Do you get a noticable performance difference using aftermarket piston heads and enhanced loading nozzles in GBB pistols? Or are these things just snake oil?

Objectives:

Vary as decided per game. Attack and defend, push the flag, capture the flag, force-force, escalation, and many more options will be available.

RULES OF ENGAGEMENT:

FPS Limits:
-AEG: 1.6Joules or ~420fps with .20g bb
-Sniper (semi-only): 3.5Joules or ~ 617 fps with .20g bb *see below for sniper limitations*

Minimum Engagement Distance:
25ft for AEG’s and 75ft* for snipers. Within 25ft, players are expected to call either safety-kill or parley based upon the situation.
*Snipers must carry sidearms or a backup to use within 75ft. Snipers may NOT fire their primary weapon within 75 feet, and "Safety Kill" is NOT extended to 75 feet, however. That is why a sidearm is essential for snipers.

Hits:
All hits to your person or gear, no matter how minor, count as kills. The exception is gun hits to your primary, unslung weapon. If it is hanging or resting against you, or holstered, it is a kill.

Respawns:
For most games: Respawns will operate on the Rule of 3’s. You may respawn after you have been waiting at the designated respawn point for three minutes, or after you have assembled a group of three dead players at a respawn point, whichever comes first.

Further discussion of the rules will occur during the briefing.

General Airsoft Game Discussion / Any interest for a game up North?
« on: July 11, 2010, 12:31:32 PM »
I'm trying to gauge interest for a game in the Prescott area in the next month or so.

We have a few fields, chock full of trees and non-cactus plants... and have the added benefit of under 100 degree weather instead of the "we have to start the game at 5am because it will be 115 at 10am" type of thing.

an example of the terrain can be found at the thread http://airsoftarizona.com/forumbb/viewtopic.php?t=25469.

It would probably have a start time of 9 or 10am (remember, it doesn't get that hot up here)

So, would anyone be interested in coming up?

AEG's / Hopup/magazine/who on Earth knows problem - M16 variant
« on: April 26, 2010, 10:35:29 PM »
Alright. Another interesting problem for everyone on here. I haven't seen anything like it, searched, didn't find anything too similar.

Basically, I ahve a King Arms Sr16. Shooting around 470fps, g&g green bucking, the king arms hopup that it came with, and an airsoftgi6.01 509mm tightbore.

Here's the problem. Sometimes the gun shoots perfectly, the hopup works just like I tell it to, bb's fly straight, fast, and far.
And then randomly, they will either not feed or instead fire at only around 100fps and kinda just fall out of the barrel.

This is a problem that just started happening, and is getting worse it seems.
It seems like I can get it shooting right most of the time after about 20 rounds into most magazines, although some don't ever work... and occasionally a fresh mag will work perfectly all the way through.

I have tried all sorts of different mags. I have removed and reseated the hopup unit. fiddled with it. punched the gun. told it I was sorry. Everything I could think of.

Any ideas on what would cause such a weird behavior?
If you would like more information, just ask. I will do what I can to answer.

I'm going to try it with a different hopup/barrel combo and see if that fixes it, etc as soon as my finals are over.
But if anybody knows of any problems that cause these symptoms, I would be very much pleased to listen to that information.

General Off-Topic Discussion / Concealed Carry
« on: April 11, 2010, 11:02:27 PM »
So... the new law has passed the state's house and senate.

The law basically states that for general concealed carry, a permit will no longer be required. Applies to the previous permit-applicable citizens (over 21, not a felon etc...) for most situations. A permit would still be required to carry in Restaurants that serve alcohol or to carry in other states that honor our CCW.

Any thoughts on the subject?

AEG's / Who needs a special-sized lipo?
« on: February 15, 2010, 04:00:46 PM »
Hey guys, I'm talking with Mike at cheapbatterypacks... and he's looking for input on what form factors people are looking for high quality lipo's in.

So far, I've been able to tell him that nunchucks and stick types are the ones that are hard to find nice quality lipos with 30-40amp or higher outputs, and 2000mAh or better to make sure everybody has a nice battery life. Those are what I've been looking for for a long time at least.

So, is there a demand for lipos in other sizes that you can't find them in?

I know that large battery users have nearly unlimited options, but I've only found the 12C lipos and LiFe packs for stick types and crane batteries... with like 1300mAh, which turns into being less power output than a good nimh 9.6v... completely defeating the purpose of the upgrade.

Who/What/Why
Mile High is pleased to announce the opening of our weekly skirmishes to a limited number outsiders each week.
We're looking to get some variety in our play styles. :D

We play a large assortment of pick-up/mini-scenario games in local alpine forest fields... and are open to suggestions.

Where
Anyways, we meet Saturdays at 10am at http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=115361349070915697741.00047d0605dce04eef1da&t=h&z=18 this place. It's in Prescott, so it would be a bit of a drive for some.

How

AEG's / Suckback, fact or false correlation?
« on: January 22, 2010, 12:10:16 PM »
I don't believe suckback exists.

Matching barrel/cylinder size (or hpa pressure or stuff like that) IS important, but not for the reason of eliminating 'suckback'.

