General Off-Topic Discussion / Can someone please explain ping?
« on: December 06, 2005, 06:57:59 PM »
I am not up on computer/internet terms like I should be, so I need some help with what "ping" is.

I play Joint Ops online, and when I see the game server menus, it lists the ping of each server.  What do the numbers mean?  Should I choose a server with the lowest or highest ping?

On a side note, I can blast away at someone at close range, and yet they can still get in close and kill me with a knife.  Assuming they are not cheating, is there a possible lag that is occuring that is getting me killed?  Can a better video card solve that if that is the issue?

Thanks,

-Vell

AEG's / Tech question: How many rounds per mAh?
« on: August 21, 2005, 06:55:55 PM »
I bought a Star 8.4V 3000mAh Ni-mH battery, and my gearbox is a Classic Army V3 with a PDI 170 spring; on a full, proper charge, how many rounds should I get out of the battery.  I'm talking continuous, full auto, machinegun fire.

I used to be up on all the current springs, batteries, etc; but the amps, discharge rates, and other factors are now lost on me.

General Airsoft Discussion / Team ORION is recruiting
« on: August 10, 2005, 09:05:52 PM »
Team ORION is forming up and looking for new members.  If you ever wanted to be a part of a structured team, ORION may be for you.

Here are the basics:

*ACU uniforms are standard issue (tan boots & gloves, OD webgear)

*All ORION members will have G36 based weapons (G36C/K/KE, MG36)

*All weapons will use standard mags with the exception of the MG36

*Each member will have specific roles within the team (Squad Leader,
  Machinegunner, Pointman, etc.)

ORION is looking for dedicated members that want "a little more MilSim" in their airsoft experiences.  You must be over the age of 18 (mid-20+ preferred), have your own transportation, and be willing to accept the responsibilities that come with your position.  Look for ORION members at the AA games and feel free to ask any questions.

Do you have what it takes?  Do you want to do your part?  Do you want to know more?  Email vellsmith@msn.com if interested.

This is for the ones who have ordered from WGC or other HK retailers recently:

I placed and order with WGC and it shipped out on 25 JUL, arrived in the states today, and here is the tracking page info:

Post Code *
25-Jul-2005 20:19   Pick Up Service   United States of America   85335

Date # Location   Delivery Status
25-Jul-2005 Hong Kong   Item posted and is being processed.
25-Jul-2005 Hong Kong   Processed for departure.

The big question...will I get it by Friday?  It has been so long since I ordered from Hong kong, I don't know how quick this will be.

General Airsoft Game Discussion / Favorite Game Areas
« on: July 19, 2005, 07:38:57 PM »
I have been away from airsoft for a while, so I need to play catch-up on some of the newer (if any) gaming areas.

Please list here your favorite areas, and try to limit it to your top 2 or 3.  Take into consideration the playing area, ease of access, distance, etc; whatever made the place tops on your list.  And yes, it should only be places that we can still hold games at.  If I have to hear one more story about the abandoned hotel we got to play in once...I am going to cry.

OK, let 'er rip!

General Airsoft Discussion / If you need assistance...
« on: February 28, 2004, 12:02:59 PM »
There has been a lot of talk about minors, disrespect, customs seizure, etc, so here is a little tip:

Nobody here minds helping a newbie out, at least they shouldn't.  Yes, the "what gun should I get" questions get really old, especially since there is a search feature and a FAQ section for new people.  However, if you need help, have questions, or are not too sure what to do, call on the "Old Timers".  I see a growing trend of mindless posting, crappy answers and general misguidance.  If nothing else, look at the persons profile (there's an idea...) who communicates with you; there is a 'member since' date at the upper right corner of their profile.  That date does mean something; post counts means nothing.

I have been away for a while, checking in now and again, and this board could use some work.  We are going to all pitch in, do our part, and make this the best airsoft board there is!  Either that or...well, there is no other option.

General Off-Topic Discussion / M4 Report From The Front Lines
« on: March 25, 2003, 03:40:26 PM »
For all those fans out there of the M4 carbine, here is some disturbing news:

"Reports have been surfacing regarding the effectiveness of the 62-grain M855 (SS 109) against Taliban and al Qaeda personnel, specifically when fired from the 14.5-inch barreled M4 carbine.  In various regions of the world, the "Sammies" (from the Mog), the bearded ones of the Hindu Kush, and other adversaries have taken solid 5.56X45mm hits and kept moving.  It has even taken, in some cases, multiple hits to persuade them to cease and desist.
The 5.56mm round is very effective in the CQB environment, which the British have professionally defined as 100 meters and in.  The M4 performs well in that short-range role, but infantry shoulder weapons need to be more flexible than that.  However, beyond that intimate range, the terminal ballistic capability of the heavier M855 round to drop a 'tango' and keep him there appears to be questionable, particularly when released from barrels shorter than 16 to 20 inches.
Barrel length has a direct effect on velocity.  The longer barrel permits propellants to burn more completely and gives the 55/62-grain bullet more time to build up crucial velocity.  The M855 is handicapped inthe beginning.  Being heavier, it leaves the barrel at 200 feet per second less than the M193 (55-grain), severely limiting its maximum range for fragmentation.  Add a shorter barrel to the ballistic mix and the M855 in the M4 becomes a non-contender past 45 to 50 meters.  With a 200 fps advantage, the M193 stretches fragmenting capabilities to 95 to 100 meters.  If you are engaging targets beyond the century mark (as in open-desert warfare), acquire a 20-inch barreled M16 rifle, or better still, find an M14.
Recently, due to the M855's shortcomings, a special military unit has dropped their M4s and acquired the DSA SA58 FAL rifle in 7.62X51mm.
I belive the answer to the barrel length problem and restricted fragmentation range with short and more compact carbines is to go to a bullpup design.  The obvious advantages have been lost on the U.S. military, even though Australia, Austria, New Zealand, France, Great Britain, China, Singapore and gun-savvy Israel, to name a few, have adopted the bullpup assault rifle."

There is much more to report, but I thought this initial information would be enlightening.

AEG's / Any G36C's Out There?
« on: January 02, 2003, 06:40:51 PM »
Does anyone have their hands on a G36C yet?  I might have missed the review if one was put up.  If there is not an existing review, shame on those that would hold out on such useful information!

General Airsoft Discussion / AZ Homecoming
« on: November 06, 2002, 06:18:28 PM »
I am coming back to AZ about 2 1/2 weeks from now.  My leave will be from 22 NOV to 19 DEC and I am requesting some good game schedules for that time.  I already know about the 14 DEC AA game, but it would be nice to have at least one more while I am home.

Come on...hook me up with some of that old time scenario gaming!

Accessories & Gear / New Korean Airsoft Gear
« on: October 23, 2002, 02:13:44 PM »
I have been to a few Korean airsoft stores, and I am seeing a few new items pop up.  Some Korean manufacturers are producing replicas of SOCOM silencers, MK23 spec-ops holsters, Blackhawk LBVs, and Ranger kevlar vests.  This is just a small list, but I am sure it will continue to grow.  To comment on the quality, I have seen a few pieces of kit used at our games, and they seem to be on par with the major companies.  The prices are more than reasonable too.  45000W ($35.84) for the MK23 holster (OD or Black), 60000W ($47.79) for the SOCOM silencer, etc.  As these items are sold in local airsoft stores, there is no tax charged, what you see is what you pay.  I will try to find more products as they come up.
