This exact thing happened to me while at work the other day.  I was stopped at a 4 way stop and as a car passed across in front of me, I saw an M9 being passed from the front area to the rear passenger seat.  I proceeded to follow the vehicle and identified that the car held a family with small kids in the back upwards to 10 years old.  Passing an airsoft gun to your kids in the back seat while out in public is just plain stupid.

People have to realize that these things are for adults and not for children to be playing with them like water guns.  That's why you have to be at least 18 to purchase them.  But people in general have proven over and over again that they lack common sense. This one reason why laws are created. I'd hate to be restricted or loose this privilege due to those masses that are careless.

The sad fact of the matter is that the people this type of legislation affects the most are the people who need it least, those of us who enjoy our hobby legally in private areas, and who obey the law to the letter because we realize how badly we can be attacked if an over-zealous prosecutor gets a bit of publicity thrown their way.  

It ought to be common sense that if you are carrying something that looks dangerous in public, you will be treated like you're carrying something dangerous.  It's a shame that LEO's have taken action against people with toy guns, but I would never fault them for it. An LEO's first duty is to his/her own safety, and should always treat a "toy" gun as a potential threat.

DeAunta Farrow was shot by a police officer who said he thought the boy was carrying a gun and that the youngster refused to obey orders to halt. Investigators later said DeAunta had a toy gun.

Is what I've told people hundreds of times over.

The majority of the legislation in that article is talking about stopping corner stores from selling guns (probably cap and water guns) and prosecuting people who run around in public with airsoft guns... I totally agree with both of those things. People with no common sense ruin it for the rest of us and I'd love to see them punished for it (and for their own safety, it's better than them getting shot some day).

The unfortunate thing is that most of these lawmakers have no idea that there exists a sport involving airsoft guns, so the laws they pass may extend beyond stupid people and harm us.

And ps. I rather enjoy the senator's display of gun safety and trigger control. And he's the one writing the gun safety laws.... we're screwed.

Agreed, there needs to be a set of rules, if not laws that can be applied to fake guns, such as, you can only transport them in the back of the car in cases or something. Unfortunately I am afraid that, with this case, overkill will be the resounding word, and we will all be in a tighter spot.
My real question is, how did he manage to get that NON-orange tip gun, into a government meeting? Wheres the control on that? :D

seriously though, it is just a shame that people dont have enough brain power to realize what they are doing has repricussions far beyond their little lives. if they make laws governing airsoft, it will be way overkill, just like the "evil black rifle" bans that crazy clinton wants to emplace.

What will laws really do besides a complete ban though. The people causing the harm are never going follow anything like not to transport in the car. They are already neglecting common sense, why would they change for an actual law?

Honestly I don't see how this effects us. How many of us go marching in to the local grocery store full battle rattle? And how many of us drive with our M4 variant across our laps?

I agree with what jon said overall. Frankly the only thing I see as bad is the type of gun pictured for the article. I wanna carry my SPAS 12 ;-p

I really enjoy this part,

"In Florida, state Sen. Gary Siplin has a bill that would prohibit individuals from carrying a paintball gun in a vehicle. He said he had been told about youngsters brandishing such guns while driving. He said if they're bold enough to do that they might use the fake weapon to commit a crime."

I really would like to see his logical progression for this. I would say it is a huge step from holding a paintball/airsoft gun in view inside a vehicle to actually committing a crime with said gun.

most of these "laws" dont really do much of anything except get people re-elected.

Most of the regulations they impose are basic safe weapon handling anyway.

As for the orange tip... it shouldn't matter.  Point a real looking weapon even with an orange tip at me outside of an airsoft game and I'm taking you out.  I'm not taking that chance and I dont expect the cops to either.   And yes, that would be a good shoot here in Arizona.

What they should do is just make misuse of an airsoft gun subject to the same penalties as if it was a real gun.  There are already plenty of criminal laws on the books dealing with that.

Why dont we legislate against stupid fuckingpeople instead?  Who cares that some dumbfuck kid got dead holding an airsoft gun.  He should have listened to the LEO.  One less moron polluting the gene pool.....

As well as alot of innocent people that just happened to make a firearm owner mad one day by calling him a bigfoot... Honestly humans are creatures of stupidity (admitedly) and habbit.  We have gotten so close to the mindset that if so and so says something about me I can practically take his ass to court over it and probably win for verbal assault (as stupid as it sounds)  Obviously thats an exageration but if people are willing to go to court because of something stupid like that, then obviously putting guns in the hands of those very people is a bad idea :)

Doc Hollywood has it to the T, Not much I can add to what he's already said!
