CA M249 Piston Keeps Breaking
« on: September 08, 2006, 12:54:48 PM »
I replaced the piston in my CA M249 with an aluminium one, after the large sector plate striking tooth (the first tooth) broke off on the plastic one.

After a very short time(a few seconds), the same thing happened to the AL one.

I'm using stock gears, 120 spring, and a AL/Teflon cylinder, 9.6V batt.

I realize the upgrades are placing _some_ extra stress on the piston, but I thought a metal piston would be up to the task.

It appears the sector gear is striking the piston tooth hard enough to snap it off.

Any suggestions?  I'm planning to return to the stock spring. Anyone else with this gun having problems?

Panzer fixed this with an 8.4 battery, stock spring, and a Deepfire Piston.

Classic Army recommends nothing above 8.4 volts because of the stress already generated by the gearbox.

Had feeling it was batt related. tx!

How much trigger time do you have on this setup?

hmm...I am in my 3rd month but I only play once a month, but I have emptied at least 6 box mags through it...the only thing though is that I dont burst my shots and actually hold down the trigger!  I just spray and pray

[edit]My FPS is at 430

Yeah, I think you'll be about due soon then, everything I've seen regarding cyclic-related fractures on CA249 pistons says their average duty life is around anywhere from four to eight complete mags.

Hopefully you've got better luck than that, but on a 9.6 and 430 FPS I'm not sure if you will.

My 249 does the same but jerimiah found out that the guide for the piston (the side of the piston) is tooo big. he shaved the guide down and that seems to work.  i went thru 2 pistons myself.

I had a Hurricane piston in my CA249 without a single problem.

Since I've been away, however, it's been in the care of Ganef, and he might have swapped it out.

Nothing has been changed since recieving it, and after 2 national ops and a bunch of games, it is going on 25k+ rnds with no breakage.

The same sort of happened to me upon recieving my CA249, I made the mistake of using a 9.6v initially. However, I seem to remember the reason as to why I did was because the large 8.4v was too hard to get into the stock, in fact I began to split it which prompted me to just slide the 9.6v in.

Anyway I didn't get off more than a hundred or so rounds when the stock CA piston was stripped. I took it to Jeremiah and we found that the last few teeth were totally annihilated. So I asked him to replace the stock CA piston with an ICS aluminum piston I had laying around. After putting the gearbox back together though the stock sector and spur gear started to lose teeth. The sector gear was replaced with one from my CA M15A4 and the spur gear was just one Jeremiah picked out.  The next day when I loaded it up and tried to test fire it, I hear yet another grinding sound, I'm thinking the bevel gear has now suffered catastrophic failure.

Now I'm starting to get a little POed, I'm trying to figure out what I can do now to stop this thing from self destructing. (I did not upgrade the spring, it is still using a stock CA spring)
