I'm planning to just get an el cheapo spring pistol off of Amazon for starters (like this one), just to have a go and see if I actually like playing and want to sink some money into it. Once I get that and the other gear I need, hopefully I can come along to an event and have some fun being cannon fodder for a little while. I'll be a sorry sight with my lack of armament, and the team that gets saddled with me might hate me, but you seem like a cool bunch and I'm really looking forward to meeting y'all and trying out the game. :)

spring guns at large games will leave you with a bad taste in your mouth about the sport. I am also at ASU in the school of mechanical engineering. Even poor students can save up some cash for reasonable excuses to spend it. Kick around here on the boards and take a look at some of the game photos and see what is out there save up some money and get a good starter AEG.

Perhaps we can meet up on campus some time to answer questions, the theater and arts people are usually less stressed and frantic than the engineers so I dont mind a change of scenery once in a while.

Heh, that's true, theatre is a pretty easy breezy degree. That's why I'm now picking up history as a concurrent major, I decided I'd feel like I wasted four years if all I did was get a theatre degree.

Thanks for the advice about spring guns. I read around some more and, while there was much more uninformative springer bashing than there was reasoned advice, I can see how they might suck to play with and, if they're as prone to breaking as everyone says, might turn out to just be a waste of money. I was looking at some pistols on Amazon that cost something ridiculous like $5 with the thought that I could get a taste for the sport without committing virtually any cash to it. On the other hand, though, I've looked into it enough that I'm pretty eager to play and reasonably confident that I'll have fun. If I then consider that shipping is a further $10, it becomes $15 that could go towards a better gun.

So, with that in mind, I started looking around at some entry-level AEGs, and I've discovered that the UTG and CYMA MP5 TM (abbreviations ahoy!) knock-offs are actually quite decent considering the price -- still inferior to a real TM, of course, but they definitely sound like a good choice for a starter gun. Now I just have to decide which to get. The UTG goes for $100 brand new -- which is more than I want to spend -- but I've found a used one for $50, so that is an option. The CYMA, meanwhile, goes for only $30 new. The UTG is said to have sturdier construction (although the CYMA has more metal) and better FPS/range, plus it's convertible from A4 to A5. I think I'd prefer to buy the UTG, but I have qualms about it being used and costing nearly twice as much, so we'll see.

Sorry, this has turned into more of a hardware post than anything. I'd love to meet up on campus some time, that'd be cool. You'll have to let me know if there's any group of ASUers that play (surely among 60,000 students...) regularly or nearby.

You can visit me in Coor Hall. I'll buy you some M'ai Island Grill or something.

There's no nearby about it -- airsoft's always about driving.

Hah, sounds good. You know, I'm surprised there's no airsoft club at ASU, or at least none that I can find through Google and the ASU clubs search. Maybe nobody can be bothered to set one up? Could be cool, though, to help get people together, to introduce new players to the game, and to have some funds to do random crap. Party or buy shared/backup/newbie equipment or something, I dunno.

Regarding the MP5s again (sorry that I'm fixated at the moment..), the UTG at speedy toys supposedly comes with a 500-round hi-cap mag, which I guess would be worth $15 in itself, plus they give out 1000 BBs with every order, so that kind of tilts me back towards the UTG in terms of price. I'll call up and see if they can tell me anything about its condition and how heavily-used it is...

We are the airsoft club at ASU, the other guys are around but we (vince and me) have the handle on what is realy going down in the airsoft community. Sounds like an asu airball meeting is in order!

As for purchasing an airsoft gun, my advice would be to wait and see what the games are like and then think about comitting $200-500 bucks for a realy nice setup. Most of us spend more than $2k on stuff but in actuality with the right purchases you can be just as legit with a fourth of the cost.

I agree with what David said.  I started out just like you, wanted to know if this was something that I want to continue persuing or not. I started with a gas pistol and yeah I was out ranged and out classed but I still had tons of fun. So my recomendation would be spend a little money on something just to try it out but while knowing that if you will be seriously out gunned and if you end up liking it you will need to save up like David said to buy a decent AEG.

Maybe one of the rich ASU frat-boys can lend you a gun or drive out with you and let you shoot one full-auto....do that and you will be hooked my friend.  It's just like doing meth....but you don't lose as many teeth:

...I almost pledged Zeta Psi but decided not to, which means there's no fratboys that play airsoft.

If you mean ASU students, then, yeah, maybe.

The new SRC M4 and AK are allitle better than marui, and they are cheaper...  but get a UTG or CYMA first and see how you like it.

I go to ASU West and as far as I know I am the only airsofter there. Granted I don't get along with most College people(long story but hilarious). I began with a LPEG AK-47 which was my brothers. Then I just got a BE-Tech AUG commando for right now. When I get more money I plan on getting a TM.

And I don't suggest a UTG Warhawk or Commando. I was planning on getting one instead of the AUG but all I saw were negative reviews. Split Stocks, bad wiring, blown motors, low battery life, RUST. But you'll have to look around and make your own choice.

ASU Linguistics major here, don't buy a cheap, low-quality gun or you will regret it whether you like playing airsoft or not.

Save up a bit, you can probably get a decent gun here on the forum cut-rate if you watch the 'for sale' section.
