Gunman Kills at Least 21 on Virginia Tech Campus (Update6)

By Demian McLean

April 16 (Bloomberg) -- A gunman killed at least 21 students and faculty today at Virginia Tech University in the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history.

At least 21 more people were hospitalized with gunshot wounds and other injuries. Police said the lone shooter was dead and declined to identify those killed at the Blacksburg school, the state's largest.

``Today the university was struck with a tragedy of monumental proportions,'' school President Charles Steger said at a televised press conference from campus, about 270 miles (434 kilometers) southwest of Washington. ``The university is shocked and indeed horrified.''

It's America's deadliest school shooting since the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, where two students killed 13 people before turning the guns on themselves, and surpassed the 1966 sniper spree by Charles Whitman at the University of Texas in which a total of 16 people died.

Shots were reported this morning about 7:15 a.m. local time at the West Ambler Johnston dormitory, then again two hours later at the engineering school's Norris Hall, Steger said.

The school sent multiple e-mails to students, warning them to stay inside and away from windows, as police responded.

Virginia Tech canceled classes and the campus is closed until 8 a.m. tomorrow, according to the college's Web site. Students, who were locked inside buildings as police tried to determine if another shooter was involved, were told to go home.

President George W. Bush offered condolences from Washington.

``He was horrified and his immediate reaction was one of deep concern,'' White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said. ``Federal assets are available if Virginia were to request them.''

It's at least the second fatal shooting near the school in eight months. An inmate escaped a hospital and killed a police officer and security guard last August.

The attack also follows a week in which bomb threats were made at the school, formally called Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. It has about 26,000 students.

Holy shit, the forecast for today said rain, not mass ownage.

That sucks, bad. I guess the WoW servers crashed or something.

Carry your gun.

Typical media...  Not only did he have evil guns, they think he had long mags.  Oh no, double evil.

Don't get me wrong, I am not making fun of the situation nor trying to minimize what happened.  But the whole idea that this wouldn't have happened if guns or at least high capacity mags were illegal is just retarded.  Some of the reports say the guy even had a bullet proof vest.  Holy crap, how do you think stricter gun laws would help in a situation like this.

It's not like he just grabbed a gun from the closet and opened fire, he prepared for it.  I mean seriously, a bullet proof vest?  That means he was expecting resistance and was ready for a fire fight.  I really don't think gun laws would have helped.

Anyways,

I am praying for the families of Virginia Tech students.  If anybody on here has friends/relatives there, I hope they are ok.

College campuses are horrible if you want saftey. I've had more problems with college students than anyone else. The unreported assaults/rapes are pretty high. And a good deal are freaking stalking creeps.

And the news said he may of had a FLAK vest.

The reports also said he was killing with a 9mm and .22 pistol. In the time it takes him to reload his glock mag I could have cracked his noggin with my thermofluids textbook. That mofo shot himself so he must have pussed out when the cav arrived.

A triumphant day for gun control lobbyists. No doubt this will be used to their advantage. can anyone say AWB II?...

In Eugene the community college use to allow people with ccw to carry on campus.  Maybe they will reinstate this?  Or other schools might look at it?

The ebst way to counter the anti-gun lobby is to get your CCW, buy guns, and CARRY them... and encourage other law abiding citizens to do the same thing.

Fuck a bunch of legs anyway...

I think you guys are missing the point.  Pray for the mothers who no longer have children.  Pray for the friend that will cry alone tonight.  But most of all, pray that the cowardly bastard responsible is burning in hell right now, and forever.
