Thats 3 miles too early.

If you are heading east on I-10 get off at Toltec rd. (exit 203). Take your first right after you turn onto toltec (its houser road but im not sure if there is a sign there). Houser eventually turns into a dirt road. You will want to turn right on the 11th road (Pantano Valley rd. on google maps) and take that until you see a huge pit in the ground.

It is closer to Sunland Gin than it is to Toltec, plus you're backtracking if you get off on Toltec.  The road is probably nicer from the Toltec side, however.

Your right about the toltec road being nicer, a car can make it using the sunlan-gin route but its much more technical.