From what I can see, the definition of suckback:
Suckback occurs if the BB is still in the barrel when the piston begins it's backward movement, thereby creating a vacuum and in effect 'pulling' the bb backwards, destroying fps and accuracy.

My reasons that this ISN'T the case:
When the piston is moving backwards: The nozzle is disengaged from the hopup unit, also, the piston doesn't seal as well on the way backwards. Because of this, the 'maximum' suckback you could get is equalizing the barrel behind the bb to near atmospheric pressure.

From the time the piston head moves past whatever vents you have in your cylinder, or just starts moving forward, the bb begins accelerating. Say you have a modest gun, about 300 fps. Even taking into account that it takes time to accelerate, the average velocity is ~45.72 m/s, assuming linear acceleration. Even with a long barrel (550mm), it takes just .01 seconds to leave the barrel at this speed. Assuming your gun has a moderate rof, say, 20rps, that's only 1/5 of the cycle of the gearbox. The piston stays forward for approximately 1/2 - 2/3 of the cycle (Look at the sector gear) of the gearbox. Since your bb has left the barrel before your piston begins moving back, whether or not the nozzle has disengaged, which it has.

There is a chance with high-fps guns, with very long barrels, that your bb will leave the barrel before your nozzle has disconnected. This is not the 'fps drop' usually assosciated with "suckback". This CAN somewhat emulate the results of the standard 'suckback' explanation by creating a small vacuum pressure behind the bb if too small of a cylinder is used... simply because nothing behind the bb is venting before it leaves the barrel. This is mathematically a very small vacuum, if any. Your bb still isn't being 'sucked back by the rearward movement of the piston". This is one of the closest ideas to suckback that I feel makes any sense. Even with this, it won't hurt your accuracy, because it will do the same thing every cycle, and doesn't create turbulent airflow, it will just drop your fps slightly.

The reason for ported cylinders:
Blowby, a very noticable problem, occurs when you use too big of a cylinder. You put too much air behind the bb, and it rushes out around the bb when it leaves the barrel. As it does this, it's extremely turbulent and will seriously hinder your accuracy.

The reason too small of a cylinder hurts your accuracy AND fps:
Barrels, they aren't perfect. BBs, neither are they.
When you lose pressure behind your bb (whether it be to the small amount of vacuum, or a vent to atmospheric), it loses the cushion of air that is trying to keep it centered in the barrel, and begins to roll along the bottom surface. Because of this rolling, you have extra friction through the barrel (reducing fps), and your hopup is being counteracted by this friction along the bottom of the bb(Reduces velocity further by requiring you to turn your hopup on higher). If your bb's and barrel aren't perfect, then you get inconsistent 'rolling' effects, greatly impacting your accuracy/precision.

Logic for those who think suckback exists:
If I use a cylinder for a 200mm barrel length on a 500mm barrel, I will get some major suckback, right?
In fact, I should get the same amount of suckback (200mm's worth) as I originally put into the bb. So the bb should just STOP in the barrel, right? Since the same amount of energy that was put into the bb was taken out of it, it should come to a complete stop at 400mm in the barrel. Why doesn't this occur if suckback exists?

AEG's / Masamune 6.01
« on: January 20, 2010, 10:26:20 PM »
Alright guys.
First impressions:
It's heavy and polished to a mirror finish. It weights about 1.5x as much as the prometheus it's being tested against. The crown is neatly cut and very deep, almost 2x as deep as the prometheus. The hopup cutout is tapered nicely from outside to inside... this should allow my bucking to flex more naturally and will probably increase life of buckings significantly. It came in a rigid plastic tube about 2x the diameter of the barrel. There was no machining oil or shavings or dirt inside the barrel whatsoever, and it looks to be polished internally as well as the prometheus.

I chronoed them with:

Chrono Results:
KA SR16 - Duracon piston head, sp130, spring guide, all that stuff. G&G bucking, h-nub, hop-up dial all the way off.
G&G .25g bb's, non-bio. 5 shots each barrel.

Prommy -  Average of 5 - 416.6, highest 418.0, lowest 415.8.
Masamune - Average of 5 - 423.6, highest 425.6, lowest 420.4.
Slight increase, nothing to write home about though. It seems to be slightly less consistent though.

50ft Accuracy Results:
20 shots each (G&G .25g non-bios, with a broken-in, but not worn out, G&G green bucking, fired after adjusting the hopup for a level flight. King Arms stock hop-up unit, fully upgraded gearbox for the velocity results listed above in 'chrono results'). Indoors, level shooting from a seated bench position with a bipod and supported pistol grip.

The airsoft GI 6.01 is notably better in that over 60% of the shots were within a 1" circle, and the overall spread was smaller by a fair margin. The Prometheus barrel showed a large number of shots in a 2" circle, with a fairly even distribution across it's overall spread.
Airsoft GI 6.01
1.75"x2.5" grouping

Prometheus 6.03

Accuracy tests will come on a day when it isn't snowing!

