I got one of these from Gearbox.  Ron told me that the gearbox is like the Ares gearbox, and you can change the spring without taking the gearbox apart.  Is this correct?  And how is it done?

Yes, It does have the quick change spring system, there are videos on youtube on how to change it out, it the same as the ares M4 when it comes to changing the spring.

not quite, you have to remove the gearbox from the body of the eliteforces to access the quick spring change system, the ares only require you to remove the buffer tube, pretty much just saves you from taking apart the gearbox and the quality control on the elite forces is horrible.

SteveBogie is right, the quick change spring is not accessed from the buffer tube like the ares. My bad. The quick change spring is a neat idea and seems to work fine, I just feel like it is one more component or section of the gearbox apt to fail when stress is applied

and fail they do lol! I've had them work themselves free so the spring guide locks the gearbox into the body and you have to shove a screwdriver in the hole in the buffertube to free it.
