Man would I love to see one of these on the field at a big milsim match.

The "cannon" itself is a simple build, just a large bore spud gun, however the Howitzer style wheel base would be a trick to find, not to mention pricey.

The firing mechanism on the spud gun is the tricky bit. If I felt confident I could do it without mis-wiring something and killing myself, I'd give it a shot.

I have done a few "spud guns" before fairly simple through and through IMO, I "could" build the cannon itself but the only thing that makes this one special is the howy base. anyone have a set of those laying around?  ;D

I already have a similar one of that lol. I could make a replica and sell it for 500 if anyone is interested.

Awesome. I'll be bringing it out to the first game of June At whateverr field will allow it. Let me know if you would like me to attend!

I could build one with rockets but im not sure how many people would enjoy being hit with one..... or possibly being burnt by falling embers.

It uses at and nerf rockets....

May use a similar idea but in a MILAN, Javelin or TOW system. I know a certain 11H that would like some trigger time with one.

It's only easy it you're willing to blow the entire gas reservoir on every shot.

Well just use a compressor air tank, you only need 80psi with a 2.5 gallon container to launcher the big rockets.

Anyone know where to get fairly large tires like in the video. ?
Title: Re: airsoft howitzer wouldnt that be fun
Post by: Old Dog on May 16, 2012, 07:11:04 PM
Might try some of the wrecking yards, a number of small cars for a number of years use smaller tires and wheels and in many front wheel drives there was a straight rear axel, if one is lucky enough, even one with a wishbone attached, double lucky :):)

One never knows, maybe a wrecking yard would like to sponser a project like that, only two answers, Yes or No, sometimes it never hurts to ask...

Boat trailers ect also have small tires and straight axels, could be narrowed to width desired...

Even wheel barrow wheels from Home Depot or Lowes with straight pipe axel cut to width, there are many options...

Bed frame metal could make trail legs set up to spread apart as standard trail legs...

Sounds like a fun project, makes me want to add that kind of thing to my shoulder held air cannon, mine has a safety pop off valve at I believe 120psi, never ran it above 75psi however...

Only will be going to 80 on this one and besides,
It is quite heavy lol. What did you use to fill your cannon tank with? Do you just have a hand pump or a portable compressor?

A compressor and a high pressure air gun pump, sometimes I have used a portable air tank that holds 100psi, one gets diminishing returns as the tank pressure drops with each refill... I have some paintball valving that I have been looking at that would give me repeatability, just haven't gotten around to building it yet...

A valve regulated Scuba tank would be great, but I sold mine several years ago :(

I think a pre filled air tank would be best to fill the cannon each time. Considering there is a good amount of room on the frame.

As long as you know and have the skills to make it. I am willing to make one for anyone who pms me and
Tells me they will buy it. I will have to finish current one to show you(eta 2 weeks).

Might I suggest, go buy a 1/35 scale howitzer or field gun model kit and scale it from that.

This is a neat thread... I was planning on building a little mortar replica that would shoot nerf pocket vortex footballs this summer, but my car got hit last friday at a gas station so I have more important projects to worry about...

I was looking at valves and the like the other day in Ace hardware and nothing is super expensive. Does anyone know about how long of a burst at what psi could launch one of those pocket vortex 100yds or so? I was just wondering if I used one of those paintball CO2 tanks how many shots I could get off with one tank. An RPG-7 replica would be super awesome in a milsim match.
Title: Re: airsoft howitzer wouldnt that be fun
Post by: Shdsteel on May 23, 2012, 01:19:27 AM
Um not sure exactly your asking. Are you saying how long to leave the valve Open for? And for the pocket rockets, 3/4 inch piping from the tank to the barrel should do it(as in 3/4" ball valve will be used).
Title: Re: airsoft howitzer wouldnt that be fun
Post by: theFlyingTrumpet on May 23, 2012, 01:23:08 AM
Sorta... To simplify it. How many 100yrd shots with those pocket nerfs could you get out of a CO2 paintball tank?

I'll probably get around to it sometime this year....

I'm guessing for those EXTREME Milsim players out there. it would also be very fun to shoot in my opinion.

Whats the point of an airsoft howitzer?
Imagine someone being well-entrenched in a fortified position that have made themselves pretty much unassailable from the ground. So instead of just throwing men and plastic at them indefinitely, you call in an artillery strike, and nerf footballs with a 25' kill radius rain from the sky. It brings a whole new level of interesting to the playing field.

Haven't had time to get any progress pictures yet, but I have developed my own better means of making a similar one. So far that is done is a custom made tank with trigger system and barrel mounted to that. All that is left is to make the trailer and get the axle in(still waiting for it after ordering). The overall length of the actual cannon from (a very unnecessary) flash hider to the breech load cover at the back is a good 7 feet.

On the tank is a safety release valve, main airflow(into trigger system) and nipple to fill.

The trigger system to barrel connection was one of the hardest to overcome since smoke stacks aren't found everywhere and are not cheap.

What did you use for trigger/valve?
Title: Re: airsoft howitzer wouldnt that be fun
Post by: Shdsteel on August 09, 2012, 07:23:38 AM
I had to modify a 1.5" ball valve(its a huge thing!) and make it do the ball valve opened all at once. Did that by replacing the "internals" of the ball valve with other airflow parts. It works and opens smoother.

Length is about 6 1/2 feet minus the "flash hider". The end part would be drilled out to make exhaust ports for added realism. The blast shield and trailer part would be made of steel or aluminum. The barrel elevation adjustments would actually work so you could get an accurate firing measurement. The trailer would come from harbor freight and would be about 4 1/2 - 5 feet wide. The trailer would be able to be towed by any standard ball hitch. Imagine having that behind your car ha! As for the painting and all, a rust proof coat followed by a color of your choice.

I could see that mounted in the back of an old Toyota pickup truck and used as a "Technical" .. It would be more tactical and you could rig a decent air compressor up to fill it faster.

I have some inverters that will run a nice sized compressor off the car battery....I see something very sexy, dangerous, and no fun to be on the receiving end of mounted on my truck in the near future:)
Title: Re: airsoft howitzer wouldnt that be fun

The tank on the cannon is a 5 gallon tank that needs to be filled to 60 psi. A portable air tank that will sit in the trailer part that is 5 gallon at 150 psi will be able to fill it about 12 times. (Not sure on the exact numbers, but I got all the math from the video)
