I have seen some comments from folks stating that protective glasses may not be as safe as googles as they use a diff balistic standard rating
I came Across this test of the Wiley X lens using a Airsoft gun shooting 1000fps with .4gm bob
Seems as if these are pretty darn safe for regular field use.
Although I wouldn't want to be at the receiving end of that 1000fps gun.

That's because Wiley-X (like Oakley) makes ballistic rated glasses for military use. That does not mean all (or even most) safety glasses are safe to use.

I have a pair of Wiley X Jake Rx glasses made of Trimax. these things have now taken numerous direct hits in the past year, and not even a tiny scratch.. amazing.
I wouldn't use the ones in the video for a game though. No seal means the possibility of a shot from behind or ricochet caroming
off the inside right into your eye.

I agree with Mooncruiser, however I think Wiley-X and Oakleys are overkill. I have done past tests on various safety glasses for fun with a 500fps sniper at point blank range and all of them survived easily to my surprise.

Its often not the lenses that fail the test, but the frames. Especially on chinese made glasses. The lenses are often quite tough even on cheap glasses, but a good off-angle shot to the frame often will crack or outright shatter them.
Just because something conforms to the ANSI 87.1-2003 doesnt mean it cannot perform to a greater standard of protection, but if they don't specifically state that they exceed and by how much, you can only know (and rightly assume) that they pass ansi, and that is the extent of it.
The frames are often the hidden danger.. because people often overlook them.. They see their lenses be scratch free, without notcing the hairline fractures forming in the frames.. until that one errant burst causes them to disintegrate off of your face.
In fact, that is what the fate of my Bolle x800's were. The frame eventually failed, despite the lenses looking brand new.
