I was at Diamondback Police supply here in Tucson on Sunday for a CCW class and they had a small stockpile of .223 ammo but it had a sign stating this was all they'd have for 2k7. :(

They had a boatload of AK ammo there too though.

To make it worse, the only cases J&G has in stock is Federal.  Federal is good  stuff and all, but rather expensive just for plinking at the range.  That said, I am staying away from S&B.

Just thought I would give a heads up and say Wal-Mart (sad as it may be) has boxes of Remington in stock last time I was there.  $7/20.  That at least put it a little bit below the cost of Federal.

This is dperessing, I bought a box (200 rounds) of Federal two weeks ago it was around $72.

Yeah, thats like half the price of what I have been seeing it for right now.

Edit:  sigh, most of the places that list cases for decent prices are out of stock  and have been for some time.

Lead has gone way up. So has copper.

The sign in fron of PD (phelps dodge) copper mine has almost doubled its numbers in the past few months. (we do alot of work for them so I see it alot)

Last month I could buy a bag of #7 shot for about $16. Now im lucky to find one for under $30.

Believe it or not, the price of 12ga is really down. I can now buy a case of loaded no.8 for 10 bucks less than it would cost me to load it all. Last season it got down as much as $2.99 a box. Now, about $3.35 seems to be the lowest I can find. But thats still way cheaper than I could load it.

Andy, are you set up for .223? Or are you just doiing pistols. I reload .223, .308, '06 and .30-30 religiously. Once you get set up and going its pretty fast and easy. I think I may have an extra set of .223 dies and a lube pad if you want for cheap. Projectiles are cheap too. Ebay has great huge lots of SS109 APs, Tracers, noslers, and LC bullets. Ive got good load data, and high twist rate loads too. Plus, the brass is practially free. "Range scrounging" I call it. :)

I shoot anywhere between 400 - 1000rnd of pistol a month so its way worth it to reload.  Lately I've been using .223 for hunting and haven't been shooting 3 gun matches as much.  I've seriously considering upgrading my Dillon reloader, and I'll probably get one that I can load .223

What is the cost and equipment needed to get into reloading?  I'm looking at .223 .45 and 9mm.

Yeah, Wal-Mart's stock empties out quick though.  That said, they have been doing better at keeping it in stock.  That's what I have been getting because with my brothers employee discount, that makes it pretty cheap.

What are you guys seeing for 1,000 rds of Brass Case, Boxer Primed, 55 grain FMJ? I have seen, as of last week... from Midway, $450 for remanufactured Black Hills. Amazing...

I will be using my Colt 9mm for training classes...or my Uzi... ;)

I use military classic wolf 55gr fmj. Just picked up my last batch of 500 rounds shipped for $140 out the door from aimsurplus.com

I know alot of people dont like that ammo as its dirty, and in the past used to not feed terribly reliably because of their laquer coating they used to use. With the last few batches of 500-1000 ive gotten ive never experienced one hickup with any of it.

Bump.

I'm curious to know the point at which (ie, round count) it would be more cost effective to buy a reloader.  I understand there are other advantages to reloading (like tweaking your loads), but I'm most interested in the cost-saving, if any.

The cost of .223 is fucking ridiculous! :x

It kinda depends what kind of ammo you normally feed it.  If you are feeding it Federal normally, it will happen pretty quickly.  If you are feeding it Wolf or bulk Reman, not so fast.  Personally I would never put steel cased ammo through my AR, but obviously some don't have a problem with it.

A Dillon 550 will run you about $380.  $85 for a caliber quick change kit assembly, $123 for the .223 die set.  $50 for a powder scale.  Plus another  $200 or so in misc stuff.  You can certainly go cheaper but this is a solid setup that can easily be used to load other calibers.

At that point, going bulk you are looking at:

$200 for 1000 brass casings. (Remington)
$60 for 1000 bullets (Winchester FMJ)
$17 for 1lb of powder
$25 for primers

So figure roughly $300 for 1000 rounds of reloaded ammo plus the time spent loading.  On the other hand you can get some cheap non-corrosive brass casing .223 for $325 + shipping.
