Title: My Semi-new shotgun...
Post by: AddoAduro on July 10, 2006, 12:34:42 AM
Well, I bought it new, but I bought it many months ago.  Anyways, it's a Benelli Nova 12g Pump Action,  (See pic here (http://members.cox.net/aaronsharris86/Benelli%20Nova.jpg). Warning, it's huge) and I was wondering about a couple things.

One, cleaning.  What sort of cleaning is required here in AZ?  It's a synthetic stock, so I'm assuming there's no cleaning or anything involved there, but I've asked a few people and get different answers.  Some say oil it frequently, others say don't. I already have a Bore Snake, is that all I need?

The other thing:  I don't hunt, I really just bought this for "target practice" (go ahead, laugh if you want) and for the fun of a shotgun.  (It is loads of fun to shoot, by the way) Are there any good places to shoot it near Mesa, that don't close before 6PM?  Caswell's will only let me shoot it if there's pretty much nobody else there. (very rare)  And everywhere else I've found closes too early.  (Ben Avery is kinda far to drive, either way.  Haven't checked the hours though)

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Neat firestick.

I've never cleaned my shotgun before.

Shooting shotguns is funnest in the desert, but, you could look into the Rio Salado range (Usery Mountain). Caswells is an accident just waiting to happen.

Out of curiousity, why is Caswell's an accident waiting to happen?  Other than the bullet going through the wall into the body shop, that is. ;)

A bunch of fucking idiots shoot guns there. There was an ND behind the line in the same bay I was in, and during my dad's CCW, during the dryfire portion, some idiot had a loaded gun.

As Vince said, check into Rio Salado, they often have matches late into the evening, as well as just general shooting.

Ok, will do.  I think I might have already, not sure.

On the plus side, Caswell's just finished putting in their new backstop, and will now let me use the shotgun any time. :D

But, something kind of odd, I don't know why I didn't really notice this the first time I used it...  It has no rear sight, nor a place for one.  What's up with that?  It has a front sight, but no rear one.  How would I go about getting some sort of red-dot/aimpoint/whatever you want to call it installed?  Any guess on how much that would cost me?

Well, that's a bird gun. Sights are for slugs/buck.

You should get rifle sights installed, or ghostrings.

If you wanted to get an optic of some sort (I recommend an EOTech or a DocterOPTIC), you'd need to have the receiver tapped for a rail.

You should sell that and buy either an FN Tactical Shotgun (AR sights, weaver rail, comes with C-More Sight which you can sell to get something better) or a Remington 870 Police Magnum and then an SST-870 adapter from Cavalry Arms.

But see, I like this gun, and it was practically free. ;)  I believe I held the Remmy 870, and didn't like it, I also held a couple other ones (Mossberg, etc), and the Nova was my favorite.

But, if I end up getting another gun some time in the near future, it's going to be a rifle, either bolt action or semi...  But I still want some kind of sight for the Nova.
