I am guessing that its a low security area or something like that.

There's no such thing on a military base.... :)
You have either a standard installation area where anyone with base assess privileges can access, or a Restricted area (flight lines, etc) where a specific access permit (commonly called a Restricted Area Badge) is needed.

A major part of the land on DM is covered under Restricted Access (The AMARC area is one, as well as some of the unused desert areas due to unexploded ordinance dating as far back as WWII...). There is a paintball field on base, as well as a training area for the SFS.

They do have a field training area, however. We used it for three days when we did Air Base Ground Defense training. Pretty large area on the South East side of the base (If I remember correctly).

Accessories & Gear / Fog Repellent
« on: October 08, 2006, 03:02:34 PM »
I've done some searching but cannot find a general consensus on the subject. What type of fog repellent works best for goggles? I have a pair of Wiley X Nerve goggles, and, while they are far better than some of the cheaper brands I've used, they still fog up. So, I'm looking for some good advice - preferably first-hand experience - as to what works and what doesn't. Also, if you recommend a particular brand and know where to purchase it, please include a link if possible. Thanks all.

Here's a vid of my friend and I out shooting. He has an M1 as well...

Thats a really cool gun, was it hard to optain the WWII parts?

Very, very doubtful its completely WWII. The ask price of an all matching, non-rebarreled WWII M1 Garand is well into the thousands. The WWII garand shot a corrosive round through a non-chromed barrel. On top of that, besides many serving during the korean war, many of the rifles the CMP is selling currently were loaned to Greece. Thus, 99% have been rebarreled at some time. While you're far more likely to see a all original korean-era gun, they are pretty rare too. That being said, there is nothing wrong with a rifle thats been through the armory. Its a fine shooter a very neat piece of American history. I plan on picking up one of these through CMP sometime soon as well.

Oh, and yes the garand was the predecessor to the M14. The action is basically the same with a few upgrades. As for other differences, well, look 'em up.

Whats making you think of getting one?  A particularly good deal?  Why not stick with a more well known across the board AR?

Yeah a good deal I would rather have a Bushmaster or RRA but I dont have much money and its a good deal.

Ameetec Arms. They're in Phoenix, have great customer service, and awesome products. Plus, they're having a deal on lowers and uppers right now.

Ever since the new "intro" was put into the website (in the past few days, I think), I have been unable to stay logged in after I close the browser. In addition, the "View new posts" always acts like there has been nothing new posted. Anyone else experiencing this?

Trust me the academy is a cakewalk physically compared to BUD/S.
I'll second that.

I've had a handfull of division officers from the academy and I wasn't very impressed watching them PT (if they ever did).
The naval academy is just a very selective college with a physical requirement for entrance.
In the end, during their naval careers you can't tell the difference between an annapolis grad and someone that went through ROTC.

Roger that. When I was at the AF academy this summer, I expected to get schooled by all the cadets up there physically. Nope. I was kind of dissapointed. But oh well. I want to go STO anyways.
The academy is unique from any other civilian college. I'm the first to admit that not everyone here is here because they were star athletes. That isn't the majority, though. Those coming out of their freshman year especially tend to look a bit on the skinny side, but, trust me, they can do alot more than what they look. Getting beat by upperclassman for 9 months tends to build alot of endurance, not bulk. Freshman year is also devoted to an amazing amount of stupid jobs and tasks that eat away your time. Those are the guys you just encountered in GE. Take a look at the upperclassman and all of a sudden you see a marked increase in bulk. Trust me I did the ROTC thing for a year. Academy cadets don't have near the time to spend on physical development as do most college students (heck, we don't have much time to do much else besides what they tell us to), but most stay in pretty decent shape. I went on Ops this summer to McGuire AFB and had no trouble beating 99% of the enlisted and officers on a three mile run. Up here at the academy, I tend to come in in the middle of the pack. We actually have a higher scoring system than any of the other services, including active duty. To max the PFT for men:

72 pushups in 2 min.
95 situps ''
21 pullups
9ft. 1 in. jump
1:35min. for a 600 yd run at the end
A seperate 1.5 mile run: 7:35min (at 7200 ft. altitude)

Its certainly not BUDS, but BUDS isn't four years either. That being said, I believe both ROTC programs and the AF academy produce fine officers. I wouldn't being going here if I believed otherwise. And no, I don't want to be a pilot. . . ;)

Or if you're smart enough you just won't go to the Navy at all. Hehe. Just kidding, though I grew up with Navy guys and Marines. I'll take the AF, thank you. Welcome to the boards. In all seriousness, if you have any questions about the application process for the academies, I have first hand experience.

Good to know you enjoyed Global Engagement. Minus my multiple bouts with CS, I thought it was a decent time, too. What is a privilege for you ROTC guys is mandatory for us, which is kinda funny to me (and causes alot of moaning from many cadets). And the MILES . . . yeah, they definitely didn't bother to sight the laser in. For Firehead: the transmitters were brand new this year and they are definitely lighter and smaller than the previous models I've used/seen.

Oh yeah, where did you guys set up "tent city"?Over by CATM? Did you get to meet Sgt. Spring?

In the AF, the SAW gunner's are usually the short guys as they ride up in the turret of the hummers. Not much space there, so I guess thats why they put the small guy up there. Of course, if the vehicle is evacuated, they're expected to grab the turret weapon (assuming its a 249 or 240) as they jump out the top and towards safety. Don't know why, but that's what I've been told and have seen.

I'm a Zoomie at the Air Force Academy up here by CO Springs (but my home is Tucson for you new guys). Sure, the schooling's free, but they kick the crap out of you in return. Planning on going into EOD as soon as possible after graduation.

Heck, I'm still an AA member and I'm not even in the state for 9/10's of the year! Whether you play a little or alot, you can never go wrong with attending an AA game.

Thanks all for the great game. I'm in agreeance with Hawk - absolutely worth the drive.

Funny thing on the way back home. My left ear started to itch, so I reached up to rub it. It felt a little weird like I had some serious swelling in my upper ear (I got hit there about 20 seconds before the last game ended), so I rubbed it and a bb fell out! Apparently whoever hit me managed to lodge it in my ear and I only felt it an hour and a half later!
