AK Mags: CA, TM, or STAR?
« on: December 31, 2004, 05:08:09 PM »
Okay, this sounds n00bish. I am planning on making a somewhat large order(around 8 or so) of 70 round AK magazines. Should I go with Classic Army Stds, Marui Stds, or some STAR Stds(the ones that looks like 74 mags). I had a bad experience with the STAR midcaps(didnt fit properly) and i'm afraid that if i order some stars, they all might be like that. I have also heard a few things about classic army mags(mainly mp5s). That discourages me badly. TMs i know are great...but i'm not sure if i want some "normal" looking AK mags. In the future i plan to get an AK74 kit, and a fullsize AK(I currently have a spetznas). Also, the "normal" Ak mags dont look *that* great with the spetz. Can someone give me opinions, or state some previous knowledge.

And for those of you who are tempted to say "search". I am about to do this, but i want some current stuff.

Star standards are really good from what I've heard.  Classic army mags are well, classic army mags and their springs are weak (again hearsay from forums) and will eventually not feed well.  I say go with the Star or Marui standards.

Well one thing to take into account...how many times have you heard of people having problems with each? I have heard my fair share of complaints pertaining to the CA and STAR mags (although I use both w/ no problems) but NEVER anything bad about TM standards.  If reliability is a MUST get the TMs. Rick

I have never heard any complains of STAR mags, except for mine. I have heard nothing bad about CA mags, except for hicaps, which i dont want anyway. I'm thinking i'll give star another chance. But if they fubar this mag, i'll get maruis.

I have heard nothing but good about CA standards, but I have yet to try them. I have 12 TM standards for my m4 and theyre all good...Id suggest ordering some G&P midcaps actually Ian..get them from AEX. They actually feed REALLY well. Also, ask Dusty, he has a bunch at the JT store for testing.

I had some CA Mp5 mags, and they didn't fit right, they scratched the magwell and left huge lines, built to sh*t, and were noisy. And everyone I've seen that has had CA hicaps for the m4 variants, sometimes, it takes about 3 people to yank them out of the magwell, but for some reason, they slip in like a brease. The TM mags.. I've never had a problem with. But, my recent AK one (You were there when I got it yesterday) skips a shot every 20 or so shots. I still say, go for TM. It's super easy to lube those up.

Its supposed to stratch the inside of the magwell...Metal rubbing against metal will scratch. THats what gives your gun and mags that battletorn look. I have a CA highcap in my CA that was very wobbly...TM standards and G&P midcaps are the way to go Ian, no doubt.

i might get a combination. I want 8 mags total. I'm thinking about 6 TM stds, and 2 G&P midcaps.

No, scratch as in not just paint coming off, but strips of metal, pretty deep strips.
