glocks
« on: February 21, 2009, 11:20:23 PM »
Hey guys.  my dad and I are talking about getting a new handgun.  right now were leaning towards a glock, most likely a 19 or a 21. price is a big issue right now, which is why we are trying to stay in the under 700 stuff. if anyone has experience with glocks or suggestions I'll gladly take them.  thanks.

ive had a glock .40, think it was a 17 but i didnt care for it. no safety, no decocker, just gotta empty the chamber and dry fire it. i would shoot at targets at about 80 feet and i couldnt hit anything, but my ruger .357 would be dead on. if you get a glock id suggest a 10mm

^ The 17 is a 9mm, hte .40 are the 23,22,27 and 35.

Personally Im not a huge glock fan, but they are durable and will last forever, good solid reliable guns.

I don't need a decocker, I don't touch the trigger unless I am going to shoot my glock so I don't need a safety, my glock 19 is my friend and I know it will go bang every time I need it to.

Ammo is cheap, mags are plentiful, aftermarket stuff is everywhere. Many of the people I know and respect on this board are glock19 owners.

To quote someone:

"All handguns should be glocks, all glocks should be 9mm and all 9mm glocks should be model 19."

Right now I am pushing to get a 17, but he wants a 19.  any particular difference between the two besides the 19 being slightly smaller?

I swear by Glocks, and so does pretty much every Glock owner I know.  Simple, effective, and reliable.  IMHO, the most value for the money you're going to get.  The difference between the 17 and 19 comes down to size.  I prefer the feel of the compacts in my hand, but it's personal preference.

I am going to the Outdoor Expo at Benavery next month, so we're going to try out a bunch of them there.  I have shot the glock 17 before, and it is an excellant feeling weapon.  still need to try the 19.

I like my M&P and all, but I'm still going to keep carrying my Glock 22.  You can't argue with the Glock reputation.  For those that say they are "unsafe", think about it for a minute.  You don't point it at something you don't intend to destroy.  You don't touch the trigger unless you intend to destroy something.  You just can't really go wrong with a Glock.

Handguns are like women, everyone looks for something different and either you love them or hate them.
My recommendation before buying is to visits one or more of the various shooting ranges around the valley. Shoot a couple of different makes, models, and calibers.

Lots of folks say the only good handgun is a 45 and 1911 is their god.
10 mm won the FBI ballistics test (beating out the 45 on consistent penetration) and is the recommended caliber for agents.
40 cal is considered a lighter 10mm.
9mm meets the needs of most folks and gives them lots of rounds in the mag to boot.

In regards to a safety, really depends on what it is for and who is going to use it. Handling a gun without a safety (or with the safety off) carries with it an inherent risk. The chance of an accidental discharge goes up. Lowering that chance comes down to training and vigilance. For a target gun, a safety is a good idea. For someone who is new to shooting, or the young, I would recommend a handgun with a safety that can be turned off only when in the firing position and ready to fire. Vigilance is about being safe and doing right every time, no matter how often you shoot or how experienced you are. "I'm sorry" doesn't put the bullet back in the gun.

I hear the glocks are good, but I personally hate them.  The grip angle is awful, but thats coming from a person that prefers the 1911 angle.

Look at the Springfield .45XD Compact.  It has a short 10rd mag that makes it easier to conceal and a 13rd mag with a spacer for a full grip.  I just sold mine, but I LOVED it.  It was one of the best backing guns I have ever had.  Same thing, no manual safeties that you had to fuck with if you needed to use it, just hit the bang button and your good to go.  It feed everything well from military ball to my target SWC target loads.

^ summed it up very well, I'm just not a huge glock fan, partly because Im not a huge fan of the way it looks and I like the feel of other handguns more so than the glock. Now that being said I dont cary a gun on me, and Im not really in situations where I couldn't handle a problem, most of the time im just at the range so if a problem occurs i can deal with it. Now if you were in a situation like police or millitary or if I carried a gun for saftey then hands down i would go with the glock.

Nothing wrong with a Glock other than its lack of a saftey device. Most however, consider the safe action trigger a saftey device in which its purpose is quesionable. I think a decocker is stupid, But I hate double action handguns anyways. That is why I dont like most SIG's. I am a proud 1911 owner, and love the 1911. However, the 1911 is not for everyone. It can be a difficult weapon to master for some, and I myself have had to work at it. Maybe I am A.D.D in the TAP RACK BANG issue, (its on going joke in the Target shooting community). Also a 1911 tends to cost allot more, and sometimes may require fine tuning, upgrades, accessories to make the individual user satisfied, and in doing so has become a money pit. I like the Glock for what it is, and what it has to offer. I would disagree with Dave's (Ganef) statement respectfully love ya Dave because of various reasons mostly just on a matter of opinion, and taste.
To put it shortly The Glocks Pro's are.....
Affordable
Very Durable
Easy to find mags, and they dont cost and arm and a leg
Parts and upgrades can easly be found.
Mags High capacity
Accurate
Easy to master despite it feels like a Block=Glock ha I made a funny!!!
Its basicly the AK of the pistol world yet accurate.

I would have to say everyone should own a Glock because of current times. I personaly own a Glock 17C, and a 21. I loved the feel of the new HK's but because of the price tag, cost of mags, Avalibility of mags, and if something breaks you will have a hard time getting parts or have a hard time dealing with HK. Hey I am a 1911 owner, and its my gun of choice, but would I toss that under a truck? Hell no, but a Glock sure run it over it should still work so what if it scraches!!! The fight over 1911 VS Glock will go on forever much like 9mm VS 45ACP. I choose 45ACP, but thats another story!!!
GO GLOCK FOO you can loose then after you master the pistol go 1911!!!

I didn't even bother reading the above posts.

I'll just say that a Glock 19 is a perfect blend of shootability and compactness.

If mag capacity is a reason for wanting the 17, you can use 17 mags in a 19 with no problem - or any other 9mm glock mag larger than a 19 for that matter.

I don't care for the stock Glock sights, but that is an easy fix with the tritium sights of your choice.