Troubleshooting / Bucking Choice for high FPS?
« on: October 11, 2009, 09:59:07 AM »
Okay guys...

I just wore through my Systema Hop Up bucking in less than 5000 rounds...  :x

King arms SR-16
510fps with .20's...
I shoot .28's at 415-420 through it, semi-only.

What's my best choice on hop-up buckings?

Introduce Yourself! / Hi... forgot this part
« on: October 08, 2009, 01:32:31 AM »
So, I guess I forgot to post up here when I registered.

I'm Dan "LP" Tyler, Secretary of Mile High Airsoft.
We're a college team up in Prescott, AZ.

My collection:
King Arms SR-16 with a madbull JP rifles front end kit, tbb, 490 fps (.20), full-auto disabled
JG Sig 552 (uh... well... kinda, not working at the moment, see post in troubleshooting.  ](*,) )
WE MEU (maybe a one-off shooting at 400fps or so with .20's and propane.   )

So yeah... if you want to know more, just ask.
If you want to meet me and the team... Let me know and I'll tell you what upcoming events we will be attending. (Or better yet, let me know that you want to come to our game on November 7th.)

Troubleshooting / Sig 552 not feeding reliably
« on: October 08, 2009, 12:52:14 AM »
Okay... my project gun... a JG Sig 552.

Version 3 gearbox

When I fire it, the gun cycles... and it sounds like the gun is firing regularly.
However, it will only fire about every 5th-6th time the piston cycles... with the gearbox out, it looks like the nozzle isn't cycling the same number of cycles as the gearbox (i.e. every 5 times the piston fires, the nozzle moves back and forth 3 times) or something like that. It also has a severely lowered fps (160-250 instead of 410 like it used to be) (i suspect this is from the same problem) when it does fire.

Any idea what's going on?

I've tried:
Opening the gearbox, the tappet plate is not damaged, and the sector gear is not damaged.
Changing the piston/piston head/spring
Crying in the corner

Any suggestions, tips, insider information, new ways to threaten the gun into firing?

For liability reasons, we can only allow adults (18+) and 16+year olds (with a parent present at the field) to attend.

Schedule:
9:00am -  Quick tour of the field for anyone interested.
               Chrono opens
10:15am- Safety Briefing
10:30am -Game Briefing
11:00am -Guns Up... Game time!

The Game!
This will be a force on force game with multiple objectives and a focus on recon and rapid troop deployment. There will be two primary forces: the UPN Force in tan-based patterns and the local Calamitania Military Junta in green-based patterns (colors will be adjusted for the sake of balance and teams will be further separated with the use of armbands). Each team will complete objectives to gain points.

The Field:
The field is located in the an alpine forest with terrain composed of a mix of trees, rocky outcroppings, and some scrub. There will be no CQC situations and, while there is a good supply of cover in most areas, long sight lines will be prevalent.

Premise:

An aging UPN (United Principalities of Nod) spy satellite reaches the end of its lifespan and is set to de-orbit and burn in the atmosphere. However, a malfunction causes it to change trajectory and a portion survives re-entry. This portion includes the nuclear fuel used to power the satellite. Most of the debris lands within the nation of Calamatania, controlled by a hostile military junta, which seizes the opportunity to further their nuclear weapons program. A UPN task force is dispatched in an effort to recover the lost fuel. Further complicating matters, rumor of the event has spread sufficiently far to attract the interest of various private contractors looking to capitalize on situation.

Objectives:

The Calamitanian primary objective will be to collect enough fuel to create a bomb, which they then must hold long enough for their nuclear scientist to complete before extracting from the field.

The UPN force will be trying to prevent this by both collecting fuel and capturing the nuclear scientist.

-Pieces of fuel can only be moved if placed within a designated containment canister (each team will be provided with several).

Each team will have a complement of secondary objectives, given to them separately in the briefing, which can be completed for additional points. They will range from capturing persons of interest, to securing intel or rescuing wounded comrades. These will be worth enough points that each team can still achieve victory if they cannot accomplish their primary objective. There will also be a number of tactical objectives throughout the game that do not reward any points, but instead yield in-game benefits such as intel or temporary respawn points.

RULES OF ENGAGEMENT:

FPS Limits:
-AEG: 1.6Joules or ~420fps with .20g bb
-Sniper (semi-only): 3.5Joules or ~ 617 fps with .20g bb *see below for sniper limitations*

Minimum Engagement Distance:
25ft for AEG’s and 75ft* for snipers. Within 25ft, players are expected to call either safety-kill or parley based upon the situation.

Hits:
All hits to your person or gear, no matter how minor, count as kills.
If your gun is hit, you must switch to a backup. If you do not have a backup, you are out.

Respawns:
Respawns will operate on the Rule of 3’s. You may respawn after you have been waiting at the designated respawn point for three minutes, or after you have assembled a group of three dead players at a respawn point, whichever comes first.

Further discussion of the rules will occur during the briefing.

Camping is available on site. It will probably be rather cold at night, so if you plan to camp, come prepared.
Sorry for the mixup... I had this incorrectly posted before. The area immediately around the AO is a dispersed camp site. :D
