the PTW worth it?
« on: November 18, 2008, 11:40:46 PM »
I'm considering one. Wouldn't mind having a replica of an mk18 (like in signature) or a replica of my real USGI clone. And how much would it be for jungle toy to put it together for me if i were to buy a challenge kit(if you do that)? Just getting back into airsoft, been like 2 years. I'm kinda sick of CA's, since I have owned about three.

I am pretty sure you should stick to something more routine for now.

I agree with Vince because it's a lot of money to drop when you're just getting [back] into a sport.

Why not change it up and go with a G36 or AK model from a different brand? It might make things seem more fresh to you.

I was thinking about one for a while, but them started adding it all up.   If I got the challenge kit, I would want RIS and a good one, then I would have to get the PTW mags which aren't cheap, then the PTW battery new cylinders becuase the red one shoots 500FPS, and after I added it all up I was looking at $2,000+ which I could buy 2 or 3 nice AEGs with that so IMO unless you've got the extra money I'd say no,

Well so far, I have it priced at around  1700, a bit less. BUt thats with all clone accessories. First thing i would upgrade from clone to real would be the RIS to KAC RAS. And the ar15 varients are the only weapon I like, g36s, scars and others just look wrong to me  inless its a tevor :)

I can't make my damn mind up

You should buy a car first.

How cool would that be?

I got to shoot one during a game a couple times. Pretty much a flawless shot, consistency is absolutely ridiculous, but definitely not worth its price. I mean, if you want the best of the best, you really can't go wrong with it. But I would say compromising would be a wise decision on this, especially because almost everything you need to purchase for the gun (magazines, battery, etc.) is over $50 each. Plus if for some chance it goes down, you just got f*cked by a $1500 airsoft gun.

This is the very reason you don't own a car.

The main concern I would have is lack of local support. As someone stated earlier, if the thing goes down, you are pretty much SOL unless you want to ship it somewhere. In any case, it is not too difficult to build an AEG that is similarly reliable, but at one third or one fourth the cost.

Well my original plan was to buy a CA CQB (the mk18 version), upgrade it to 400 fps, tightbore, torque up gear set, cylinder kit and whatever other upgrades. Then a G&P acog ta01nsn, use one of my arms 40 BUIS, and probably a clone AAC m42000 can. But then i got hooked on the damn PTW... which will end up around 1000$ more lol.

Dude,
If you have extra cash to stash, don't sweat it, go right ahead get a PTW. But be mindful of the cost of ownership as what others in this thread been telling you. They do drag you down on the initial investment and the ROI is not your typical 4 year return of investment.

I have mine since a year ago, and i have neither opened the gearbox nor replaced any of the electronics. Only thing that i replaced were the motor commutator brushes (no big deal to change, bought 3 sets of spare for 45 bucks and still  have 2 sets left). The motor draws more current (due to shorter duty cycles and active braking) than do regular AEG's hence they tend to wear out more. These babies do need some TLC after every game, i have to open the grip plate and spray compressed air on the motor to remove some debris from the commutator brush, otherwise your battery efficiency will reduce significantly. I have never lubed the gears since i bought it.

If you decide to get it, commit to it and never look back. I have bought several AEG before this. Had i known PTW before i would not have spent money on AEG (i could have owned 2 PTW now). Well i have to cut my losses (from frequent repairs/time spent 0n AEG) and took the PTW route, and never regret it.

Well, eventually my PTW will go down and will deal with it when it happens. For now i am enjoying the near flawless performance,  Fast trigger response, reliability, no-dry fire sound signature, no contact burn-out, long battery life, great ho-up performance, low maintenance, etc...

BTW: Ryan from CT have witnessed by PTW went down on me during the last 30 minutes of OPBH2 (That was after ~7000 rounds for 2 days). And sure enough when i got home, opened the grip plate, sprayed compressed air and it went back to peak performance. Amazing!! I should have used my gas pistol on it :-)

I may try and find a used one or something. I'm still unsure, since I havn't played in 2 years. I still need to get my load out going, and thats going to be expensive, considering i don't like replica, asian made clone crap gear. I also want to finish my current ar build and atleast START my 2nd.    to much wanted stuff, not enough money  :(
