Title: need help making a DMR.
Post by: wolfenblaze on April 02, 2015, 12:53:00 PM
hello everyone. Wolf here.. recently i just bought a JG M16a3 From Airsplats Clearance sale. I was thinking of turning it into a DMR. JG AR series rifles are known for there Gears not able too handle the spring tension.

i already have pack of element gears that i bought from Gearbox airsoft a while ago  I am working on a budget.  I know ill need a 6.3 or 6.1 barrel a Madbull hopup bucking for starters.  I was wondering if ya all have any advice or suggestions.

I'd go with a 6.03 and a reaps or maple leaf bucking instead of a madbull but that's just me. A double o ring cylinder head for better a air seal and more fps along with a sealed (oring)air nozzle to go with that. Depending on how well things are sealed you might not need to upgrade a spring as the stock one might just be fine with a solid air seal. Im not really sure what else as a good hop is probably the most important.

man this has been a popular topic as of late, someone posted about it on the AA facebook page as well lol.  To make your gun a DMR you really wont need crazy FPS or anything, the most important thing will be consistency.  Two guns may be able to fling bbs the same distance but the one that can do it with tight groupings will be more effective.  To that end, you can do a lot of little mods to help with your consistency.  Stabilize the barrel, seal your bucking to the barrel, shim the hop up arm, glue you air nozzle in place, sealing your cylinder head, and correcting your AOE (angle of engagment) will all go a long way towards making your gun much more consistent, plus with the improved airseal your fps should go up by a bit and stay more consistent between shots.  Also, I would recommend either doing a flat hop or an r hop as they both give more consistent contact and spin to the bbs.  If you just want a normal bucking then I would recommend the maple leaf 70 degree, the ribs really help with its seal.  Other than that, trigger response is your friend since you should only be shooting semi, a lipo a good high torque motor will do you well here.  (High speed gear set will also help improve trigger response.)  Thats about all I can think of off the top of my head but let me know if you have any questions.

hmm i see.. i have done some research into the project and taken some of your advice. along with Dayton who i PMed a while ago  . may go with the electrical tape strategy too keep the barrel stable. also i have a found a video about using floss too seal a bucking. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QInMxQPKyb8   also since im on a budget i figure id start with these

http://www.evike.com/products/42461/

http://www.evike.com/products/48144/

http://www.evike.com/products/36021/

others have also suggested i buy a hop up. of course on a budget im not sure if there reliable ones for decent prices.

but how do the heck do i shim a hopup ?? do i use regular shims for gearboxes ???

so what you are shimming is the hop up arm, so that it applies the hop in the same place consistently.  I cut a piece of plastic and punched a whole in it so that when i put the hop up arm in i can also put the shim in as well and it will be held in place, people use brass, cut aluminum, and also tinfoil doesn't have to be anything fancy.  If your buying parts then I would recommend brillarmory.com and clandestineairsoft.com  they give good descriptions and have a little tighter quality control on what they send out.  Also, brill armory ships super quick which is nice. I personally just use teflon tape to seal my bucking but extra compression is never a bad thing.

It's quite obvious you are pretty new to this whole thing.. Take some time to do some research. Don't base your choices off of what 1 person says (not that their opinion doesn't hold any value). Ultimately it's your decision. There are hundreds of different combinations to achieve whatever your goal is for your gun.
The first two questions asked here should've been "what is your goal" and "what is your budget"

Just got the M16 in today...THE HORROR"""""""" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1Y73sPHKxw. ITS A TWO PIECE HOP UP UNIT """""""""""""""" ok drama done.
Ill now have too add a full metal lower too my list of items too buy.

my goal is too get a rifle with good range and accuracy. my main G&G M4 geared towards CQB arenas'   I am gonna estimate this be a  summer project. [lets face it summer is mostly an hiatus for us AZ airsofters].  i say since im payed weekly at my Meat Dept  job. my Budget would be 30 too 40 dollars a week.  so 60 too 80 bucks a month.  I wonder if that helps Listerine.

BTW I prefer the CINNAMINT flavor ^_^.

You don't have to get a metal receiver to use a 1 piece hop up unit. It just requires a bit of dremel work and a different approach when assembling it.

Get a quality barrel (PDI, Prometheus), get it r-hopped professionally, stabilize the barrel as much as possible (teflon tape, spacers, etc), optimize the air seal between the barrel and the gearbox(spacer/shim the hop up), use heavyweight high quality bb's (biovals/bioshots).

Done.

i think i already found a barrel http://www.clandestineairsoft.com/barrels-c-1_34/zci-509mm-602mm-stainless-steel-barrel-type-ii-p-581.html also ordering this R hop with it.

http://www.clandestineairsoft.com/hs-armory-c-1_41_42/hs-armory-original-rhop-3-pack-p-257.html

I may call on you Nuke too help install it or the senior tech at vanguard. now only if i can find a website that sells hop up shims

Since you are doing a budget DMR.. Don't get a new barrel quite yet. Polish your stock brass one, and hopefully it's a .05-.08 bore. I would advise against the zci .02... Not to mention, their windows makes rhop installs that much more aggravating. if you are really concerned about the barrel, either pdi or prommy are very nice. I think you are giving up on the stock parts a bit too easily. Tuning goes a long way. If you plan on doing your own rhop installs, ditch buying that stuff from airsoft retailers, you can get it for like 50 cents per foot online -.-
Oh, and keep the JG gears. Xyt's are fine. No need for aftermarket gears unless you want a different ratio.

gotcha listerine. Ill start by polishing the barrel. ill see if i have thin scrap metal too make some shims for my hopup. SO  plan so far is

Polish barrel.

Shim the 2.piece hop up and repeat when i get one piece..

.

I already opened the JG v2 gearbox  classic two cut windows in the Rear and a red piston. Not sure if that means its the enhanced model or not. I might glue the air nozzle too the tappet plate and do AOE.. plus faucet washer are only what 1 dollar a 4 pack at aces hardware

just a quick update i have Polished the Air cylinder too decent finish and super glued the air nozzle too the tappet plate. also gave the gears a nice cleaning with simple clean. next is polishing the barrel and cleaning the gear box of that cheap grease.

What did you polish the barrel with? If you arent lapping it the length of the barrel, despite your best efforts you're making it shiny and less accurate because you're creating irregularities (rings) longitudinally.

have not polished the barrel with anything yet. Using a Powder brass polish.. got the cylinder looking decent.. i have a feeling i may need a  fluid polish though for the barrel.
