It seems Special Forces are not happy with M4's.

Well then again, they probably treat their M4s very rough and that's to be expected in their line of work.

I'd like to see the reasoning for keeping the M4, instead of just saying "The SOF's claims were ignored" again and again.

This is old news really, they haven't been happy with them for a while.  The only reason it is coming up again is that the HK416 meets all of the requirements and HK can keep the price about the same as what they pay now.  The military responds with, we are going to order some more Colts now.

There is no question that the M4/M16 was a very good design....  40 years ago.  It is common sense that in that amount of time they would have found ways to improve the platform.  Especially companies like H&K.

classic

I'd like to hear some evidence as well, if the gun "jams at critical moments", why wouldn't they want to alleviate that?

I think Vince already answered that...

Politics.

They have no reason to continue ordering guns from Colt other than politics.  H&K already said they can match (or even beat) the price Colt is charging them and I don't think there is any question the HK416 is a better weapon than the stuff Colt is pushing.  I am sure some politician made a case for keeping it to US companies or something stupid like that.

No, but I can't say I agree with that either.  Especially as far as local law enforcement is concerned.

The M-249 SAW http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M249_Squad_Automatic_Weapon , and the 240 series http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M240 Are both FN's, however made in South Carolina... Heck even the Beretta is an Italian company.  And As far as H&K goes the SOCOM .45 aka H&K MK23 is made by H&K, and it's standard for SF, along with all the MP-5's the navy uses.... then there's the SIG P226 (SIG is a swiss company)...
Now granted most of my examples are made by American plants, I think the only exception would be the MK23 and due to that being SF, it's already been dismissed by the article I read due to SF having "different procurement methods".

The AK consistently invokes thoughts of terrorism, and terrorists, so there is probably no chance that America would ever adopt a weapon with such negative connotations.  Let's face it, that weapon is NOT patriotic.  Ever.
