War of the Worlds
« on: July 01, 2005, 01:35:00 AM »
Just came home from seeing this film, beautifully done in a kind of dawn of the dead, night of the living dead, independance day, end of the world kinda thing. A valuable lesson learned, having a sh*t hits the fan alien invasion stockpile of weapons are not for killing aliens but for defense against other people. Good movie to see in theaters though I defietly need to see the original film again, streetlamps turning people into shadows was way cooler than deathrays making dust balls of folks. What did you all think?

When I first saw the trailer for it, I was really excited.
But without seeing it, I have the feeling it will contain over the top(unbelievable) special effects, and over-emotional acting.
I will go see it, but I bet I wont like it much

If you don't think you are going to like it, why waste the money to see it?

I really enjoyed it.  Interesting story, characters, and cool special effects.  It may just be me, but some parts had a very Half Life 2 feel to them.

I was disappointed with the second half and ending.

Sure, we all know what's going to happen, but the way it was portrayed in the movie was lackluster and boring.  A 20-second narrative of WHY the aliens die?  I'd rather SEE it happening.

And the whole Tim Robbins in the basement portion could have been omitted altogether.  I'm sure there are those survivalist, no-one's-taking-my-guns types out there that enjoyed it, but who wants to see some crazy a$$hole crawling around a wet floor for no less than 30 minutes?

Not I.

Worth the matinee fee, but disappointing.  After all, it's pretty neat to see soldiers blowing the sh!t out of tripods with a Javelin!

I don't think i'm going to see this one....
For one reason, I had one of the worst nightmares last night about Tom Cruise trying to kill me...

Dont be a puss! I was going to see this tonight, but it was sold out...So i sat with a few buds and 4 other people at 10pm and saw Land of the Dead..... I thought dawn of the dead(remake 04) was funny...this...just effing sick and disgusting...it was some cheap thrills though. Definately not worth watching again or the 6.50 I paid.

It's kinda funny how I never get carded...hmmm

Ummm...it's because you’re GAY.

We saw it last night...thought it was great.  I liked the special effects, tolerated Tim in the wet basement and loved the fact that God in His "ultimate wisdom" wiped them out.

The ending is just like the original....which you have to admit was brilliant for back in the 1950's.

Hell, what are some of you guys bitchin about?  Tim got his just deserts!  If you were with me and my kid in a similar situation and you endangered us, I'd give you the same teatment.  (Close your eyes little one, daddy will be back in a minute, lol).

The movie fit right along the guidelines of the older one but still managed to feel original.  We really injoyed the flick, and I can't stand Cruise!

*WARNING: SPOILERS*

Overall, I thought the movie was good. Having read the book... I can definitely say half of the movie was completely untrue to the book; either stuff was missing or just completely made up. It was still a good movie though. I think they may have confused actually made the movie worse by trying to stay true to some parts of the book.

As somebody mentioned, the part in the basement could have been compeletely omitted, but they were trying to kind of recreate the little farmhouse from the book.

I found the movie to be entertaining and I would see it again. It was pretty cool.

Let me tell you right now, if it is important to you that your movies match the books the movies were made from, standby to be frequently disappointed.

Interesting that it would be compared to the book, in my mind, I've compared it more to the 1953 film.

As far as I know, the book is quite different, having the invaders specifically from Mars and taking place in England.

The book is a lot like the old film. They put emphasis on the same scenes, characters, and details. This new film takes the story in a completely different direction, especially as far as characters are concerned. I think the original main character was a news reporter who travelled the country-side observing and reporting on the events that took place, the new movie's character is a family man trying to make it to Boston (for reasons which I will not reveal).

I still think it made a good movie. I wasn't there to see an exact recreation of the book (thank goodness it wasn't, because I think it was probably one of the most boring books I have ever read), I was there to see an entertaining movie.

What the heck are you talking about? It showed one alien die, and explained why. It doesn't need to show all million of them die, slowly.. that'd be pointless.

You seriously just want to see all those aliens just.. fall over dead?

No.  Re-read my post, dude.

I did not like how they show ONE die, then the movie is just over.  Like the end of the invasion was just an afterthought.  I would have liked to see the ending come about eventually.  Rather, I thought "OK Morgan Freeman?"
